Southwest Tournaments/Events Schedule and Organizer Discussion Thread (Updated 01/02)

Just a heads up, I may be moving the San Antonio January event from Jan 8th to the 15th!

May decide to work with Gamelot again, just going to cut out Smash (I’m sure no one hear would miss it) because the owner hates the Smash community with a passion (the Street Fighter community is older and better behaved after all).

Could you add this to the calendar?

Please update front page. Thx =]

Revolucion 2011 is being pushed back to either February 19th or February 26th to capitalize on the release of Marvel vs Capcom 3. We want to be the first city in Texas to have a tournament for the game. The venue is currently being decided, but we likely will be going with the same room we used for Turkey Throwdown at St Philip’s Community College.

Texas Bar Fights Round II will happen on Saturday, January 15th!! Bigger and Better than ever.

Hey Demon Jim, anyways you can reserve a slot for me on the first Saturday of Feburary (Feb 5th)?

That’s when the next Arcade UFO event should be around.
More details soon…

Not to jump on anyone’s back, but that’s a lot of tourney’s. I can really see the DFW tourney scene is going to die off if you run all these dates. People aren’t going to take it serious since you’ve just essentially made a RanBat with money involved. I’d much rather support the tourney ran by nmbr1krush and other tourney’s then your tourneys. Like I said, not trying to be a jerk, but the way the dates are put in, I don’t think that it’s very fair to everyone else (as far as other cities), we should have some kind of rule on date reserving, like one at a time or something.

We should have a break time in between tourneys, otherwise you’re going to lose all the hype. And are you 100% you can deliver on ALL these tourneys? If you want to play this game, I think we all should be able to just get ANY date we want. And if that’s the case then I want to reserve:

April, May, and July.

Not to jump on your back or anything but we are desperately trying to grow the scene up here in DFW.

First a little history:
We have been running a weekly gathering for over a year and some months. In this time we have had as many as 50 people here at one time for a gatherings alone. At this gathering we have had small tournaments, ranking battles, etc.

My partner and I have spent thousands of dollars buying consoles, desks, stools, tvs, monitors, sticks, and copies of the all the fighting games we all play. We even passed out flyers to more than 20 local gamestops before SSF4 came out. We have worked very hard and really put our money where our mouths are when it comes to supporting and promoting our little scene.

We have been running bigger tournaments such as Texas Bar Fights as well. It has also taken time and effort to foster a good working relationship with the bar that we are hosting these events for everyone at. Many people who have come to our tournaments say that they are some of the best run tournaments they have ever been to. Not only that but people are requesting MORE TOURNAMENTS for DFW.

This is why we have decided to do more events. That and we are trying to find a model for building our scene that is “like” the California scene but will still be true to the great scene we have in DFW. Alex Valle says that many events is what keeps the scene thriving. If you only have one or two tournaments a year, then you are running on life support. Honestly, we need MORE events–after all, the players are asking for it.

I also notice that you are not attacking AirBrushKing for running his monthly tournaments in Houston. Why are you just singling us out???

Really, there is a tournament SOMEWHERE in the Texas/surrounding areas (Houston, SA, Austin, DFW, La, NM, OK) EVERY WEEKEND so its hard to understand what your problem is. We are using what 5 whole weekends out of 52??? For a city that probably has the LEAST amount of tournaments out of the ones mentioned?

Sorry we just want our scene to grow and thrive. We don’t do that by just having people sit at home. We do that by building hype and building our scene as best we can. We are happy to see you doing your part to help build the scene (and thanks! we need more ppl like you!) but relax…there is plenty of pie to go around.

Kent has a point. Tony, Jon, and himself have been working hard lately to build the scene up there. I’ve seen their efforts from visiting up there several times since it all started and they have been consistent on delivering results. As for Deangelo, it’s all based on what the other Smash Brother tournament organizers are doing since they set up the venue and let Deangelo have his own little space on the side. I trust the efforts that the DFW scene has put in so forth, so there shouldn’t be any reason as to why they can’t have those dates if they have been bringing in results so far. It’s just a matter of delivering in the end.

I’m sure you guys have a lot of effort put into the tourney’s, and I can’t say much since we’re throwing our first big tourney. I don’t know what people say about your tournaments, but so long as they are really good and people enjoy them is what matters the most.

I didn’t mean to single you guys out, it just seemed kinda unfair that you guys reserved so many spots at once

I just worried about the quality of events that they are throwing. I was wondering if it was really too much for a group of people to handle. I dont’ have any hard feelings, but I like to be blunt and say how I feel about certain things. I have faith in Jon/nmbr1krush and Tony Wu cause I’ve been to their tourneys and have definitely enjoy them.

I just dont’ think it’s fair since there are other tourney directors in the area. If anything I think people should be able to reserve two dates at the most.

I mean did you even bother asking some of the other tourney directors in the area? That’s only common courtesy. We try to support other communities in Texas, and we’d like to support you too, but my only concern is just fairness among the community of Directors.

And it seems to me you are upset, I wasn’t trying to make enemies with anyone, just putting my .02 out there. We all need to support one another and that’s the most important part.

Heck, I’d most definitely come up to Dallas for the bar fights if I could, and I care about the community as much as you do, I don’t do it for the money, we do it to make things fun, and to keep our community alive. It’s just hard to see a community thrive if there isn’t fairness involved

Kent and Jeff have been putting in an amazing amount of time and effort into their events, and I can definitely vouch for the “quality” said events. The most recent Bar Fights was run very smoothly, and unlike other tournaments I’ve been to, I found myself playing much more often than wondering when my next match was gonna be. From their first tourney I can tell that they’ve learned a lot from Jon and Tony, and I’m 100% positive that each event will only get better. DFW doesn’t have many big events aside from AB, but that’s only once a year.

However, I can understand where you’re coming from, and your concerns are definitely valid. Kent and Jeff do everything they do to help the the DFW FGC grow, and I’m sure they didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes. I’m not positive if the dates that were posted are set in stone, but it’s nothing a little negotiation won’t fix. I’m sure the TOs from Texas will be happy to oblige.

You live and learn right?

100% false. I grew up with the owner of funplex. I met him through marvel so when planet zero started acting shady, i spoke to him about bringing hobos and tys to funplex and he said no problem. For the record, I am the 1 who talks to the venue owners and make stuff happen just like I did for our bar fight weekly’s. Xyro/Hobo/smash organizer has nothing to do with behind the scenes as far as talking to sponsors and actually getting venues. I do all the talking. When devry university sponsored my tournament, they called funplex asking for airbrushking and how we can get in contact with him. Point im trying to make is dont assume things before actually knowing the truth on whats going on and 1 more thing. Me and xyro always get 100+ because he always has 50+ players on his side and tys always gets 50+ players so I want to be clear so people just dont think its all about the smash numbers that make my attendance. We are 50/50 now thats why we have 2 separate rooms. Now that I have the bar/lounge as a new venue, I will be doing a tys bar fights tournament soon. Will post the date/schedule soon.

Don’t go lecturing to me about that, go lecture to them. Time after time they tell me stories and put you as the dunce. That’s none of my concern but from what they said they did the work for the Funplex venue. I’m just saying it as I see it.

lol if you want to know the truth, just ask the smash players and xyro this sat if your coming and they will gladly tell you whats real. See you soon chester…
