This is really impressive, no other car company offers you 700+ HP for this price, that kind of power is limited to 250+K cars. A 700hp car with standard factory warranty. And it’s not even bosted to hell. ~+8 of boost, and the pulley’s are rated to go up to 14k rpm and are only spinning at ~7.5+k rpm.
And no it doesn’t turn, but if that’s what you care about buy a fucking Corvette, Viper, NSX, etc. As it stands, if you want a pony car that’s in a class of its own, it’s this, the SRT Hellcat or the z28. Ford now has to play catch up.
So I have now moved to Chicago. I see a lot of really nice cars, I know I am about to buy a newer car for year round driving, and since there will be snow in the winters I am leaning towards these:
Bmw 335i xdrive
Subaru Sti
Mitsubishi Evo
Honestly the Bimmer and Subaru are probably my favs. Since I got an actual career job now, these cars are finally within my financial reach.
Evo isnt a poorly made car really, its just the secret is that the new motor for the Evo’s is actually korean made. No matter what they all break, All 3 of those cars are pigs for gas and repairs are freakishly expensive. I have 2 friends who drive STI’s and they love them but one had some really bad luck with his. My gf has an wrx and i love driving subarus lol. My other friend has a 335 and he really likes it a lot. Dont know anyone who drives evo x… But i almost bought one lmao. That said there really isnt a bad choice there. If you’re going for class, go for BMW, For tuner points STI and for under the radar appreciation evo10.
Well I am a huge BMW fan. The only reason why I would go for the 335 xdrive is because it is 4 wheel drive. Of course my dream car is a E92 M3, but I could go for the 1 series M if they actually released it here in the states. I don’t know honestly I know I wouldn’t mind something sporty that can still be kind of fun to drive in the winters.
Well all of those cars are AWD so i kind of figured that was importnant. I’m in canada and those are like 3 of my fave cars as well! So I kind of feel like I’ve gone down the same road before. My fave is the STI personally but my next car i think will be a 335 with X drive. Dont get the 1M. Or any of the 1 series. They’re pretty rare and rather expensive if they have issues.
Yeah, the only reason I even wanted a 1M was because of the episode of Top Gear that was on it. My Uncle and cousins all have the 3 series with xdrive and they swear by it. I think it would be a good move. I won’t really do too much to it. And then when I get more space, I will purchase a space where I can work on my project cars Magnus Walker style.
Side note. I love how Magnus fixed this 911 Turbo, truly beautiful.
its mechanical components are of better quality, but doing launches breaks the transmission and ruins the clutch in 6-7 passes.
its bad on gas, short gears.
the STI will always have bad styling and not great interior build, but they have the most robust build of all three.
bmw has the interior quality, , but bmw maintenance costs amd repair. but its a good car all round.
Hearing about people that owned EVOs, STIs, and BMWs, they all have their problems. Just pick what you like and be prepared to deal with possible issues.
I’ve heard similar things depending on the generation (E36/46 had some pretty bad issues). My issue with Mercedes is that their sport cars don’t come in a standard manual transmission (SLK 250 being the only current model that still offers a manual transmission, I think). I like the sound of the AMG model Mercedes, but the lack of a “stick” shift option just turns me completely off of them.
Very similar in a lot of ways. BMW has more bushings issues but thats about it in my experience.
Buy a 190e 2.3-16 or see if you can find a 2.5-16. Most of those are manuals.
The E36 is a dope car. I’m probably picking up an M3 tomorrow. It’s easy to work on in a pinch like an Mx-5 and the biggest issues are rear bushing, water pump, and radiator. Just fix those every 40-60k miles and you’re good. It’s about 300$ in reoccurring maintenance every couple/few years. Really not too bad at all.
These days though I’d rather go automatic because their more efficient than a manual. Unless I’m building something for the track I usually stick to the automatics since their cheaper and more efficient.
Edit: Reading earlier in the thread about restos. You can buy or fabricate the parts yourself pretty easily/cheaply these days. Just cut, sand, tick weld, sand and you got yourself the same damn thing. The only issues obviously if it’s wreck damage, then I don’t know what you want to do with it.
Taking a stab in the dark. Anyone who ever owned a 96 jeep Cherokee, or similar model, had issues with the doors not shutting? It’s usually just me in the car, but I went to give a friend a lift the other day, opened the door, she got in, tried to shut it and it just bounced right the fuck off. I had no way to fix it at the time, so I held the door shut with a tow strap until I got home. Took the interior panel off the door and sprayed some PB Blaster in there, waited a bit, and wiggled the rubber part that latches back and forth a bit. Eventually pulled the door really hard from the inside and mashed on the lock button. Interior panel is still of and don’t trust the door enough to open it again but at least the door is shut and locked for now. Solutions?
No M3 for me. I went in and the car had a dead battery, failed electronic locks on every door except for front driver side. Okay interior, needed new bushings badly, suspension was shit, the transmission was good. Needed a new water pump, fuel pump, fuel filter and injectors. I told them I’d pay around 5500 for it with all the work I needed to do. They said the lowest they would go is 7500 if I bought today with 3 grand down. They did the whole “it’s a rare car, and M3!” like I wasn’t aware the only difference is the badges and the engine from the 325. I would have had to change the radiator, hosing, basically an entire maintenance job to make up the entirety of the cars life. sigh If he would have went to 6500 I may have bought. They also brought in 4 sales people telling me the KBB price and other prices around it for similar models. They pulled "This one in Washington has 230k and is selling for 11k! I told them that’s asking not selling price.
Also the car ran like shit. I am driving a fucking Dodge Grand Caravan right now from 2003 that feels like a Rolls Royce in comparison to the M3.
My mechanic says BMWs aren’t reliable and are a pain in the ass to maintain. He mentioned the radiator hose having silicon fittings or ends? so you can’t just get any regular hose you have to get the super special expensive BMW hose. BMW gotta be a hoe like that. Also, he said you need weights on the seats to do an alignment as opposed to just doing the alignment. He also said the suspension feels really smooth because it has rubber parts which need to be changed out after three years. Apparently, they have a lot more problems than that.
You can do the swap for cheap, it’s not too bad. You can get any regular hose. The suspension he means the bushing which need to be replaced every 30-40k miles. BMW require as much work as any other car. They get a bad wrap because in the 80’s and 90’s mechanics started telling people they’re harder to work on when in reality they really aren’t. The only problem is that if you have electronics issues and you need to reset the cpu then you need to reprogram the entire car. They’re really easy to work on in my experience. I guess if you think taking off a hood on something is difficult than it’s a pain.
@Pedoviejo Yeah, people do and it’s kind of frustrating. In general they’ll say whatever they want to get their price. The problem is I’m a much harder negotiator than the idiots that walk onto the lot. I recently talked a guy down on a Mercedes from 4k to 2k and walked because he didn’t give me the price sooner. People call me an asshole in negotiations, but it’s my money that I earned. You are privileged to have my business. I could go anywhere and I chose a place I felt was best for business. Can’t win em all. I’m now looking at a Nissan 240sx. If I can get it down to where I want it I’ll be going up this week to snag it. I gotta see if I can get a mechanic to check on it beforehand. If not I’ll set up an appointment. My #1 rule is check it out myself, if I love it, make sure I have an appointment to make sure the unbiased party doesn’t love it.
