Thanks for the advice. I’ve found some good resources, stuff to read and tutorial videos. Just feels weird that you have to dig through a lot of crap to get to the good stuff. I’ll take at that thread too. Right now I’m still looking for a decent price on a fightstick so I can start grinding.
One thing I’ve come to understand about watching stream commentary is that there are situations which warrant WAY more time to explain than the game gives you at the time. When those situations occur, often times someone will try to explain it, and then something else happens and they have to drop the explanation in order to stay current with what’s happening in the match. This is why it’s so hard to be a good analytical commentator; there are too many situations that would require you to literally pause the broadcast in order to explain to everybody what happens and why.
My suggestion would be that somebody take already recorded matches, and do commentary on them while being able to pause the match when needed, similar to the Super Turbo Saturdays videos (I think UltraDavid did something like this briefly, as well). They pause and rewind, replaying in slow motion just to convey the depth of certain points in the match to the audience. The newer crowd could definitely benefit from something like this.
its not hard to get stuff on the front page. If I could get kenny and christian on the front page you can write something up (air already does this on his blog) about top players and submit it for the front page.
I remember when SRK had a new article 2-3 times a month at most and now it’s 4-5 a day. I don’t think they are focusing on quality but just generating traffic coinciding with all these ads because there are people out there will get on several times a day to see what’s new. With as popular as this site is there should be more guest writers.
If the problem is that strategy articles get buried by news, why not just set up a strategy section which is completely separate from the news feed? I know Keits has noted that you can separate news articles from strategy articles if you sort by tags, but that solution is far from obvious. Also, by not making a greater distinction between news and strategy, SRK isn’t giving strategy the shine it deserves, and might be (or IS, judging by this thread) alienating the individuals who are interested in playing these games at the highest levels.
This solution solves a whole bunch of problems: strategy articles won’t get buried, and other content still has its place; strategy-oriented players will have their own, unpolluted section, which could very well inspire more players to produce more content; the creation of that section will allow SRK another way to prove its commitment to players, while still keeping its fan-oriented and traffic-generating news section; there is minimal coding/design/cost involved; etc.
But did you know he was 1 of the best Virtua Fighter players in Japan for a number of years before when you made this topic? Cause the REAL players did.
In fact I think VF is the 1st fighting game he got into competitively and the reason he started going to the arcades a lot.
i would read a write up of that nature and i think so would others. of course there might be some trolling but that can always be ignored. if you put it out there and it isnt obvious daigo dick riding or just general dumb shit then it would be cool. Gootecks and others werent houshold names when they stated putting guides and vids out. they just made sure it was good stuff
but a match vid breakdown would be cool. the problem is with the fanboy threads that the recent and new members create.
I don’t have much to contribute in terms of game knowledge that hasn’t already been discussed to death, but if there’s a way I can help by either compiling tournament results out of that subforum, gathering player information, or something of the sort I’m down. A menial information gathering task is something I’d be willing to work on with a team. In terms of write-ups and strategy, I’m not of much use.
I understand the push, but its hard to expect the majority of the community to know these kinds of things when -very- many people new to fighting games, not just Street Fighter, jumped on February 17, 2009 or later.
Better late then never though. I would also suggest that the results/videos for the more minor japanese tournaments be added to the front page. You could do the same thing for local tournaments to give some spotlight to rising stars.
We’re actually putting together an indepth matchup study with Sagat vs the Twins (complete with pro’s/con’s) and videos that quite a few of the SRK members have put their time into. That’s how we’re going about starting something for the community on a more serious scale. It’s not about winning/losing but for people to analyze what they’ve learned from SRK matchups and put it to test.
Well I somewhat relate this topic to the “who’s the best fighting game player in the world” thread where it was established that the players most deserving of respect are those that have done it over a wide range of games. Anyone that knows VF and SF knows that’s a really difficult transition so for Fuudo to have risen to the top in both raises his standing in my eyes. VF is a tough game with much stronger competition in Japan than anywhere else too so he deserved some sort of recognition before this.
Also I remember when articles about Kayane first made the the front page there was a lot of disdain and insults directed at her from those ignorant about what she’d achieved in Soul Calibur. She was beating 1 of the top US SC players when she was just 12 years old and went on to win and get to the finals of many SC tournaments. Fair enough if people didn’t know that but why all the vitriol? Couldn’t they have asked what’s she’s done first.
Someone went into a Viscant congratulation topic and was whining about him using Phoenix.
People don’t know about Viscant. He still posts here and has a thread in the Wesker forum detailing Wesker’s resets. He even made a tutorial with Cross Counter about MvC3 and went into detail about his team’s composition.
hahaha this thread is just about equalizing content between quality and crap. Well not so much crap as topics that dont really increase your intelligence. like hav said it is not really about fuudo or kayane, We just need the front page to expand peoples horizons and epand their view. I am just tired of people only thinking that daigo and justin are the only people that can win and if daigo loses saying shit like the tournament was rigged.
