I don’t think Viper can do much about that. She has nothing to catch SJ/Flight and shit like that. I wouldn’t force this matchup and just tag in someone else if possible, like Taskmaster.
This is one of the reasons I’m considering switching Cold Star for Jam Session when going up against Trish, Storm and whoever the fuck spends more time in the air than on the ground. JS still gives you lockdown/unblockable setups, but also covers the SJ/Flight area.
It boils down to your seismo game. The dive kick is pretty easy to bait, and you can see it coming most of the time. If you can time your seismos to hit her out of it, or even absorb the attack with focus and cancel into EX seismo, and then punish her big time from there. Viper doesn’t really have an answer for characters who stay in the air, but they have to come back down at some point, and when they do, you have to prepare to pressure them as they fall back down.
That’s the initial strategy I had with Trish but once they catch on they don’t have to come back down at all they can be completely content with zoning and setting up traps in the air with assists to cover them. Dante Jam Session would end up eating the ground trap instead of hitting Trish as I’ve tried that strategy before. I’ve tried the patience game as well with just super jumping and BK feinting and it boils down to who cracks first and goes on the offensive or who created an opening. In all of those cases Trish is usually at the advantage. Smart Trish players would be content with just staying in the air as there’s no incentive for them to rush down based on the match up.
Really bad match-up for Viper really. Not much you can do. I’ve played my friend often and he loves using Trish. It just comes down to patience and hoping you can catch them not placing a trap in the right place or baiting a divekick for EX seismo. I’ve tried light seismo on a bait and it usually gets snuffed with that dive kick. EX seismo also gives you a free combo on hit.
Not sure if this will work because im just thinking about it but…
I wonder if you could try going in on trish’ way down using an assist and ex seismo in theory it should kill what traps are near the ground and keep both viper and assist safe right? Assist could give a temporary lockdown if they block. If trish doesn’t get blocked she pops in the air and its combo city from there.
EX Seismo and EX TK are both great in getting Viper in from almost any situation if she’s being zoned out or pressured. Even on block, if you have an assist that can cover your advance with EX TK, Viper still has the advantage to play some mixups. But once she’s in, you have to take advantage of it and open her up before Trish is able to get away again, otherwise you’re back to square one and you just wasted a meter. A lot of Viper’s game IMO is to make most of the situation when you have that one chance, she doesn’t really have a lot of spamming strategies except for seismo cancels, but she’s got lots of ways to get in.
For characters that love to throw down stuff from the air like Trish and Morrigan, I wonder how well her heavy TK version will work? If it can out-prioritize the dive kick, I think it can beat a lot of Trish’s options in the air, since the TK will go through her projectiles and traps as well. The only thing is, I don’ t know is if you can combo out of it.
If they are at a much higher height, then I would probably try super-jumping and surprise them with an air grab.
H TK loses to dive kick already tried that, even the assist version of H TK loses. You can only combo after H TK if you feint on hit and the feint only works if you are really low to the ground. If you hit the person and Viper’s off the ground you’re too late to feint after wards and by the time you land the opponent will have air teched already.
Yeah, I figured as much. =
Not much else I can think of. Just hope you can open her up with an EX seismo or with your assists, and try to kill her with one combo since she doesn’t have a lot of health. Much easier said than done though… Trish really is a pain to deal with for most characters, Viper included.
I just counter pick with Doom Hidden Missiles assist… because personally I can’t find much of a way around it either.
I would prefer to just tag in another character. I don’t see the point of even trying to play a retarded matchup in a game where you have the choice of playing two different ones. If your opp plays trish on point, hold down an assist button before the match starts. ^^ if it happens during the actual match that you have to face trish with viper, just simply raw tag while she is high up in the air. She will barely be able to punish you for that. Honestly, i am not trying to play the matchup at all when i face a good trish with viper if i am backed up by ammy, dante, task or whatever.
L Seismo is better anti air than H thunder knuckle anyways. A Trish who’s always in flight mode does not have a good way to make Viper block something, her projectiles are too telegraphed and the traps can be dealt with as long as Viper is patient and knows her options. It takes 1 hit to kill Trish, and as long as you’re patient and understand what’s acceptable chip to take and unacceptable it’s okay. Once you’re inside to the point where Viper’s normals aren’t an issue you win.
As for H thunder knuckle, that’s only partially correct Killey, at any point in its animation connected or otherwise Viper can cancel into EX burning kick and we all know how to combo after that, it’s often a waste of gauge, but if you actually have a situation where you’re using an H thunder knuckle that’s not feinted it may be worth it.
According to the Brady games bible (and I really don’t know shit about frame data) Trish’s divekick starts up in 13, with 7 for recovery, and her courching and standing blockstring all ending in C end in -3, -4 if she ends in B or S. Viper’s fastest normal is c.A which starts in 4. s. A (which hits low) starts in 5.
Only thing I’ve found to work for me against Trish is when she does the blockstring, I will either advancing guard and do a wavedash/ B Seismo feint> throw or j. throw, or neglect the advancing guard and c. AB into C Burning kick, which is an overhead, and can crossup at certain distances.
The matchup is stupidly in Viper’s favor on the ground because apart from low hopscotch Viper’s EX moves shut down all her traps, and Trish has shitty normals. I guess it is just a matter of getting that hit and being patient enough for them to come in with the divekick because unless they just mash hitconfirms in A, you should see a chance to get a swing in even if its destined to be blocked.
Though her eight way dash and burn kick might be the untapped gem in this case, it is like nine times more effective to counter pick and call it a day cause I dislike that shit. There are options, but it feels like fighting Dhalsim with Honda, if I had to compare it to SF4.
Trish’s normals are fairly decent when Viper isn’t inside, but I seriously don’t see this match as that lopsided against Viper, when Trish comes back down to normal jump height she gets to a distinctly bad place to be with her options. I actually don’t like EX thunder knuckle against Trish much with the ability to cancel into Sparda on the ground and lack of high voltage spam. Some things that really help in my opinion is focusing on where you want her to be. If she gets near the corner her options dramatically decrease as when there’s no horizontal range outside of seismo everything gets more difficult, depending on your team you can unblockable falling Trish with seismo set ups and Ammy/Dante etc. I’d be very cautious to use assists like Dante however thanks to hopscotch. Despite Viper’s ground dominance I feel this is a match where her ground dashing is very risky thanks to all of Trish’s tools, knowing the heights at which it’s safe to pass through hopscotch is very important. Remember your tools to deal with peekabo, any time you have a chance to remove one with seismo things will be much easier especially if you can rapid fire.
What do you guys think of using super skrull with viper. i changed my team again and am currently using c. viper (seismo)/tron (gustaff fire)/ super-skrull (tenderizor).
i was still debating between super-skrull and amaterasu but i kinda like super skrull better because the tendorizor holds them down for a bit longer than cold star.
Most characters can duck out of Tenderizer for the majority of the hits, if you want something to hold in place that’s only if they’re low in the air/falling in or very tall when crouching. Otherwise that’s all looking good!
Thats true i probably cant use super-skrull when they are crouching but i can use tron and then bk. but kool thanks for the feedback. i wasnt sure if this would work well because both super-skrull and viper require alota meter but tron and viper build meter really fast
I’m not very good so I maybe way off with this
but couldn’t tenderiser then just work as a pseudo unblockable in a sense?
either they stand and block it which keeps them locked down which is what you originally wanted anyways
or
they crouch it which means they won’t stand, in turn can’t you just do isjf bk feint which would result in a overhead ?
couldn’t that be effective?
It depends on what tools they have, a lot of people can poke Skrull out of it if they start crouching and with how bad Viper’s normals are that makes it risky, but since the ISJF BK feint is so fast that may actually work out depending on how fast they can cancel into another move that would under normal circumstances beat Viper.
Thats a good idea ill definetly try that. Since psn is down i gotta wait till firday when i usually go to casuals around here to try that out. but yea i also found a couple other things like after using vipers burst time and then dhc into inferno. afterwards you can go for an heavy elastic slam reset and combo.
Im working with a new team and its looking nice!! Viper(Seismic Gunner)Hulk(Gamma Charge Up)Iron man(Unibeam).
i got some combos with hulk and viper. iron man unibeam is like a hit confirm cause is doesn’t knock down i believe. They team super good together viper picks them up with burst time and hulk rocks just smash them. im having a lot of fun just doing team super after a hard knock down. my ironman is still doodoo i gotta work with him.
Good Matches for Kbeast and Chrisses. I saw those matches on the stream. good job reping viper. also not sure if anyone mentioned this but i think there might be another way to get an unblockable setup with viper and trish. If you dhc from vipers burst time to trish’s bommerang super it combos. so i was thinking while that hits the opponent can u switch back to viper and charge a lvl 3 focus attack to create an unblockable reset
