i had already stopped posting here regularly by then, but i definitely noticed this on teamliquid which was modded way worse and more strict. i never got banned once on SRK, but at teamliquid i’ve already been temp banned like 3 times when i joined there in like 2011. bunch of fascist fucks. their forum sucks and i definitely give zero fucks about the posters there or ever meeting them in real life.
i can definitely see how the e sport ruined everything - anytime a pro gamer said something funny on twitch such as “i hope you get cancer and die” they’d email the sponsors and get the pro gamer fired and the team to lose sponsor money. give me a fucking break. in a way, they are responsible for donald dump winning the presidency. dump isn’t good for much else, but his tweets are savage, and he triggers the justice crusaders, hence he has a huge fan base. i can only hope that the pendulum now swings the other way, the sjw all die of starvation because they can’t find a job in the real world, and soon thereafter donald dump gets beaten in his reelection race by the rock and/or oprah, order is restored, and gaming websites can be the wild west again and we all live happily ever after
edit: septimus fucking prime gracing us with his presence! we’re going down, but we’re going out in a big supernova of OGs!!!
Everything is what you make of it. I refuse to believe there are plain better alternatives. They’re not better. They’re just different. It’s hard to swallow that from people who admittedly don’t use this place much any more. It’s not really about you or the others like you anymore is it? It’s about all the people that still do post here because they’ve made something of it that they want in their lives.
I think that’s accurate for everyone, but we’re also at an interesting crossroads where I feel like a lot of people are realizing just how much they hate social media. I wonder where this is headed. I largely quit social media a number of months ago and it was the best decision I’ve made in a very long time. I don’t see forums coming back—much like arcades—but I hope more people jump on the fuck facebook wagon.
By and large social media is for people you know as well. Yeah, there are strangers that follow you but you don’t engage in multiple paragraph long posts and in-depth debates. Yes, Twitch gives you a soapbox for that, so does YouTube, but more often than not unless you’re someone well-known you’re talking to yourself. On a forum you get back and forth.
Forums are where you have long discussions and debates with random strangers over practically anything and it can be an insightful experience. Reddit probably emulates this best outside of the traditional forum set-up but the problem with Reddit is you get hundreds of new names daily, not the same few dozen. Reddit is like the big city compared to a country town.
