We don’t have anywhere near enough people in their 20’s joining SRK because fighting games are far too complicated to learn for the average 20 year old today who tends to have the concentration span of a gnat. Also the fighting game scene right now isn’t newb friendly or anywhere near as fun as it used to be especially in England. People get nostalgic about the arcade scene in the 90’s but the console fighting game scene was far better back then because almost everyone you knew was playing fighting games on consoles, you didn’t have to go to an arcades to challenge anyone.
Like I said, the main reason why SRK is dying out is because fighting games suck and we don’t have a variety of new fighters to choose from like we did in the mid 90’s to early 2000’s. If Capcom weren’t so damn lazy we would have had a new version of Rival Schools, Dark Stalkers, Star Gladiator, maybe even Alpha 4 and possibly a sequal to 3rd strike. All being a variety of fighters that appeal to different preferences in the community.
Me personally I’d be content with an updated version of hyper fighting with modern graphics. This is something basic that could have been created with a year or two. I find this more appealing than Capcom releasing the same SF HD remix, which looks even worse than the original game.
I think most if not all fighting game companies need to completely overhaul they way current fighting games are animated. I still find it strange that modern street fighter games with 3d models still animates like World Warriors with the whole crounching jab to the shin, and extended crouching Medium kick which looks so out-dated. Why not make all crouching punches body shots, or a crouching MK a standing round house to the leg? Also why not make blocking appear more visually pleasing and interactive with different types of blocks for different moves. These are just a few things they can do to make a difference and I can propose so much more.
SRK also need to evolve. Maybe have a section for independent fighting game designers to release games.
Say it aint so! Are the forums getting archived or anything? There’s so much information here (Tech Talk specifically) that I’ve been referring to for years now, some of which only exists here…
It’s all Nintendo’s fault. No honestly, go with me on this for a minute, I’ve thought this through. Us oldies were brought up in arcade environment, and the one single thing arcades had was competition. Everyone wanted the highest score on Space Invaders and Pac Man, and when their scores were over written they strived to take back their crown of the highest score. This attitude even stemmed into slightly newer games, like Street Fighter II, and you had the Tomo Ohira’s, the Mike Watson’s and the Jeff Schaefer’s of their time who everyone wanted to beat. The gaming industry, at least in America, was totally fuelled on competition and the desire to be the best and remain the best forever to come.
But then Nintendo came along with the NES, and along with it a game called The Legend of Zelda that had a battery in it, meaning people could play it at home and they could have this new cushy experience that they could play for days without having to start over, and this was the moment the arcade industry died. Now everyone “in Japan” wanted to play epic adventures like DQ and FF, and while some people in the west kept playing at arcades, slowly players wanted narrative and development, not competition and highest scores.
This was the starting point of the downfall of competitive gaming, and we’re lucky we came off the back end of it because we still strived for competition, but now that competition resides at home with powerful computers with internet connections where players shoot each other to be the highest rank, or race each other to be the fastest speed runner. This old genre from the golden age of arcade gaming just doesn’t appeal to younger people who never got to experience life inside an arcade.
So to that I say Nintendo, fuck you. Even though you brought SFII to the SNES and were partly responsible for this genres console success, you’re still ass holes for making arguably the greatest game ever at the time and ruining it for everyone.
This is quite possibly the dumbest shit you’ve ever posted, and believe me, you got a long ass list-- I’ve seen your posts in the Infinite DLC thread.
This is the result of constantly pushing for even mediocre fgs to be e-sports… Now everyone wanna be a e-celeb with stream views and retweets instead of grimy street warriors looking to prove they’re the best at their game of choice.
Now, the game takes a backseat to the level of buzz you can create for yourself playing whatever… Even fucking Smash players do the shit now.
Because they’re overpaying. I’ve worked for a guy who is a millionaire solely from owning multiple pop culture sites. He has several sites much bigger than SRK that don’t cost anywhere near that much a month. They need to ditch vanilla forums and go to a dedicated server elsewhere.
I have to second the question of why is that poll on twitter and not here?
