i havent said the calcs are useless, but they are annoying as fuck to read every single fucking time anyone dares to say that X random pokemon is good for something, most ppl that plays in the OU/ubber meta doenst know shit about pokemon at all because they just x-copy every goddamn set they “think” is gdlk.
in the same page for me is more important to understand type charts, natures and base stats (speed tier basically) before the calcs, calcs are as good as the player using them
if you say X is good for something, then back it up and say it’s good for something, the calcs prove that it’s probably not reliable
type chart is second hand nature and calcs are more useful as you can still take a fuckton from a resisted move (like weavile’s frail ass), immunities are useful to know
you don’t need to know natures, you can always look it up
speed is also included on the calcs (kinda), you can set it up so you can see which pokemon is faster, but still, knowing how much damage each pokemon do to each other help more in a winning situation than knowing the true speed of a pokemon, for example
megattar is at full life against a subdisable gengar that you know has leftovers/black sludge, even though he’s faster, you know he can’t OHKO you while you can OHKO him with pursuit, speed here is irrelevant since you win this situation all the time unless he has a sub up (which in this scenario, he doesn’t), while knowing speed is very important, knowing who wins the situation is much more important and that’s where calcs come into place
i know how to use calcs, but i dont have to use it just to justify a pokemon being good or bad because you dont have to do damage with everyone, to me bad mentality is to think that good pokemon = one turn sweep with no set up because is 99% chance of OHKO goddamn elekid
I really hope those nice people over in Japan and on these boards can trade off some of the past gen Pokes on Wonder Trade when Pokébank arrives. I really don’t want to go back to the Dark Ages aka my Pokémon DAWKNESS cart and grind.
Don’t worry, WS… I’m sure between all of us, there’s gonna be a ton of old school pokes with great IVs/Egg Moves. I know that I personally have several boxes of 5th Gen mons with their Egg Moves and at least 3IVs on my Black 2 cart at the least.
I fucked around with the simulator for a little while, but it wouldn’t let me try out my team. Wouldn’t let me get past the “make a username” part for some reason, so I guess I’ll just have to fully try it out when I get home.
That shit’s crazy though. I never knew about this. You literally have all the options at your disposal for every single Pokemon. I can see myself referencing this thing on a daily basis…
To the chandelure vs Aegis bull touched on if chandelure comes in on aegis when rocks is out it gets OHKO by shadow sneak so you can’t come in on aegis.
no phantom, i already did excadrill (since it was the easiest), i’ll train them all so they have the full moveset and then to level 100 for battling purposes (as i can still do level 50 for battles as well)
Damage calcs are fun, maybe because I’m a numbers guy…
But then again, Pokemon Showdown did make their damage calculator MUCH more user friendly.
Put in the pokemon you are interested in seeing and then you get instacalcs.
You used to have to put in the base numbers by hand. It was too annoying to bother with. It’s less tedious than having to test it in battle.
***For example, I calculated that mold breaker pinsir does around 72% damage after rocks when using earthquake against a Rotom.
Even if Mega Pinsir had mold breaker, he only has a 6% chance of ko’ing a Rotom running full health and then Pinsir gets burn crippled.
But the percentages don’t mean anything if you don’t know how they apply. You’re not supposed to remember the numbers. To me, those percentages mean that “I can’t OHKO a Rotom unless I’ve dropped it down below 3/4ths of a lifebar” since the game doesn’t show you life in terms of percentages.
tl;dr
Don’t be scared of the numbers fam, it allows you to simulate things without having to go out and find out the hard way. But don’t let numbers prevent you from testing shit in battle.
i love this thing really, but it will never be more important than actually play the game, testing and discovering because you actually were toying with the calcs is pretty gdlk
