SRK Front Page, and the Community's Lack of Knowledge

I’m not mad because I used an example. It’s like you didn’t even read what I wrote. In that thread, or this one.

I’d say you’re so used to jumping on people who are new to the site anything that can be interpreted in a “scubby” way is immediately assumed to be such. You also like to stroke your schadenfreude complex - I can relate; but in this instance you’re mistaken. I didn’t call the person I sent a message to a spammer. I used the term spammer to describe someone I beat in an earlier match - because what else are you going to call someone that only does 2 things the entire match while they lose? They were spamming out Tron’s drill and Sentinel’s beams. That’s all they did. What else should I call it? Now using a colloquial term is enough to be disliked?

The very idea that positing a detailed defense of your position is looked down upon as, “you wrote paragraphs” is beyond stupid. Yeah, I can organize my thoughts into words and type them out. What’s the problem?

I don’t like taunting. What can I say? It’s a legitimate way to feel. I don’t know if you’re one of these people here who I’m “not supposed to disagree with” or whatever, but since I’ve been here I’ve never seen you do one constructive thing. Maybe you have in the past? Or you’re good at a game so you get a pass on being a jerk? I don’t know. I have no idea who any of you are so I treat you all the same (like when I told Koop a post he made was hard to read because it was filled with grammar and spelling errors - and he threatened to ban me). If the point of this thread is to encourage more positive activity in the community, I’d point you to the same post you just criticized and ask you “what have you done lately?” I thoroughly expect you to just quote this and reply with a snarky response, or just a hearty lol, but I’d encourage you to actually respond so I have some basis for why I should take anything you have to say more seriously than anyone else.

Just for contextual sake for the people reading this, the exchange in question was me sending someone who was taunting and corpse-raping after their wins the message: sore winner. It was posted in the “What people message you after you win” thread in regards to someone saying that taunting made them “Salty”. If you think that makes me part of the problem, I’d be curious to know why.

Moving on:
The way people pass on information here is unfortunate. It seems as if it always has to be accompanied by humbled whispers of worship and tribute (shout-outs to glassjaw). Look at the terminology the community uses and it’s no wonder why. Domination. Godlike. Srcubs. The culture around these games doesn’t have to be so… Alpha-Bro. Which is probably the same reason taunting bothers me. It’s just more dick swinging in what I perceive as an over-testosteroned group. If you’re looking for deference and supplication for giving other people some tips, then I’d tell you to change your attitude and reevaluate your sense of importance.

But what the fuck do I know? I’m new here and write paragraphs.

(I apologize for making this post at all since it’s a commentary on something outside the scope of this thread, but I think it’s applicable to some of the attitudes and perception discussed herein.)

To offer something of substance to the thread:
I’m good with language. It’s really the only way I can contribute here, currently. If anyone needs something they write copy checked for spelling/grammar/clarity I’d be more than happy to do it.

Eat a dick.

But no really, there’s nothing wrong with writing paragraphs, but when you’re doing it to defend yourself because you posted about sending hate mail after losing in a thread called “what people message you after you win” it doesn’t help, at all. You know what you call the guy who only used two moves on XBL? Nothing, you just move on. It’s netplay, no one cares. Even if he thought he was hot shit and started sending messages after like some people do, don’t even bother responding. He’s clearly awful and not worth the effort, once the game is over don’t even think about him again. I don’t care if you don’t like taunting, as long as you don’t like it for the wrong reason. I like taunting because of what it did to you, it got in your head enough to make you send the guy hate mail, then post about it on SRK. One button managed to get you to do all that. That shit’s godlike.

What do I do? I post a lot in character threads in the MvC3 section, and I was constantly updating the Kitana thread in the MK9 section before people realized TYM was a better site to go to. I made this account in 09 and back then people were like fucking nazis to anyone who joined in 09 (old SRK showed join dates and had a rep system) and anything you said automatically got disregarded. So I barely posted back then, if at all. I was godlike at other games and contributed a lot to them, but they aren’t relevant to SRK so I won’t even bother mentioning them.

You can’t really change something that started 20 years ago. Also remember you’re playing a competitive fighting game so obviously the vocab is going to be more “alpha-bro.” I don’t see how any of those words you listed are bad, every game or even sport has their own version of it. If I perfect the guy twice I’m pretty sure it’s okay to say I dominated him (or rape since that’s always fun). I sports they say would say it’s a blowout. I’m sure you’ve heard an FPS player say something was godly, it’s all the same thing. What words do you think we should be using?

I like the Player Guide idea. It’s strange, because EVO’s “Player’s to watch” section was one of the first things I thought of when I opened this thread (I kinda knew that part of it was gonna be about people not knowing who Fuudo is). It was from those pages that I finally got to see what players like Alex Valle, Daigo and MadDogJin looked like. Back then there weren’t any streams so if you didn’t live in the US all you had to go on was forum and newsgroup posts, and if you’re lucky a dodgy WMV file off someone’s FTP site or IRC (ironically, back then I knew more about Valle as a Tekken player because I spent more time on Zaibatsu than SRK). Anyway, even though it was just a short blurb about the player, I found it very useful, especially for discovering players I hadn’t heard about before.

Cause you were being a asshole… simple. Members agreed and sent pm’s actually thanking me for ‘threatening’ you. People are chiming in on a topic and you come in on professor status. Apparently according to some that’s all you do. End of discussion.

His posts are either hit or “what the fuck are you shooting at?”. It’s like 50% are really quality posts, and the other 50% is legit ignorance. He does post SOME good shit… so I will credit him for that. Unlike Abraxis or as some are claiming it’s louiscipher… meh.

With the new games and patches coming out in the next few months, now would be an excellent time to be setting the groundwork for a community project that could really benefit the FGC in the future. Now that fighting games are being revised and new ones are coming constantly, it is important to capitilize on the “hype” and make it work. Thank goodness for this topic, this has even motivated me to blow the dust off my arcade sticks and play for a little after work today. There is still some sanity to SRK.

Hav - have you considered that some of us new guys are actually eagerly searching the interwebs and trying to get better? I’m trying to learn Akuma and Yang, and i’m trying to dig up every video i can on things like option selects (which i had no clue about until a few months ago) and also trying to find videos and other media that talk about match flow, spacing, execution and the like. I’ve been playing fighting games casually for years, but it’s only since last November that I’ve really begun studying this almost like a school subject. I had no idea how technical fighters really were. It’s been hard because I’m doing this mostly by myself but i want to get better. It’s going to be very difficult in my country as the fight scene here is not a vibrant one, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to keep grinding.

I have no interest in the fluff, I just want to play the game well.

I appreciate your and other efforts to keep the knowledge flowing.

I think then, that his criticism isn’t towards you. I have a lot of respect for new players that WANT to learn.
I think HAV and I both dislike a breed that is unlike your own, of newcomers.

I honestly have no issue with newcomers in any way. People get what they want out of the games. I’m perfectly OK with that. My whole point was that SRK focused almost completely on stories that catered to less serious players. Just not a lot of balance.

@Gelohk- If you’re looking for Yang stuff… go to the Yang forum. There’s a thread called “Yang Lab” in which there is a lot of the technical stuff that you’re looking for.

Well, they can go fuck themselves. The reason such players feel this way is because they like to delude themselves into believing that they’re hot shit, when in fact, they almost certainly are not. They’re cold diarrhea. If your advice is strategically sound and intelligently presented, I guarantee it will resonate with alot of players like myself who are just eager to learn and accept the fact that we really know so little about fighting game strategy, and don’t simply pretend to be good players on the internet to flaunt our E-penises (as with the aforementioned stream monsters).

The newbie dojo always needs more people helping with basic questions. It’s hardly glamorous I know, but getting people out of the newbie phase helps us all.

@ J Scogz. Respect.

@HAV - Respect as well, I will check it out. Also I’ve been searching for -6 videos online but the only one I’ve seen of him is him being raped by Amiyu’s Gen. But then I should search the Akuma forums.

Thanks also to those who mentioned Maj’s guide to footsies. i guess I know what I’ll be reading this weekend.

LOL, I’ve posted more than a few of -6’s videos myself, actually. Although it is mostly his Cammy, not his Akuma… but there’s some Akuma in there.

www.youtube.com/xupyourgamex

Search for -6. He’s in there.

Two or 3 matches of his Akuma. The rest is Cammy.

I’m a little late to the party here. I also have to agree with HAV in this statement. The majority of what I see now is relating to combo videos that look cool yet serves no real purpose within an actual match and other things of the same ilk.

I would like to see more content on strategies, match up breakdowns and useful tactics on the site; primarily on the front page. Even bring some of the older stuff back such as using certain specials in situations that proves itself to be effective and community spotlight for an example.

I guess there’s a big difference between a site that’s mostly for reference and information, and a site that’s mostly for fandom and community.

We see that Dustloop is fighting a somewhat losing battle trying to keep itself as the former, as they are fairly aggressive about locking/deleting random conversation that doesnt have informative content.

Personally I’m fine with forums being mostly about conversation and fandom. Reference and information works better in other formats, like Wikis.

It could work in wikis if the information was static. That’s why frame data and commands for moves are in the wiki and a few “go to” combos. Everything else about the game like match ups is more dynamic and experimental, which is why the forum medium is better.

There’s section here and I thought there were sections on there for the “non-gameplay” related stuff like fan art and in game lore. The problem is how that stuff is seeping into all other areas when there are designated topics/forums and PM system for that kind of stuff.

It’s not even trying to discourage that kind of stuff, it’s trying to keep it where it belongs and gain more interest back into the gameplay information.

i wouldnt call a lose battle trying to keep the site organized and more importantly, trying to keep the original purpose of the site

I guess I’ll comment on this as a newcomer. It’s probably the hype that brought me to fighting games. Yeah I’ve seen some matches on youtube before but always thought I wouldn’t be any good at the game and shouldn’t bother. I watched EVO this year because, well, I had a small interest. After watching it, I knew I wanted to play the game, I actually got really excited about it. I didn’t learn much from watching EVO, I knew that there was some complex stuff going on that I couldn’t understand. After watching for a bit I picked up on a few things like matchups and certain styles of play, etc, but still a lot probably went over my head. Now that I’ve come here to the ‘scene’ and am attempting to fit in my place, it seems a little weird. I watched on the endless stream the other night and people were just crapping on people who didn’t do so well or didn’t play their character the way they were supposed to. When that person commented and said they were still trying to learn how to play they got called salty. I feel like the hype surrounding all the top players is kinda trickling down into even the casuals or beginners, everything seems to be about hype now. Rather than teaching someone how to play it seems like the community would rather crap on them.

I would like to know more about top players and watch matches and be able to find out why people did certain things and what works best. As a new player I feel like while I wouldn’t be able to completely follow what’s going on, an analysis would be helpful. It would be nice to get more exposure to other players and other styles of play rather than the big celebrities.

But to go back to the newcomer thing, I’m sometimes afraid to ask questions as the scene seems to welcome new players with one hand and then hit them with the other. “You should come play this game, you should get involved with your local community, here’s how.” contrasted with “That’s a stupid question, you should already know that. You’re a bad player.” I’m not saying everyone is like this, but I’ve seen enough where I could see some people get discouraged and give up because of it.

This is just my opinion on about a week of lurking though, but I would really appreciate some of the things said by HAV in order to learn more and become a better player.

Ignore the stream chat, you’ll learn to filter out the trolling from real stuff with time.

Learning to watch match vids is somewhat a skill you pick up. Here’s advice on it

Don’t mind the tone. Domination 101 forum has a lot of topics worth reading.

Don’t make topics asking a single question unless there’s no Q&A thread, FAQ thread or General Discussion thread.

You need thick skin, don’t take offense and get baited into arguments about silly things. Someone will answer you (hopefully).
