Soul Calibur V coming? (aka: My Japanese sucks)

It’s not our job to worry about developer satisfaction. I don’t care if the chef at IHOP is tired of making fuckin’ pancakes. That’s what happened. In SC1 Namco made a pretty tasty pancake. They made the pancake even better in 2. In 3 they added bananas to the pancake even though we just wanted a better regular pancake. In 4 they gave us crepes or some kind of waffle and they effectively said “hey it’s made outta pancake batter what the fuck more do you want???”. FUCK THAT WE WANT PANCAKES!!!

Don’t forget that 4 came with three side items that were served on the same plate, but if you ate more than two of the sides then it would cost you an extra $5 .

And at least one of those sides gave you the molten shits for a week.

I love analogies of this sort.

What I wanna know is, where are they gonna go with they story? Wasn’t Algol the end-all, be-all boss, creator of the Soul Calibur and master of both swords?

SC story

[details=Spoiler]SC1 ends with Xianghua and Kilik fighting and defeating Nightmare then losing the Soul Calibur in the void of Soul Edge.

SC2 ends Raphael fighting Nightmare. Just before he loses, Raphel stabs Soul Edge in the eye. This allows for the Soul Calibur to be released and Siegfried to regain control of his body. Then Siegfried pierces Soul Edge with Soul Calibur which seal both swords power and creates the Soul Embrace.

SC3 ends with Siegfried and Nightmare fighting each other in the Lost Cathedral. Soul Edge was released from it’s slumber by Zasalamel. In turn Soul Calibur regained it’s power. Nightmare and Siegfried took their respective swords and fought. The fight opened a rift in space and warped Nightmare to Ostrheinsburg where all the Soul Edge fragments around the world came to him and fused. He now waits fo the Soul Calibur to come so he can destroy it once and for all.

Algol somehow must of defeated both Seigfried and Nightmare since he ends up being the last boss.[/details]

To me, I think they’ve kinda hit a wall, but I’m sure they’ll think of something. Also, the gameplay better be good as well.

They could always just wedge the story for V in between II and III or something.

Start fresh and kill off Nightmare and Siegfried. Give Cervantes Soul Edge back

Whenever storylines start to hit an obvious climax/wall, that’s all the more reason to start anew, or at least go on another tangent altogether.

For example, the likes of KOF has done a lot to go to other avenues beyond the original plotline revolving around the history of the Kusanagi and Yagami clans, as well as the whole Orochi Bloodline thing. It’s all still there in the background, and Kyo and Iori are definitely not going any where, but they’re not nearly as important any more in the grand scheme of things. And through that, we’ve even got new characters who took rightful places alongside classics like Ryo, Terry, Kyo and Iori.

The Soul series could definitely stand to do likewise. Keep the swords around, but their plotline has basically done plenty to run its course. I’m sure with a world setting dealing with gods, demons, magic and the encroaching era of guns fast approaching, there’s plenty of fodder to tell more stories beyond “OH SNAP IT’S THE EVIL SWORD(S) AGAIN! ARE YOU A BAD ENOUGH SOUL TO STOP THEM!?”.

I wonder how a Soul Calibur based in the 21st century would look?
Actually, Sega just need to make a new Last Bronx game.

THE ORIGINAL BOSS IS BACK BITCHES!!!

Storyline wise they could just pull a SF4.

Which is to say make completely and utterly popsterus retcons that even the most dedicated of fanboys would be hardpressed to believe. So uh, Akuma kills Gouken Before SF1. He just “slept” this whole time and no-one noticed. So, uh we don’t bury people now? Bison has his soul sent to hell. Oh, but he’s Bison so he’s get another freebie when it comes to getting revived. No explanation. Rose, was pretty much killed and had her body taken over. So, uh she’s alive because she was left on the street and Bison thought it would be funny somehow. Bah, there’s so many other things I could pick and tear apart but it doesn’t deserve even that. Not to mention Ryu was done with dark hadou during Alpha and hence Akuma stop caring about him and started hanging out with Oro, mountions and underwater ships.

If the storyline people are anything like Ono there is no hope for anymore coherent storylines. Bet it.

Well, honestly, can it get much worse than what they’ve been doing already?

“Cervantes FINALLY sucked out Ivy’s SOUL, making him even more powerful than ever! …But Ivy is okay, she had a ‘spare’ soul that she happened to have ready for use from her little science project!”

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Pretty much the only “down-to-Earth” storyline that exists in the series is the one relating to Setsuka, and that much is because she doesn’t care about the mystical swords and just wants to kill Mitsurugi. Meanwhile, such plotlines relating to how Lizardman wanted to try and strike back against the Gods, and Li Long (BRING HIM BACK WITH HWANG, DAMMIT!) has a wife and son at home that he’s completely unaware about.

Even from what we have in the series already, there’s a good deal of unresolved stuff that they could look into. But it was always about the damn swords at the center of the plot. It’s almost as bad as the Mishimas in Tekken.

Setsuka all day! JF umbrella’s and jiggling boobies after guard crushing! DO IT NAMCO!

oh and give her a decent low ffs…

I would sign a petition for Setsuka having a decent low. I would also sign a petition for Namco to give Zasalamel his SC3 moveset back and for them to stop having their shits and giggles switcheroos with commands.

As far as story: I think they fucked it up once they decided to keep Nightmare around. They should’ve been bouncing the Soul Edge around like a hot potato. We really need that Mitsurugi with the Soul Edge.+

I decided to play SCIV again, and wow it looks really nice  I’d be okay with them reusing IV’s models/stages for V in fact; Well with a few tweaks here and there to some of the models.

Is there anybody else who’d want the models to look more realistic in V?

I think they could keep the models the same as iv, the graphics were really superb. What they need to do is fix Tira’s bullshit character design. Switching to stance where you constantly take damage for no reason is dumb as fuck.

Not really , unless the dev team is sure they can hit the mark they are aiming for.
I agree with you on the fact that the SCIV graphics would be ok to reuse.
They are pretty good looking.

I thought we were talking about her bullshit Santa’s Little Helper costume from IV. The green costume she has in III = hawtness.

Yeah, going into gloomy state is a risk, personally I think all of Tira’s gloomy moves should be counters…and have guard break properties…and they should all be able to ring out…with an extra 20% damage on top of that.

Graphics should be improved in SCV. They should be at least as good as they are in T6, maybe TTT2.

SCIV Tira’s design> SCIII Tira’s design
:EDIT:
I thought SCIV looked better than Tekken 6

Honestly, it took a while for Tira’s new look to catch on. Part of why I picked her up in III was because of her crazy costume and colors, as well as her unique fighting style. So when I saw Tira in that Christmas costume for the first time, I was a bit disappointed. But when IV dropped, I still played her more than anyone else on the roster.

SCIV graphics are at least two times better than Tekken 6’s. That’s not even debatable.
Tekken 6 has awful anti-alising and crap stage graphics. The texturing is alot worse aswell.
