Are we talking like 100% off simple shit or just long stuff?
So? The projectiles were what drew me to him in the first place. Did they totally shut down a large portion of hte cast?
I was told his bubbles can obstruct the game’s view, one of the many reasons for his ban.
I never used him but I loved the fact he had projectiles. but when he started juggling with them
Algol had something that’s never been in previous SC games before: Viable projectiles (Extremely good at that). If he could get some breathing space then he can put up to three slow-moving bubbles (Which can be GId to be reflected, but he’s still able to move) . Some characters had zero real answers, but honestly the vast majority that really lost to him were shitty anyways. That and the fact that he had VERY situational stage based infinites and infinites on Sieg + Nightmare are the reasons in the US (Had to be done off of a mediocre move though). In France they just said “Boss character that doesn’t fit in, BAN” and it was done lol. Personally his ban is the one I disagree with the most, but it’s all old hat now.
one of my friends used to love using him, to be honest he was like low-medium tier really. but he seemed to be a symbol of slow calibur 4 I don’t like the character but the fact he has projectiles is very interesting, wonder if there will be another character with projectiles??
I recently played it at a friends house, the game really is kind of bare bones, Im surprised I stayed dedicated to standard calibur for so long. hopefully custom has improved exponentially because im looking to have fun with the next one :wonder:
Yeah they just made it guard crush instead. Definitely removed instead of just revamped.
In any case, most people don’t know the real reason why Hilde is “broken”.
The real reason is the broken way in which button binds are handled in the game. The game allows you to hold a charge by holding a binded A or B button. Here is the broken part. It also allows you to interrupt a charge with a normal move just by pressing another binded A or B button. That may or may not sound broken at first. After all the charge is reset once you do this. But think about it. If this were an arcade with 4 buttons like the game was likely designed to be played on. Doing this is naturally impossible. To perform an A attack while you’re holding down the A button you’d have to press G, release A and then you’re free to use that A attack. It’s essentially the equivalent of a walking forward sonic boom or flash kick. Holding a charge is supposed to limit your options. Moreover, this caused her to be extremely vulnerable to throws. Especially command throws. If she’s holding a charge she has to see the grab, release the button in question and then quickly press that same button again. When some throws have windows under 6 frames to break, it’s pretty much impossible to do this while holding a charge. The broken way in which the button binds were implemented circumvented what seems to me like an obvious weakness designed into the character.
Of course. Banning binds is pretty much unenforceable and pad players all over would be shitting their pants. And that resulted in the clusterfuck of today.
**Granted ** she would still have been top tier. Smart players who play her “the way she was meant to be played” know how to mask what buttons they’re charging and her tools are all extremely good. Especially with Doom combo. But she wouldn’t be nearly as overpowered (and broken) as she is now.
Any word if they addressed that issue with the binds?
I made a thread on 8wr about it.
I trust Idlemind but it would be good to hear it from Daishi himself. And now that I think about it he has given hints that such a problem has been fixed. (Like saying that mashing on a bunch of guard buttons won’t get you a just guard.)
Even without binds, Hilde is still broke.
Early on, the discussion about bans was a hot mess. Algol got banned early on and was later clubbed in with the debate about Hilde. Then when Hilde became legal again, Algol was also allowed. Then once EVO added SC and we started doing regional qualifiers in the beginning of 2009, it was too late to change the rules, so the discussion was revisited after those two tournaments were over.
After EVO/Nats, the only regions that had active tournament scenes were the East Coast and France. So when the discussion was revisited, it took no more than 5 minutes to vote in favor for a ban because at that point, something needed to be done to keep the players we had left playing the game. Without that ban, we wouldn’t have lasted an additional 2 years playing the game competitively, and may not even be here talking about SC5.
In hindsight, it’s easy to say what should have been done, but at the time there wasn’t a clear consensus. Plus the people who keep the community going are still around, our top players are still playing, and there’s alot of excitement for SC5. I can’t wait to find out what new details are going to be revealed at TGS and to find out what players have to say from the playable demos in the next couple of weeks.
ok im trying to find the marketing logic behind this twitter… nope can’t find it :shake:
Every developer wants more time. There are very very few game postmortem I’ve heard where the developer felt 100 percent finished with the game. It’s the curse of computer science.
You want to pant a tree onto your pointing? Grab some paint, paint away, adjust textures and tones as you progress.
You want to add a new feature to your game? Write some code, create some resources, test for hours in case of bugs, recode, test again, redesign the feature, recode, test again, publish.
Now, if you are Notch or Blow, then you can do all of that, either from your passion and lack of investors who want their money back (Blow) or from the massive amount of expendable cash and want to please your fans (Notch).
But I don’t see how anyone isn’t worried that the game is supposed to be released 6 months from now and yet it was non-playable during EVO. Heck they have barely released concrete information on the game.
The builds don’t necessarily mean that’s how far along they are, just what they are allowed to show/talk about at that time.
I didn’t say don’t be worried, we should worry about every game before release no matter how much information or how long the development cycle is.
Plus most of the development time is probably cut down anyway by reusing things from Soul Calibur IV.
I’m not saying I disagree with the ban. I’m saying that at least conceptually she’s not nearly as broken as people think. However the the only way to deal with the thing that made her broke would be to institute a rule that would be unenforceable. And keep in mind that even with the binds. Ivy is arguably still a better character. And it obviously doesn’t help that the US and France are pad warrior strongholds.
That’s the reason why there was never a consensus on what to do with Hilde. Half of the people say she’s broke, another half says she’s beatable. But what wasn’t debatable was her impact on tournament attendance.
You could ban binds, but if you did that, then no one would use Hilde to begin with, so you are better off just banning the character altogether.
EDIT: Astaroth and new character Viola have been added.
Viola? For a second I thought she was Amy or something.
Astaroth looks… greek?
Liking Astaroth’s new look, Viola looks like she has some weird orb thing like Amakusa in SamSho in that Screen shot
