SRK Front Page, and the Community's Lack of Knowledge

So out of the whole cast, you think Phoenix is fine because there is one character that counters her. That’s like saying ST Akuma would be fine if one found out that a certain character beats him. I don’t play Marvel, but for every fighting game I have played, if the only way around a character is to pick a certain single character in the game, this means the balance is shit. Honestly, I do not mean to flame you, but this was a really flawed argument.

Edit: well, as others have pointed out, this is off-topic. Please ignore this POS post.

These past few pages have been flawed to this thread. How about that.

Pretty sure he was just using Spidey as an example. But I’m also on the list of people who don’t think Phoenix is as bad as people make her out to be. It feels like the Sentinel train all over again but this is all I’m going to post on this due to the amount of derailing this is doing to the main topic.

the core difference is if you counterpick like this, you have -*2 other characters- *to play the match with, that can be whatever breadwinning pair you want them to be.

Y’know, nobody uses his command grab and standing A to tick, but that’s another argument altogether. I do completely agree that games take time to evolve and knee-jerk nerfs are awful.

Why is this derailment continuing?

This thread sucks.

I’m amazed that this thread was able to stay on topic for 300 posts. At least we’ll get some quality coverage on the front page out of it.

Until some point, this was a good thread. Let us remember it like that

The thread doesn’t suck the people who posted in the last few pages suck myself included for falling for it. :frowning:

Do I know you?

That’s a thing I do.

Do you only post to be an ass?

You don’t understand. I’m being serious if I know him somewhere else on the internet.

Also: when it calls for it.

HAV you make some very good points.

One thing that I think is really wasted is the potential in the WakeupSRK podcasts. While I enjoy them and Keits and Ski are entertaining, factual hosts, I feel that the whole strategy element is lost. Look at some of the players they’ve interviewed in their podcasts; Combofiend, Clockwork, Ryan Hart, Mike Ross, Arturo Sanchez, Henry Cen, Alioune, Alex Valle, Viscant and others. Now alot of these players dont really make their voices heard outside of these podcasts and maybe the occasional bit of commentary from them on a stream, short video interviews or a random post on SRK. I think there should be more of an effort to absolutely grill these players with questions asking them about their thoughts on strategies, matchups, player style, footsies, spacing, mindgames and all the stuff that you actually need to learn to become a top player.

A good example of podcasts that actually talked about real strategy were the denjin video podcasts that Gootecks did. Take for example the Street Fighter Podcast Episode #4 with Combofiend (cant find any links to this on the net unfortunately). Gootecks interviewed Combofiend and basically peter rosas laid down his whole philosophies on footsies and character selection and how he applied it in CVS2.This podcast actually really helped me create and build upon my own style by taking some of the concepts peter talked about in this podcast.I must’ve listened to it about 10 times at least.Gootecks did a whole great series talking about in depth strategies in 3rd strike and interviewed character specialists like Renic with Alex, Ken I with Makoto, Victoly with Dudley and 5star with Ken. For fighting game nerds these are hours of rich information being broadcast into your ears.

Another podcast I recommend is Alphaism and some of Skis podcasts about fighting games from 2009. He made an excellent MVC2 series and one of the episodes was about an in depth guide to the top teams in the game telling you exactly how they function.

I think we need a modern podcast like that.I mean, I could listen to say Viscant and Clockwork on one podcast talk for hours about MVC3 and strategies in the game. There is some technical discussion in WakeupSRK but it is often only little nuggets of information before the topic moves on.WUSRK is more about interviewing players about their history and their thoughts on tournament results than the actual nitty gritty of playing these games at a high level.

I’d really like to hear that. If you listened to this 10 times and probably have the mp3 file please upload it somewhere. :<

Well, HAV and everyone else in this thread, as an individual who has only in the last 2 months approached fighting games in a competitive nature and discovered my local scene, what would YOU recommend I spend my time watching/reading/studying?

Not that I’m saying you’re wrong, this is a serious inquiry.

You said competitively… thus YOU PLAY TO WIN

let me repeat

PLAY TO WIN

your not playing to flash, your not playing to cater to the crowd of stream. Next find a character that fits you. YOU, not your buddies, not for the stream monsters. Once you find that character LEARN THAT CHARACTER in and out. Learn every button and what it does and how it reacts. Find out what counters whats. Read up on frame data to understand in depth what works overall. Dont go trying to learn 4-5 different characters at one time. Have a go to character that you know in and out and NOT AFRAID OF ANY MATCHUP.

When studying youtube matches or matches you come across treat it like a quarterback would…KNOW WHY zoning, countering, and certain moves are being used. Studying including going into the character of your choice forum and reading and asking questions. Also dont be afraid to ASK questions. I still ask to this day cause you learn something new all the time. It also includes going into characters that do counter you and learn why so when the time comes you know your weaknesses and it will only come down to the player…

WATCH THE MATCHES. replay or rewind if you have to. Know why said player did that move. Watch how a basic button is used for spacing, footsies or keep away. Dont go into it looking for ‘juicy combos’ that you have yet to retain muscle memory for… look at the basics and in time learn tricks.

Lastly…play play play. Dont be afraid to lose. Dont feel offended if someone says ‘stop jumping’ ‘stop walking into that’… its part of learning. Get together with your scene and play with people watching and ASK then to critique and take everything as an opinion and mold it to what works for you. Slow down with the online play cause you deal with factors that will ultimately hurt you overall (lag, rage quitters, different mindframe).

Just to let people know, I still care enough to actually do something and I’m in the middle of doing it.

There it is guys.

Let me summarize this thread. “People don’t really know but they act like they do and it’s the front page that’s to blame.” The front page has always been a source for basic news and little else. If character bios every day is that significant for increasing knowledge then maybe some players aren’t really seeking hard enough.

Not only that there is elaborate strategy characters for every game and character in the strategy forums.
