Soul Calibur 5 Official Discussion

I really don’t know what the hell they were doing on this one either. They could have increased his damage, fixed tracking on some of his crucial stuff like 22_88BB, fixed his attacks randomly going through people, but nope. Nerfs that (luckily) don’t really affect his core gameplay. Yay.

How do you Just Guard and what are the benefits? I mean, how many frames within an attack do I have to guard to just guard?

Viola is definitely going to be my main. Her 4A, 1AB, keep those sidesteppers in place. The orb is gimmicky and other than making her block strings safe when placed, I see no real use of. Her Super is kinda crap cause it barely gives her enough time to attack while it is placed and does Zero damage to opponents laying on the ground. I think the orb placement is solely for 44aA+B+K.

It seems like there is a lack of low attacks in Viola’s repertoire. Actually in general, not a lot of characters have low attacks in this game.

How do you perform Cervantes’ instant psycho crusher? I do it as fast as possible ala hurricane kick and have only had it come out herp eh derp fast once.

From 8wayrun:
[]Performed by tapping and releasing :G: within 4 frames but within 1-6 frames of an attack connecting.

[
]Works on everything (including UBs) but throws and initial hits of CEs.

The earliest you can repeat JG is 29 frames after the last time you pressed guard. (credit to noodalls)

The benefits? You gain meter and it shortens your block stun (this depends on the move you JG), so some “safe” moves might become punishable.

I’m not really a Viola expert, but Trace_AFJ has a really nice looking Viola (this is pre-patch gameplay, before her damage got buffed):

Her Super is… versatile. Ceirnian over at 8wayrun gave a few examples how it can be used.

Hmmm, make sure you press the last two buttons (back and B) at the same time, I think that’s what counts, if you get 1B you’re too early, if you get Dread Charge (the slow version) you’re too late.

The best way to do iGDR imo is 214+B+K ~ G

That way, if you slightly mistime it, you get the unblockable cancelled into guard.

It really is just a timing thing, it’s not as hard as a just frame, you’ll get used to pressing 4+B soon enough.

IDK, I found it to be one of his trickier justs (WAY harder than the 3A Just, and about the same difficulty as the 214 K Just.). That being said, practice it for a while and you’ll get it. The hard part is figuring out the right timing. Once you get that, getting it off consistently just requires some practice.

Well, it’s not really a just input, it’s a fastest input, (and only with the 4, you can do 21 as slow as you like) once you have the muscle memory it should be near 100% accuracy. I’m not there yet, but I can at least depend on it in actual games unless I’m using a stick that feels really different.

I can’t really do the 214K just consistently haha, you have to time it as it hits right? I think I’ve used that move like once or twice total in an actual game anyway, I don’t really even know it’s purpose with it’s INSANELY low startup, it doesn’t even really mix up with other dread charge options? Unless you throw out random GDR (not conclusions)

That information is a little bit out of date, as it was found that you certainly can just guard all hits of a CE that aren’t grabs like Ivy’s. Really fast hitting ones like Elysium’s lock you in just guard animation, making it automatically JG the rest of the hits after getting the first one down.

addendum: Elysium is a lot of fun to play. I just might be considering tournaments with her.

all these changes are exactly what I expected AAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

maybe I should make a return and beat down all those people who abused those moves :wonder:

oh Keev and Kayanechan finally left elive, Because they refused to send them to MLG?

Anyone got tips for the Maxi matchup with Alpha(I’ll also head on over to 8WR). Honestly that match is so frustrating. Maxi’s shit looks so ambiguous.

and get beaten by a Cervantes who can still abuse everything :stuck_out_tongue:

nah I’ve played good cervantes players and they havent caused me any trouble, I was actually thinking of picking him up at some point though.

I’m glad I stayed away from the london soul calibur tournaments for this season

I honestly think Cervantes is the best character in the game right now, my opinion of the apology twins has changed somewhat, I still think they are high tier, but very manageable and kind of predictable. With the rest of the really good characters pretty much all being nerfed and Cervy’s slight buffs, I can’t see who can match him now.

aB and iGDR are just too good, aB does a combos worth of damage i11 and with amazing range/hard to punish at anything other than point blank range, iGDR is just lol; if you can pull it out on command, all your combos become about 50%+ and you will stuff opponents very often, it catches most quick steps and ducking. Doesn’t have the greatest priority, but it does counter hit a lot of moves as well.

You can also be gimmick and just land a 44A+B (or 44[A+B]; it’s lol, but even good players get tagged sometimes, it’s not really that slow, you can even reaction avoid/punish some lunge attacks with it) into about 80% life gone meterless.

Oh and if you couldn’t land the 1 frame iGDR off of BT B+K before, now it stuns so much you can mash out 3B for an easy mode combo… hahaha

wow I knew cerv had silly potential but that’s just ridiculous

Maxi is one of those characters you might have to learn in depth if you want to beat him. This is not for the Alpha matchup, but helpful against maxi.

That compatability pack and some parts for creation is up,
game still say it’s not available though.

To be fair I only picked up Cervantes very recently (And even then, it was only because my friend made a Bad Boxart Megaman costume for him XD ), but it seems like a decent, if situational, mixup since you have like 4 options of varying speeds out of 214 and it hits low. Honestly, I always buffer it or the forward dash out of the fastest input 214B, that way if I mess up the fastest timing, it goes into the other just.

And yeah, aB is absolutely ridiculous.

I still want to know why Project Soul decided to buff Cervy of all characters. aB and iGDR take away so many options it’s ridiculous. Why does iGDR have clean hit properties?! This character ruins my day…T_T

Hey guys, just started getting into SC5 (Mainly play 2d fighters) and wanted to see if someone could answer this.

**In general, what is the importance of Vertical Attacks? **I understand that if your opponent is side stepping, you throw out a horizontal attack because a vertical attack would generally miss. But when do you choose to strike with a vertical attack over a horizontal? Only thing I can figure out is that they seem to hit Mid and connect with crouching opponents where as horizontals normally hit High and would whiff someone crouching. But if you char as a decently fast horizontal attack that hits Mid, why would you wanna use vertical attacks?

Sorry if these are retarded questions, I’m just trying to get a grasp on the game mechanics.

Better frames, damage, reach. Varies from move to move of course, but that’s often the case with mid hitting verticals over mid hitting horizontals, especially in this game.
