When it uses Acrobatics the animation is so slick. As badass as Brave Bird looks, there’s a certain cool factor you get executing DBZ Acrobatics with a flying Pokemon.
Talonflame is definitely my favorite of the early flying Pokemon in any gen. Aerialate and Gale Wing definitely need to be retroactively put on a few choice Flying types. (Yanmega, Staraptor)
It’s funny how much Talonflame was initially underestimated when it was first announced. And who could blame people? Fire/Flying is a crappy typing, and it was an early bird Pokemon, so it couldn’t have been that good, right? Then I see this thing on 7 teams in a row on Showdown.
Talonflame is Pokemon which easily will impact metagame much stronger than Staraptor, because he actually has GREAT double STAB combination, while Staraptor’s only good STAB is on Brave Bird. Staraptor REALLY WISHES it had STAB on Close Combat because many Steels that aren’t Fighting weak wall it to no end and Normal is really meh typing offensively, ALSO walled by defensive Rock and Steel types. Flare Blitz obliterates most of the bulky Flying resists (Skarmory, Jirachi, Magnezone and Metagross have no chance to survive a STAB Flare Blitz). Another big factor is that Staraptor doesn’t learn Swords Dance, it’s much slower and he wishes to have such an incredible priority like Talonflame has. The only advantage Staraptor has is that he has a much easier time handling Tyranitar (and Talon can still beat T-tar with Steel Wing, so it’s not that big of advantage) and hitting harder off the bat. Staraptor is more of a hit-and-run (and a Stealth Rock weakness doesn’t help here) or a wallbreaking Pokemon, dealing as much damage as possible early/mid game to allow others teammates to finish, and Talonflame looks like a great revenge killer or late game sweeper.
i admit i definitely underestimated talonflame, that thing fucks shit up
talonflame isn’t really a revenge killer, it’s more of a clean up
it comes in after you rid the opponent of his rocks and talonflame counter and he proceeds to run train, all it needs to do is get 1 SD off, and then kill as many pokemon as you can before it dies, seriously…priority brave bird is stupid, oh and it being a fire type means it gives no fucks about bullet punch
Entry Hazards are a lot worse. Stealth Rock and Sticky Webs can literally decide a match by themselves if there’s nothing to get rid of them. THAT’S what’s stupid.
Not running Spin or a Defogger at least is just a bad idea in general. On the subject of Sticky Web, I haven’t seen it nearly as much as I was expecting too on PS. A lot less TTar than I was expecting as well. Probably because my rating is low and I’m fighting all the other people using test teams as well.
talonflame clearly has competitive use. in fact it’s one of my favs to use just because how stupid he is. i just can’t get behind its design or its name though lol.
i’ve tried breeding parting shot onto a few pokemon, like zorua (which i really really really wanted to have the move) but i don’t think any pokes are going to get it. hopefully i will get surprised but it’s not looking good.
