Tom Cannon put up a poll on Twitter today asking if people serious about keeping the forums around would be willing to give to a Patreon or something of the like.
As of right now with nearly 1000 votes, the results are 73% no, 27% yes.
Bad sign for anybody still holding out hope for SRK living past the end of the month.
Not very smart of him to post that someplace where ANYONE can vote.
You got about as many loud-ass mofos practically *cheering * for whatās happening.
Indeed. So many competing sites would KILL to have an amazing community like ours, and thatās exactly what they are doing by voting on this poll. Killing SRK.
I also threw my hat in the ring to step up to set up a successor board. I have already talked with one of the developers of phpBB that would help with the migration due to the size of the board. I also took the liberty of registering srkforums.com
We should talk sometime. Iāve used SMF, but as youāve stated, itās dated. The development of the software has stalled as 2.1 has been āin developmentā for over 3 years (and itās not like itās a total rewrite either).
phpBB has served me very well, and I think that itās the best out of the free board software. Very stable codebase, and is updated 2-3x per year. Given its huge popularity, finding extensions and mods for the most asked-for features shouldnāt be difficult at all.
However, before we even get to that point, I think it might be best to go with a dedicated server option (virtual or physical) for the board. The resources that the board would require is simply too heavy for just a regular shared hosting account, wouldnāt you agree?
LMAO, so he asks about the fate of SRK on a diferent platform to people who donāt use SRK?
BRILLIANT!!!
You can bet your ass that most of them are people who left at some point because they were too soft to handle SRK
I have already seen some of those type celebrating that srk will be gone because they are still butthurt.
Glad to see we have a new member on the SRK revival force! Once we know how migration efforts are going, we can coordinate our efforts!
Iām on shared hosting now but Iām willing to upgrade my plan depending on the needs of the forum. What would really be useful is information on how many people are using the boards these days. SRK has had many many members over the years, but frequent logins and actual posts have dropped. I imagine a small, dedicated forum with the OGs/people who still use this forum regularly is pretty easy to manage. I might not be able to support moving the massive amount of old content over, but if we are forced to have a fresh start Iām pretty sure itās perfectly manageable with what Iāve got.
For reference, I own srk2.com. Forum is already running there but please do not sign up or anything because Iām breaking things on the regular. =)
Anyway, hereās my current status report:
Animated avatars: done
Forum theme: done in the next day or so
Rep system/upvoting: not sure because most of the options seem janky right now. A lot of the rep systems seem like shaky bolted-on stuff. More testing required.
User-selectable themes/colors: planned. Pretty sure I know how to do it. Will try soon.
Things Iām just thinking about for now:
Image uploading is currently enabled but I might turn it off due to resource drain. I donāt know what Iāll do if the site goes down due to the sheer number of booty pics
Special ranks/privileges for SRK refugees
SRK wiki is dead and unused. Maybe a knowledge base forum where relevant content from other dead places can be stored.
Polls are currently not enabled. Do people even use those? Not sure.
@bchan009, you may notice I only joined 10 months ago but have about 1500 posts. I am here everyday.
If you go back and look at the SFV Lounge in the SFV forum, youāll see that itās really active (though it has died down since the news broke out as a lot of the members have ran to Discord so no one gets lost, but they complain about it and will go to any forum once thereās stability).
After quick calculations, that thread averages roughly 350 posts a day since I joined (you may only see 90 or so pages, but a new thread is created every 500 pages, with 40 posts per page).
