Yeah when I was in high school I was looking at buying a car and I wanted a 240, but around that time Initial D and the Fast and the Furious came out, and all of a sudden kids only wanted imports they could slap a fart cannon and other rice on. 240’s were selling for at least double what a car that old/mileage actually should have, prices have come down to a more reasonable level the last few years from what I can tell skimming the classifieds.
IMO a REAL overpriced car/holds it’s value to ridiculous levels is any MR2.
Was absolutely in love with it until I sat in one.
Worst. Visibility. Ever.
Driving position also sucks. And the hard plastic door liners were a unwanted surprise as well. Other than that, the car is awesome, but unfortunately I’ll never buy one now… and position/terrible visibility issues really aren’t ones they can fix in a refresh. So I’m stuck waiting probably 6+ years until there’s a new model.:annoy: Though that experience did make me more interested in an 05 Goat. Or maybe a G8 GXP down the road.
Right now it looks like either the Toyobaru FT-86, 370Z, Genesis Coupe, or 2011+ Mustang GT 5.0 will be my next car when I get rid of my WRX.
You’re not kidding. A friend of mine in the military who had just returned from Japan told me about Silvia’s and the SR20 swap back in about 2002. I almost went and bought one, in retrospect it would have been a good idea. By 2004 the drift craze was in full effect and 240’s had tripled or quadrupled in price. They are starting to come down again, but I think it’s more due to age than anything now.
Overpriced = MKIV 93+ Supra Turbo
Drift tax = AE86 Toyota Corolla
For 240’s, you gotta know where to buy, look harder, and be patient. There isn’t much drift tax on 240s anymore. You can buy a clean one for 3.5 to 6k, and for 13 to 15k you can get one completely gangsta.
Even up north here, where 240’s are much more rare, the prices have all went down. Prices range from state to state, cheapest in CA, TX and NY (Don’t quote me on the last one) where they were more plentiful. They’re most expensive in the middle states.
mmm super advans. somehow out of all the cars i’ve seen them on, they perfectly match silvia’s.
so i’m kind of in a rut really, about time to let go of my audi TT and my options in my range:
god tier FT-86. car is just secks… the big problem = have to wait another 2-3 years before production models get released on this side of the coast  … but the styling + RWD + a flat four in the engine bay = success.
top tier
08+ Subaru WRX [sedan]. not a fan of the hatch but the sedan’s grew on me. it doesn’t have the “high school” appeal that of the bug eyes, peanut eyes and hawk eyes… but more class then the previous gens… kind of like a smaller legacy. which is a plus.
06+ m-benz 230 sport. class class class @ an affordable cost. but it is german… and maintaining my audi wasn’t the cheapest lol. even doin majority of the labor, it’s a p.i.t.a. and breaks the wallet at times
What do you home mechanics recommend for getting under the car? I bought these ramps, but they are only like 6-7 inches high, and my Supra is way too low for them to be useful to me. I barely was able to fit underneath put my catalytic converter back in to pass emissions today. What about those lockable jacks?
Also, is there a good basic tool list to start with and what they do? All my tools are pretty much electronics stuff, not very good automotive tools. I am hella broke though.
For that supra, get a metric tool set with wrenches and sockets. The main ones you’ll use are 10,12,14 and 15 mm. Pliers, an adjustable wrench, and a few screw drivers, just because. You would be a lot better off getting a hydraulic jack with a set of jack stands. Those are just the mad basics, but should be enough to get you started
Weird question, if I was going to remove my turbo to rebuild it, is it possible to reprogram using my boost controller to not use any boost and remain driveable while I send it in?
I wish there was some kind of database of pictures of various types of cars with various types of rims so you could easily pick a car, it’s color, and then change rims on it to see what they looked like.
By end of next year I want to have my Supra cleaned up and show-quality.
Now I’m sure all of you are like, ‘So?’ Well…Buick is also going to make a high preformance version called the Buick GS. It’ll have 325 hp and will be based off of the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia VXR.
