Not to jump on your back or anything but we are desperately trying to grow the scene up here in DFW.
First a little history:
We have been running a weekly gathering for over a year and some months. In this time we have had as many as 50 people here at one time for a gatherings alone. At this gathering we have had small tournaments, ranking battles, etc.
My partner and I have spent thousands of dollars buying consoles, desks, stools, tvs, monitors, sticks, and copies of the all the fighting games we all play. We even passed out flyers to more than 20 local gamestops before SSF4 came out. We have worked very hard and really put our money where our mouths are when it comes to supporting and promoting our little scene.
We have been running bigger tournaments such as Texas Bar Fights as well. It has also taken time and effort to foster a good working relationship with the bar that we are hosting these events for everyone at. Many people who have come to our tournaments say that they are some of the best run tournaments they have ever been to. Not only that but people are requesting MORE TOURNAMENTS for DFW.
This is why we have decided to do more events. That and we are trying to find a model for building our scene that is “like” the California scene but will still be true to the great scene we have in DFW. Alex Valle says that many events is what keeps the scene thriving. If you only have one or two tournaments a year, then you are running on life support. Honestly, we need MORE events–after all, the players are asking for it.
I also notice that you are not attacking AirBrushKing for running his monthly tournaments in Houston. Why are you just singling us out???
Really, there is a tournament SOMEWHERE in the Texas/surrounding areas (Houston, SA, Austin, DFW, La, NM, OK) EVERY WEEKEND so its hard to understand what your problem is. We are using what 5 whole weekends out of 52??? For a city that probably has the LEAST amount of tournaments out of the ones mentioned?
Sorry we just want our scene to grow and thrive. We don’t do that by just having people sit at home. We do that by building hype and building our scene as best we can. We are happy to see you doing your part to help build the scene (and thanks! we need more ppl like you!) but relax…there is plenty of pie to go around.
