[SR$2k Dev Thread] I'll set up an SRK successor board if you guys need one

Hopefully no one’s jumping the gun too fast and all those who are planning on making successor sites are at least talking to each other.

I know someone in the closing down thread sticky mentioned he already registered the domain shoryuken.net. His name escapes me right now.

The idea was that ad revenue from both the forums and the front page would help cover all the costs. However, and while I don’t have the exact numbers for this, from what I’ve been told, we’re getting significantly less hits on the forums, and majority of people on it are using ad blockers.

It was me who said that. I don’t know if I’d really call it jumping the gun since Tom’s statement offered no hints whatsoever at the possibility of the forums living on, being passed over to someone else… nothing. Not an ideal way to handle things for such a long-standing and dedicated community but its his site and his decision so we just have to roll with it. They had to know beforehand that some members here were not just gonna let SRK die like that, so the fact that they didn’t mention kinda made the impression they were just gonna let whatever happens happen. A simple thread by staff announcing that the forums will be closing but that they’re willing to cooperate with other people helping SRK stay alive would have been great, but that didn’t happen. And less than a month isn’t a lot of time to set up a new domain and forums in time to make sure everyone from the current ones gets the message before the closure. You could call it jumping the gun or simply just having to act quickly considering the hand that was dealt.

Like a lot of the older crew, I haven’t posted here much since it went to Vanilla. However, I still read the forums pretty frequently and I play fighting games with good friends from here on a daily basis, and we just started chatting about the possibility of helping SRK live on shortly after its demise was announced. It was convenient because we had already played around with the idea of starting a new fighting game forum back around '09. But it’s not just about creating a new fg forum, SRK is kinda special and, while technically just a forum, it means something to a lot of people. For many of us, it was our internet childhood, or where we learned how to really play fighting games, or just where we’ve gone for so many damn years now to have some fun and escape from the often times shitty real world that we live in. There have been a lot of changes to this place that were for the worse, but the idea of a an SRK that’s for the members and solely by the members just really sounded like a good idea to get it back to its once glorious state. So we acted on it.

I don’t think this thread was even up at the time we decided to go for it. It sucks that several people have the same idea but, at this point, we’ve already put good money into the domain, dedicated server and, while the guy doing the custom art and themes is a friend, he’s still getting paid because it’s a lot of work and we want it to look hot af, not like this pathetic piece of shit we’ve had for years now, lol. So I dunno what to say about the two separate crews making new sites. Just wanted to post the story on shoryuken.net in this thread so everyone knows that nobody is trying to step on anyone’s toes. We just want to see SRK survive and hopefully start a new chapter that’s more like the older SRK in spirit.

This is why I hate it when people jump the damn gun and no one interacts with one another.

Put ads on SRK, ads are so fucking massive that a user literally has one ad covering one half of the site and a second one covering the bottom, various users stop browsing because they were apparently huge security risks on top of making the site terrible to browse, but sure, the people using the site are the assholes.

You don’t need ads to cover the cost required for SRK to run properly and at a good speed. There are enough people here willing to donate a little bit monthly to cover the cost. If you’re running SRK strictly for the community, all you have to do is be transparent with the members about the costs, only accept what’s needed, and keep it ad-free. Boom, everyone’s happy. There are so many better and cheaper options out there for a forum this size besides Vanilla’s bullshit. But I respect the fact that the Cannon’s and Mr Wizard already have a lot on their plates, and that having to deal with a better way to keep the forums running on top of that is a lot to handle. I just think it would have been easy to find the people who are willing to do it if it meant SRK dying.

We could literally hold a yearly donation drive to cover costs. With twitch and all that, raising the 15k needed to run the forums wouldn’t be all that hard.

But you know, god forbid we get any communication from anybody. I respect the hell out of the Cannons but they’d rather to talk anywhere that’s not SRK. I don’t fault them for it but it hasn’t been without consequence.

Its just how things shook out.

But you can’t fault anyone for it. The official announement was just stating they’re closing down at the end of the month, without even providing a hard deadline. And with what seemed to be no hope for keeping SRK alive. People panicked, and some good people with good motives tried to do what they could for everyone to find a new home.

The next couple of weeks could be bumpy, but it seems like there will be good options at the end of it all. The best option, of course, would be to keep this database, or migrate it somewhere safely.

Anyways, it seems that everyone is on the same page now.

By the way, just to remind people. @“Darc Requiem” created a free zetaboard (http://s15.zetaboards.com/SRK_Asylum/index/) with mine and @Volt 's help, but it is more for back-up measures so people could get their footing. We’ve only really asked people to save the link incase SRK disappers before any other alternatives can be made. I don’t think any of the people that have signed up (including us) have given up on SRK yet and we are willing to move with the flock.

AGDQ just had the shittiest, most boring, most uneventful, dry, scrubby speed run marathon ever a dude got bodied in the first boss of Skyrim and had to stop to put it on God mode! and still they managed to raise 1.5 million and we cant do 15K a year?

:bluu:

Since Jayce is talking with Wiz and Wiz has mentioned the tech talk forums being “worth a damn” I’d like to hear from him before any big efforts happen. I do think the experimentation with vanilla is a good measure also. A big part of why we are in this mess is vanilla hosting costs. If we can drop those to half it will help in the long run anyways.

GD, TT and FG forums are the most important to keep.
damn, the prospect of getting animated avs back is giving me a hard-on.
i’ll pay prem np

The SFV forum is fucking important to millions of us out there.

If we can get this board archived that would be enough as far as board features

But the new board would have to be as lenient as this board

Discord is cool, but you can’t really search for the info you need

The best part of srkgd as a community is that we can shit on each other and it literally is the best part because it is about the laughs and putting smiles on faces of people getting shit on. Even if i am getting shit on that is the best part. That there is an understanding that you post dumb shit you will get wrecked.

Reddit does not allow this

4chan is a racist altright anon site so the shit talk is not personal and it gets weird and murdery

Broke ass community tbh.

Still have a month, take your time to set the right thing up.

fwiw: The New Old Rep System

I think we shoot for 15k goals but get the forums to run on less than 15, and save the excess encase of shit happening that there be a savings for when it’s needed.

Guys, I think we should move full throttle ahead with a new forum to succeed this one. After recent tweets by Tom Cannon, I honestly don’t think his heart is in it anymore. That’s fine. I’m supremely grateful for the Cannons and the Administration for what they have done for us, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Ideally we should migrate data from this to wherever we end up next and we have the same user options give or take.

PM me, I am willing to financially back this* as much as I can to ensure we have a new online home after this era is over.

*Provided we are guaranteed to have an SF forum.

It’s already in the works, just gotta be patient and see what Bchan, Ranma, and the rest affiliated cook up. And whatever the end result is, I wouldn’t worry about the scale of support for the project; this isn’t some average, ordinary forum/community.

I genuinely look forward to our new home.

Vanilla theme creation is a little bit of a pain…making my own template from scratch.

Nowhere near done but it’s a start. So tired…
