SRK Forums *NOT* closing down at the end of January 2018

Where is the vote?

Edit: missed the link. I’d like to restructure the site of it costs them $2k. We can lower that cost substantially.

Because The Cannons are no longer interested in running this part of the community. That in itself is fine; I owe them beers for a long time because of how awesome all of their for this community has been.

But everything seems to imply that they want a break from dealing with this shit (which is understandable). Unfortunately its being handled in the same way everything else in the scene is: behind close doors where nobody gets to give any input.

That lack of communication has plagued this scene long term and is one of the reasons why so much nonsense gets talked. Weird decisions get made and nobody can make heads or tails about them; then we get some short ass communication from Wiz that explains jack all and we get to hold that.

Its just the way its been.

Then someone needs to hostile takeover dat ass.

Probably this.

I can’t believe them cold shouldering us here like this. It’s like he’s talking about us while we’re in the same room. So disappointed in the way they are handling our final days together. :disappointed:

Yeah, back in the day the staff were a lot more down to earth with us and better in touch. I really wish Inkblot would just come into the forums and make a thread asking what we want from the forums and how much we’re willing to cough up. He can ask for some incentive donations right now and I will gladly do ahead and donate. But things need to change. I’m not really fond of the idea to donate money just to keep the forums how they currently are.

If we can go back to vbulletin or xenforo, get some rad skins, galaga shields and other premium perks back… sheeeit, I’m in for $20 month.

The FGC isn’t ran like a community anymore by these people. It’s just a business to them now. I’m sure they don’t give shit about what any of us want.

I love the FGC but “FGC” and “Business sense” historically do not go together.

Even at the very root where you challenge people to money matches and win, they will pay you later…much later. Then you forget that they owe you and everything is cool.

thanks i’ve been facebook stalking you too! congrats on becoming a family man!

Had they just come out and said they were in trouble and asked for donations, I would have donated without hesitation.

But to decide to close the forum without asking for any feedback first, makes me worried about what will happen when the donations run out.

Reading comprehension troubles for Tom there.

SRK forum costs 2 grand PER MONTH? heres some reference as comparison and ballpark- AWS dynamodb is a NoSQL database, and it charges per write capacity unit, which is roughly 1KB of writes per second. 5000 write capacity units is roughly 2 grand per month. So if SRK were implemented using dynamodb as a backend, it would cost 2 grand per month if people were making 5000 posts per second. Looking at the “what’s new” the last post on here was 3, 10, and 15 minutes ago at the time I am writing this. So even being generous with an upper bound and say SRK does 100 writes per second for its forums (it doesn’t and its more like < 1 per second), AWS calculator shows that to be 50$ per month.

Yeah there are additional costs such as EC2 instance to host the shit, but even then the cost is like 14 CENTS per hour for an m4 large (thats like 100$ per month, and let’s say you have 4 of them that’s still like 400$ per month), which i can tell you has enough hardware to handle plenty of damn traffic, much more than what srk gets (source: i work at amazon now and expedia before and we use aws and our applications get a lot more traffic than srk). Smaller instances are even more cheap

That’s just a ballpark reference for cloud hosting. If srk is not hosting on the cloud but colocated hosting, I wouldn’t know much about that, but the hardware costs would be one time for 1-4 servers, a load balancer, (and maybe order new hardware every few years if traffic increases), database is ZERO DOLLARS (unless they are dumb and buy oracle or SQL server, which for a forum is complete overkill), and then whatever costs to host it themselves at a datacenter. I don’t see why for a web forum the hardware would need to be good, cause its just simple reading/writing of text with some pix. really simple bare bones stuff. no need for a good CPU at all. Still don’t see it being 2k per month.

So they need to show the amount of traffic SRK gets because 2k sounds completely nonsensical to me. sounds like they’re getting ripped off

We are a lower value “project”. That hurt.

We’re not first and foremost a community of people to him.

Let’s see how much breast cancer money they raise next time.

Didn’t he go to Stanford? How is that higher education working out for this website lmao. No reading comprehension, can’t put together a simple budget, and hired Mr. Wizard.
No wonder people think the American University System is a scam and a joke.

Wow, I’m incredibly saddened. It was a great ride, and so many great memories and people on this place. Smh

Capcom should buy this site.
im serious. someone hit up Ono on twitter.

And watch as GD becomes Day 1 DLC? Fuck that… :bluu:

If Capcom took over, this could be a Capcom Unity ver. 2…yeah fuck that

Just an update on Shoryuken.net. It’s about 5 hours worth of work from being able to launch in decent, usable condition. We’re gonna pause for just a day or two to see what Inkblot & Co decide to do with this place, though.
