SRK Competitive Pokemon Battling Thread: Logoghoul and White Shadow Win! Bye Gen 6!

Or you could not ban anything, and just have everybody throw haymakers and nukes everywhere, lol.

Chaos! O, glorious flames of crimson chaos stretching towards the horizon…

so basically…ubers?

Nope. Them sissies still cry about Moody… When I can shit on Arceus with Bidoof again then it will be fine.

There is nothing wrong with Blaziken that can’t be handled by Smogonbird or a well-placed Aqua Jet or Earfquake.

(…Oh gods. Mood4food77 and po pimpus agreed on something and the universe didn’t immediately explode? ***What is this devilry?***)

So noted about Unaware Clefable, though I’ll admit that all of this Unaware talk just makes me want to use Bibarel.

…Anyway, just a heads up, I’ll probably be on PokemonShowdown tonight, but I probably won’t actually be around for the tournament until tomorrow night at earliest. It’s more likely that I won’t really be around until Thursday night given I’ll probably be really damn tired by tomorrow night, but I’ll be around Saturday and Sunday and probably Friday too. [/probably]

But, yeah, I really need to do other work and I also need to decide on a team still.

Never said that list was perfect!

Darkrai and Deoxys are out. Let me know if I forgot anyone else.

Implying that you can pull that off first, at least.

But yeah, not enough people use Slowbro

the fact that that’s an actual scenario pretty much shows how broken moody is

I won’t get into the Blaziken debate yet again, but that thing’s only got 4 moves and can only use one of them at a time.

I thought everyone’s favorite Landshark was tough enough to switch into a Flare Blitz, watch Super Chicken eliminate the majority of its health, then Welcome it to EARF.

for the record, chomp dies from a HJK after a flare blitz when blaziken carries life orb, gets straight up murked at +2
252+ Atk Life Orb Blaziken Flare Blitz vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Garchomp: 136-162 (37.9 - 45.2%) – guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Blaziken High Jump Kick vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Garchomp: 298-352 (83.2 - 98.3%) – guaranteed 2HKO

now you gotta hope he doesn’t have protect

K we’re starting.

My original post, spoilered:

[details=Spoiler]It’s going to be on Pokemon Showdown. http://play.pokemonshowdown.com/
We will play their OU format.
Double elimination, i’ll make a randomized bracket on challonge.
2/3 all the way with the usual grand finals bracket reset if the loser’s side takes the first set.

On team switching: For this particular one, please use one team for the entire duration of the tournament. It will be hard to regulate this [e.g. movesets/stats in particular], but one way is to send replays to me of every tournament match via PM.
If I suspect you I will PM you, if I have real proof [two replays of you with different pokemon altogether] I will give your opponent the option of taking the win and moving on.

If you are new to Pokemon Showdown
Make a team with the team builder. When you click New, look at the Format drop down box and select “OU”.
When you are done making your team (don’t forget to change your EVs and IVs to what you want them to be, and remember that Hidden Power will automatically change your IVs) you should test it out on Pokemon Showdown’s OU Ladder just in case it has anything that isn’t within the OU rules (it won’t let you join a game on the ladder if so).

Matchmaking: I will ask that you figure out matchmaking yourselves either via PM or within this thread.
The easiest way is to use Pokemon Showdown’s built in chat rooms. Pick one of the less populated ones (for example, Video Games) and meet up in the same chatroom. There you can challenge each other under the OU rules by clicking on the other’s username in the chatroom.

Replays: Showdown has a replay function (click “Share Replay” after the match), however, please do not post replays in this thread, at least until the tournament is over.
In fact, if you PM me your replays, I’ll go through them and post which ones I think were good at the end of the tournament ;]

Please do not post in this thread anything giving away strategies/movesets of your opponent’s Pokemon.
The names of Pokemon should be okay, since there is no team switching and you should see your opponent’s entire team in Team Preview anyway.

-notes-
I have the following reasons for 2/3 and no team switching:
I’m possibly open to 3/5 as it gives players more time to adapt and flesh out strategies vs your opponent’s team and without switching it can be a big deal. However, I wanted to keep the matches somewhat quick.
No team switching is because I want to avoid counter picking issues between matches. It also makes picking your team much more important from the get go, which I think is realistic.

Alright, signups start now. Let me know if you have issues with stuff.[/details]

TL;DR: 2/3.** Choose one team for the whole tournament**. Be familiar with matchmaking.
Pokemon Showdown, OU.
PM me match replays, don’t post them here. Don’t post moves or strats, but Pokemon names should be okay.

Matchups:
Bulldancer vs Co Jones,
Rooster vs DukeC,
Zekira vs Mood4food,
Infernoman vs GodotsRevenge

the damned and po pimpus have byes, and are waiting for the winners of Bulldancer vs Co Jones, and Rooster vs DukeC, respectively.

Bracket on challonge:

good luck [lol] have fun, get these matches goin.

okay, the only thing i want to bring up before we all start is team switching, why are you not allowing team switching? out of curiosity

As I’ve stated before, I want to avoid counter picking issues between matches, which will cut down on time if someone wants to create a counter team while playing the other person which is entirely in the realm of possibility without that rule on something like Pokemon Showdown. It also makes picking your team much more important from the get go, which I think is realistic.
Also I’ve never been to an in-person tournament, but I’m assuming there’d be some sort of limit on switching teams, correct me if I’m wrong because I google’d it a few times and couldn’t find anything. So I just went with the standard TCG tournament thing which is no switching decks between matches.

Where you want us to meet up? The video game section?

Showdown name: CastlefordGaming. Too lazy to remember my other password so I just made a new one.

i think vgc lets you switch teams but you obviously can’t make a team on the spot

you can’t compare tcg to pokemon as there is a much larger random factor in the game, giving you an easier time to get around your weakness

with pokemon, let’s say zekira’s team has a huge weakness to pokemon A, and i use pokemon A on my team, this already gives me a huge advantage over him right off the bat that he’ll have to deal with for at least 2 battles and can’t do anything about, yes you can play around it but this is much harder to achieve in pokemon than it would be in TCG due to having almost a 100% certainty of facing pokemon A

i mean, it’s obviously up to you (or up to a vote if you so choose), this is just my stance on it, i find competitive pokemon to be closer to competitive fighting games, you use what you know and have the option to counterpick and hope it works

Alright! I got a bye! Not last place!

Also just to let everyone know…I’m a go a little try hard. So if my team looks standard ish…well…you were forewarned…

Alright I can play on weekdays during 2000 - 2300 on GMT+8. I’m out of town this weekend until around Sunday afternoon though.

(just in case someone asks: company internet blocks the Javascript scripts of PS, so I can’t do it here. Plus I’m in freaking work)

I’ll also be appearing as Zekira G. Drake on PS.

And yeah I guess a central meetup-lobby will be convenient, so that we can check when the other one is online or not

I could.

Might as well. No point picking and choosing which ones deserve to be banned and which ones don’t. Ban them all and eliminate the problem, just like the Megas.

There are things I can regulate and not regulate lol, it seems extreme but I’d rather it be in a controlled extreme than a “lol now that i know his team i’m just going to run 3 hard counters and hope he doesn’t switch after he wins” kind of deal.

Here’s my main argument; I’m not going to do something along the lines of fgc - player A vs player B, game 1 goes to A, and A can’t switch but B can. Not gonna do it.
If you let A and B blind pick each time, there’s [if both players play optimally] no room for adaptation. Two or three battles between completely new teams.
If you run what I’m running, there is room for adaptation. Yes, there can be a huge counter that your team doesn’t account for, but for now I think that doesn’t mean you should be able to completely change your team when you realize that after the fact.

If you want to have a bigger pool of pokemon, we can, down the line, run things like having 2 possible teams to pick, or a pool of 8 pokemon to use. That adds extra moderation on my part and consumes extra time. I am willing to do it, but everyone participating should be too. As it stands, I think it adds too much complication to be worth it at the moment.

Matchmaking should be done via private message. I do not expect for yall to wait in a lobby for each other, lol. But yes, it’s easy to private message, then meet up in one of the less populated lobbies to get to Challenge each other with the chat interface.
