Also, just got back from KC. Was a pretty good tournament, I got eliminated from both Marvel and AE fairly early on, but I did manage to knock Focra (KC area Zangief player, and one of their better players) into Losers, and I got some pretty good casual matches in against Sanford Kelly in AE against his Yang (who had some REALLY good stuff going with Yang’s Super that I had never seen before). Was fun stuff, and props to Sang for getting the hotel and everything setup.
Also, it’s too bad you and Mouse couldn’t make it up, Markus. The BBCS2 tournament was a bust due to a lack of people, and I think having you two up there would’ve given them enough people to run it. But that’s alright, the next KC event you guys are able to make it to should pretty much be the same group of people, so that’ll be good. And even if it is a bust then, the guys are always up for casuals (I played some good casual matches in against DatBoiSTL’s Ragna, who’s got some crazy good rushdown) pretty much the whole time as long as a setup is open.
Oh also, I might not be there this Monday night. I’ll just have to see how I’m feeling. 2 straight days of tournament is weary, and I could use a break. But if I’m feeling up to it, I’ll head up. We’ll see. Pretty wiped at this moment though.
Hey guys. Registration is open for Fighter X Shooter in Chicago on Sept 2-4. We are featuring top 8 payouts with bonus money in SSF4AE, MvC3, and MK9. We also have tournaments for 3rd Strike Online Edition, arcade ST, and arcade Vampire Savior. Friday Sept 2nd is all special events, so if you can only make it Sat/Sun, you won’t miss any of the tournament itself. We’ll also have a metric ton of giveaways (sticks, headsets, etc) that anyone can win! Please spread the word, get your travel group together, and rep your area at this regional event. Tek7, you should play this weekend. Even if you feel confident in you character, the tourney jitters would still be new to you. You wont be comfortable with them right away, and you cant get use to them playing casuals. Pretty much anyone will way to at least try one tourney, just for the experience, and thats why. Im not sure we’ll have a station for casuals, unless we only play 2 games. If we have one extra, we’ll set it up.
If not this time, next month. You dont see it on the spectator side, but its a different game.
I can vouch for this heavily. As you know, I’ve played Guy for ages, literally since Super came out, and I’m more comfortable with him than any character in any fighter I’ve ever played. Then, last months tournament rolls around, and I was dropping links and missing opportunities that I NEVER would in a casual setting. And that wasn’t even my first tournament
The sooner you get tourney jitters out of your system, the better. The pressure will also make you better in the long run.
Ironically, I’m not going to be able to play the tourney; we’re on mandatory weekend overtime and I won’t be off in time to make the start time. I still want to come congratulate the winners though! I’ll be by around 3, might even sneak in a game or two if any casuals are going on.
I’d love to play in tournaments eventually, but I’m not yet signing up for SSFIVAE tourneys because (1) money’s tight right now since I’m unemployed (not counting my job as a full-time stay-at-home dad), (2) I’m a thrifty dude ($10 = 3 Steam games), and (3) I don’t feel like I’m anywhere near ready for competitive play yet. If I had a job and if I thought I had a snowball’s chance in a furnace of placing (or even winning one match), I’d be much more likely to enter.
For me, fighting games are more about the social experience than competition. I associate games like Street Fighter II and Soulcalibur II with fond memories of playing casual matches with friends. Before choosing Chun Li as my main and deciding to learn the mechanics of the game in detail, I played casually. I still consider myself a casual player, but I’d like to get to a point where I can keep up with the regulars at Next-Level. I can’t afford the time to practice often enough to place in or win a SSFIVAE tournament, but I’d like to become a stronger opponent. SSFIVAE is a great game, but there are just too many great games and not enough time to play them all. I’ll never master SSFIVAE, but I certainly do want to improve.
Also, I will post about next month’s event later this week. So far, we will be running 4 main games, 3 mid games, and 1 random. We plan to run this on the 24th of September.
Main Games ($10 reg): SSF4:AE MVC3 BBCS2 MK9 (If we get enough people)
Mid Tier Games ($5 reg): Puzzle Fighter II HD Remix Arcana Hearts 3 Power Stone 2
Random ($1 reg):
Whatever the game store owner picks out, so we won’t know until we start.
YESSS. Looking forward to some Puzzle Fighter casual matches next week and the tournament on Sept. 24.
eVile: I’m assuming Akuma, Devilot, and Power Sakura will not be allowed in the Puzzle Fighter tournament?
And remember: Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is on sale for $5 on PSN until Tuesday, August 23. I bought it for $10 the day I got my PS3 and I have most definitely gotten my money’s worth since last October.
GGs to everyone at Next-Level today. I really enjoyed watching the tournament matches (even if I did get distracted by the opportunity to play Puzzle Fighter during the SSFIVAE Grand Finals) and playing X-Men: Children of the Atom on the Saturn was much more fun than expected. After today, I’m planning to participate in any future “mystery game” tournaments (with hopes that Tatsunoko vs. Capcom will eventually be selected).
If any of the local SSFIV or Puzzle Fighter players who own a PS3 are interested in a bit of online sparring, be sure to add me to your PSN friends list; my PSN ID is gummyzergling.
Protip: Hold the LB (left bumper) and RB (right bumper) buttons on the Xbox 360 controller or L1 and R1 on the PS3 controller while selecting Morrigan, Donovan, or Hsien Ko for a surprise.
You play TvC Tek7? I may have to dust off my Wii and bring it up sometime if you want to get some games in. I abandoned the tourney scene for it long ago, but the game is still fun to play.
The wife is doing okay now. Just a smaller relapse of the hospital incident a few days ago, but it left her unable to care for our son. I am truly sorry for having to leave on such short notice, especially in the middle of a match.
