I think it likely won’t be that big a deal in the long run. ST has random damage and no one really cares about that. I can understand the reasoning (subtly hinting non-knowledgeable players to use these moves) but I’d rather it not be there. When I first heard the term I thought it was referring to a mechanic that was already in the game since SC3. Where certain moves do different things at different ranges.
The notifications are lagging behind a bit. The clean hit is the sword stab right after the low kick. Mitsu’s lifebar flashes white when he hits Tira with the clean hit.
New Build and Viola’s P2 Costume

Some themes
I don’t see Viola’s p2 costume or the build in that link :(.
Well it just seems that the vid on their site won’t load for me is all. Anyone got a youtube link, or better yet let me know when someone puts in up on YT thanks.
I couldn’t really make out what Viola’s costume was. She looks a traveling fortune teller? Was that a scarf she was wearing? If so, reminds me even more of Rose.
It beats you over the head with “fortune teller”.
Also, the dress was broken off
Oh my
So only 7 slots left, maybe more if the center one turns into the Boss/DLC/Bonus slot
God, both Namco and Kotaku sucked in that video. No probing or real game exposure at all.
Also to simplify what I meant, a clean hit in Namco’s case just means you hit someone REALLY REALLY close relatively to an attack’s range, and cause more damage or a special property.
Notice how the stab passes her, so lunges without stab property will really benefit in this game.
Also she wasa fortune teller to begin with, the only real aesthetic difference is that there’s no hood and the circlet makes her hair look poofy.
Soul Calibur 5
Here is some coverage, we did at NEC 2011. We got a full walk-through and a shakedown.

Story mode sounds long
As does Arcade Mode
Kinda forced to play Ezio at least a day, but other than that, seems perfectly doable.
WAY too many Online achievements -_- (I don’t usually play fighters online)
Looks good otherwise I wonder if they are tied to armor unlocks again?
I don’t know if this was already common knowledge, but one of the achievements lists uploading a replay. If this is the case for both online and offline mode, that is a great addition to the game.
Oh. Well, how about that. Wow, it seems like random damage ala SF2. So far, it seems like only certain moves have the “clean hit” property. Now, that’s something I don’t mind too much. The fact that it’s random does bother me a little bit, but it seems that the dev team’s reason for that is that the clean hitting moves are the ones that you as a player really want to use; your “B&B”, if you will. That’s a good reason, but I prefer the mechanic working in a counter-hit kind of way, where the move properties change upon gaining a clean hit, but that’s just me. Again, this probably won’t mean much in the long run now that the philosophy is out in the open. For now, I’m satisfied.
I hope this is uploading to Youtube and not to the game server.
YT Replay upload is a godlike feature that should be in every existing fighting game.
" Lively Pub
Change the BGM in options."
The ability to play classic Soul tunes in SCV, maybe?
Hearing this tune during character select would make my pants tighten.
eventhough soul calibur is one of my fav fighting games, it’s very easy to get bored fighting the same person in Soul, random damage ala sf2 is excellent imo
well done Daishi, random damage is one of the secret reasons why sf2 has that replayablity factor
Yeah, that’s a great song.
Though personally I’m hoping some Soul Edge/Blade songs return in remix form…
Like Future Dancin’ and Gears of Madness
For the past few years I had to listen constantly about how the online sucked in SC4, now people are complaining about online achievements in SC5. People on the internet will never be happy.
As for clean hit, I like it. Most people didn’t even notice that it was in the game until I recorded that interview last week. I hope Namco comes back so I can record another one.
And that list of achievements has me really excited about the game. I can’t wait.
Thanks for pointing it out, now we all know about this unwanted feature.
Randomness is common in fighting games. Some randomness is also good since it adds tension.
Don’t see why people are getting their knickers in a bunch over this.
I’m totally fine with clean hit.
It’s Tiras random I don’t like, because I enjoyed playing her in 3. But in IV, the mood thing was just confusing. I dunno, I like the idea of her being a bit random because she’s a trickster and it would be hype to see good Tira players that adapt and stuff… But I don’t think I’m up to the task of maining such a character myself
Good thing there’s a lot of other fun characters
