WTF? This is beyond tragic! Lol surely a jest? Either way much love to everybody I met on this site and a hella fuck you to whoever is closing it down. Do we blame smash or mcribs?
Honestly we need a coordinated effort, between the 2 offshoots. People say they hate vanilla but preserving existing posts and accounts becomes possible with archives from the current srk which is important if possible for me.
It was a joke and was intended to be dumb, so at least you half read it correctly. It was in response to the notion that new players donât want to donate their time to learning very execution heavy games, where as in the past almost all games were execution heavy, requiring long endurance in score based games, and high skill and reactions in vs based games. In this day and age a keen eye and a quick twitch of an analogue stick while you eat doritos on the couch is all the skill it takes, which is still very impressive watching people quick scope a whole team in a FPS, but is far far less obscure and easier to get in to purely because of how the past generations of games have evolved since.
In America, that is partly down to Nintendo. Iâm not gonna argue the same case because if you didnât get the joke the first time you not gonna get it the second time, but what Nintendo did in America was introduce games where you didnât need a high score, or didnât need to play against another human, there wasnât any objective other than to reach the end however and whenever you chose to get there. So not including computer based games like D&D esque RPGs which were popular at the time, TLoZ was one of the first ever games to take the kids out of the arcades and into the home.
And that set a trend. It didnât mean arcade games died immediately, but it was a pivotal moment where people didnât need to get a high score or to beat the best player to get a buzz from playing games, that objective, that motivation and drive was no longer needed to keep pumping quarters into the machine, the element of competition and beating your rivals just didnât matter as much anymore. And thatâs the effect Nintendo had on the gaming industry that then lead to games like fighting games to be niche and none appealing to newer audiences. The buzz that got me playing FGs 20 years ago is just not the same thing that gets teens of this generation playing FGs.
And like you said, that motivation now is the fame and glory, not the buzz of competition, something that most people never achieve. What draws people to these games in this day and age is completely different and incapable of having the same effect on them.
I havent been involved with the SRK Forums side of things for a few years now. Once they handed off the reigns to Vanilla and their management team, I passed administratorship over to Preppy.
I post every now and again to just keep people in the loop with some insider knowledge, but in no way run the show anymore over here.
Inkblot owns the site and it was his decision to close the forums.
Which would mean that everything I said was correct. You guys didnât have Preppy give us a heads up, warning or anything else, we got a weird short communication from you in this thread after we get a surprise announcement from the front page.
Thatâs fucking trash. People have legit reason to be fucking hurt. At the very least we shouldâve been given a way bigger heads up or a damn chance to try and fundraise for this forum. Like I said in the post you quoted, I get them wanting to move and do anything else. Doing it this way is trash way to end things accidentally done by a guy who we owe a lot to; its an awful way to end things.
damn. maybe not a lot compared to some people but i made more posts on srk than any other forum iâve been to, and have been coming here longer. saw people join up and die in that timeframe. remember that akuma guy with the yu yu hakusho avs? we all saw that guy register, post, then pass away. plus the ogs like dasrik, mummy b, etc. ive never joined reddit and i abhor the idea of using facebook for reading fighting game shit. this place existed when our household got our first legit internet subscription.
in the final month they should bring back animated gif avatars so that we can use our oldest ones.
Iâd say you are - theyâve certainly bled for you. The question is what impact it makes. It seems like people are more excited about post-forum technologies like Discord. The forumâs value is what we make of it. If people arenât bringing knowledge here, then maybe those very substantial dollars are better invested elsewhere.
@pertho Iâve been mostly unreachable since early December when Wiz had reached out to me on a possibly unrelated note.
I take Decembers off from work and am hard to reach. I do know Wiz hit me up in early December on our normal communication channel but I only replied this week. Any failings there are on my side. Bad timing, perhaps.
Magnetro for example can confirm that he just got my Christmas gifts to him today.
We had been doing pretty well against the bots too.
