I’m Curious. Why does almost everyone here demand a Tier List?! Are your character choices going to depend on tiers?! Are people afraid of investing time in a “non-winnable” character?! Or do they just want to know the overall balance of the game?!
I’m really confused, both here and on streams, it seems like everyone won’t touch this game until they see a Solid Tier list. Seems people just don’t want to put the work into their character anymore. They want someone to do all the work for them…
Yeah, that’s what I love about the SC series. It’s less about executing 70-hit combos and almost purely about mind-games. High/low mix-ups, horizontal/vertical mix-ups, okizeme mix-ups and tech traps, A/B throws, ring-out options, etc. Also, throws being difficult to break on reaction unless you’re spamming A or B while guarding (which also prevents you from properly just guarding) gives even characters with bad lows the ability to mind-fuck opponents. Even defensive options like stepping, ducking throws, backsteps, or guard impacting is basically you getting in the head of your opponent and knowing exactly what he’s going to throw out and punishing whiffs.
On the same token, the mind games being played in an SC match don’t generate the same excitement and hype as say MvC3 with their one hit-confirm -> death, or X-Factor comeback mechanics. I think only those who’ve played SC can really appreciate the mind games OmegaDR played in that Grand Finale match that made Hawkeye literally freeze up and unable to play his Natsu game.
After playing a lot with my local community i’m starting to get a great feel about the game, nice mind games and everything feels very tactical from different points, i think i underestimated the changes.
We want to know about tier lists because it helps give us knowledge about match ups, move properties, cancels, and a bunch of other tactics for the characters we play as are fight against.
Does anyone have a weblink to the SCV games from Final Round? Unfortunately I couldn’t watch the live stream.
Still doesnt make sense why people want to ban Devil Jin. How can it matter depending on what size you make Devil Jin. Smaller size = more powerful attacks with less hit box range. Big size = more hit box range and less powerful attacks. It pretty much sacrifices one thing for another. Reminds me of the time when they banned Necrid from SC2 even though he was on all versions of the game. But the arcade elitists chose to ban him just because he wasn’t on the arcade version. Lame.
Pretty sure he was banned for being outright broken.
Some history on banning in SoulCalibur. Also DevilJin’s strength includes really high combo potential so making him “low damage” isn’t really an option.
I dont believe that Necrid was too broke. Why ban something before giving it a chance? In my opinion he was at the same level of Cervantes and Xianghua, 2 of the best characters in SC2. So realistically they should of banned Cervantes and Xianghua as well. That’s why I don’t agree with it.
Pretty sure the story of Necrid’s ban is that he was allowed until some tourney where the guy won the whole thing using like 1-2 moves because of how abusable they were which means he earned his ban.
If you ran tournaments for Soulcalibur, you’d understand the logistical challenges and headaches of trying to incorporate a custom character into a tournament setting.
Necrid was banned for a completely different reason. Custom characters have always been banned in SC tournaments. If there was a standarized DJ character that people could select and not arbitrarily create, he wouldn’t be banned.
Side stuff: Before SCV was released, one of the goals that I had was to make sure that rules were not an issue going in and avoid the problems of the previous games. So far, you can use whoever you want and only custom characters are banned as they’ve always been banned, and now Dampierre is legal as he’s now available to purchase on XBLM/PS Store. Everyone should be happy. Go play.
I still don’t see why they don’t have the “Standard” DJ CaS be a male, whatever the recommended size (According to the game) for DJ is, mostly naked/default clothing CaS. Wouldn’t even take 3 minutes to make after you unlocked him.
Random all clothing can be the Standard. It’s quick and shouldn’t take any longer than 2 minutes. Anyways, I just recently read an article on 8wayrun saying that Devil Jin is allowed for all tournaments except for major tournaments. Which sounds reasonable. Though the reason why I complain about this kind of issue is in regards to the past of TO’s banning characters just because the characters aren’t “themematical” to the soul calibur series such as the Star Wars characters and Algol were banned for that reason in France. While clone characters who have the same kind of moves but different properties are banned also. That’s just like me wanting to ban Falco in super smash bros. melee just because he is a clone of Fox with similar looking moves. Likewise, it doesn’t make sense to ban Ashlotte just because she is a clone of Astaroth’s fighting style. This is how I view this.
^I think that was due to some of those guest characters just being strictly better versions of the characters they were cloned from, everything exactly the same but more reach, personnaly I feel that someone should have bought up Sirlin’s article during the banning discussions shouted “what the **** do you think playing to win is” and left it at that but that’s what happened regardless.
Not going to critisize too much since I wasn’t around in person to see it happen so I may be missing things here, but Jaxel’s article really does make it seem like the SC community is just a little too happy to wield that banhammer.
Still, clones have their little differences and while one clone may actually be better than the “true character” that is worth a ban but if the clone was worst than the “true character” the clone would still be banned. The SC community is too ban happy, but it is reasonable to have console version characters banned and Hilde at least. But if the Hilde player really didn’t want to give up that time and effort playing Hilde, they can agree on to playing a no ring out stage in SC4. So there could be exceptions to the rule in that regard.
