I got my hat since I had to go into work for a holiday meeting (zzzzzzzzz…). A good chunk of gamestops are going to be having midnight releases monday night for the chunk of shit coming out Tuesday…among the releases include Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and NFS: Hot Pursuit. Most gamestops that are doing midnights are doing it for those titles however…seeing as how Sonic Colors is street dated you can pick it up at midnight as well. Just wanted to throw that info out there.
I also wanted to let people know that according to Gaf there’s some deal on Amazon for the game for 47.99 with 10 dollar credit. If you get the game from Amazon though you miss out on the hat…Do with this information what you will.
Man, from what Ive seen from a stream I watched last week. Sonic Colors looks like it only worth a rental.
The guy was playing through some sort of Challenge Mode which was just going through each level (40+ levels) without the story mode parts. The way that guy was running through the levels and how he beat it in about 3 hours made it look like something that would take only a day or two to beat if you count in the actual story parts.
Overall it looks and sounds really nice, and it seems like a decent enough game for the kids to play, but it seems a bit too easy to me. I would only rent it once then go on from there. Gotta be really wary with the money when it comes to Sonic games.
^ In order to ‘complete’ the game you have to find the red rings and go through the Sonic Simulator
I picked up Sonic Colors tonight but I haven’t started playing it yet but I plan to start on it before the night is done and dedicate most of my time tomorrow to it.
I’m currently on Sweet Mountain right now…this game is fun as hell. I haven’t S-ranked anything yet because I’ve been too busy trying to take my time with the stages. This game definitely solves the problem of Sonic running to fast through the stages since if you just speed through you’re going to miss out on a lot of stuff. I’m not even going that fast through thee stages and I feel like there’s so many different pathways to take which is only going to open up further the more wisps you unlock. I haven’t hit any frustrating platforming parts yet.
The one complaint that 1 nitpick I have so far is Sonic’s jump. When I held the button to jump with him it felt awkward as hell since for some reason when you do his highest jump he goes up…slows down near the apex slightly goes up faster for a microsecond then comes down. It’s like they made him hover or something. It was throwing me off during small platforming stuff but I’m getting used to it. It’s kind of hard to describe…If you played it you’d get what I’m saying.
Game is great. Jump mechanics are frustrating until you get the hang of them. Problem is, they didn’t specify that the longer you hold down the jump button, the higher Sonic jumps. This would be fine, as it was in the original games, but the problem is a tap is now a short hop instead of a jump you can use to platform. Once you get the hang of it it all evens out. Miss the spindash though(yeah I know, we have boost and spikes but you could have easily had a X+A on the ground command for spindash. But that’s being nitpicky)
Game is great. Enjoy it. Especially the fact that it’s a PLATFORMER. Which NO ONE HAS UNDERSTOOD SONIC IS FOR LIKE 9 YEARS. It’s not HOLD RIGHT… it’s a platformer that revels on reaction timing and rewards speed for sharp reflexes.
Recommended.
DS version is like rush but with less emphasis on boost. AKA Amazing.
^ the short hop was sort of introduced in Secret Rings and continued in Unleashed. So if you hadn’t played those then you wouldn’t have known about it.
I’ve been playing the game for probably a good 4-5 hours in game time. I haven’t gone to the aquarium park or asteroid coaster because I sort of put a halt on going forward to try and get more red rings. All the while I’m playing I’m trying to find stuff that could possibly annoy me and I’m pleasantly surprised to find that I’m finding it quite difficult. I haven’t run into any glitches in this game yet either. I can honestly say that most of the deaths that have occured to me in this game have been pretty much my fault and not the games doing. The camera does a pretty good job of letting you see where you’re going when you’re doing the major platforming sections…I even did the ‘spring’ section that I believe GT was up in a fuss about and I didn’t have nearly as many problems with it.
I’m also kind of surprised that I’m not completely excited about this game and I think it’s because my brain can’t fucking believe that this game exists. I think I’m still waiting for something in this game to piss me off with something and it’s not.
Finding all of the red coins is going to be a challenge but it’s a welcome challenge. In reality most people who don’t care to complete the game are gonna just blow through planets and it’ll probably take them 5-6 hours…maybe even less than that but seriously though…the game has way more length if you’re actually going to go back and actually explore all the stages’ nook and cranny with the Wisps to find the red rings. Then you have the Simulator stages to run through and if you really wanted too you can go back and try to S rank all the stages…though I don’t know if that does anything for you.
The only thing I can really see someone not liking this game is 1. You aren’t a fan of Sonic or 2. You don’t care much for Sonic’s 3d gameplay from his games despite the fact that there’s PLENTY of 2D platforming in this game. I’m highly recommending this game as well…especially if you’re a fan of the Sonic series. Go out and play this game now!
Edit:
oh yeah there is one other thing that did slightly bug me…on some of the 2d platforming sections they pull the camera out WAAAAAYY too far. I like being able to see everything laid out for me…but I’d also like to be able to see Sonic too ya know? Surprisingly I haven’t died on those sections though and I could still platform well on it but the first time it happened I was like ‘WHOA!’.
funny…I’m actually in Aquarium Park right now creaming myself over that exact song…
Edit:
something else about this game that I’m really liking is the fact that occasionally you can walk backwards. Now you’re probably saying to yourself ‘walk backwards? I don’t understand how that’s cool’. Ok so you first start out a stage in this game and it’s in 2D right? Your platformer instincts are going to tell you to immediately go to the right…but guess what? Sometimes there’s actually more stage to the left of that starting point. That’s what I’m talking about.
im impressed with the ds version. the new item system in multiplayer owns (takes skill to know when to use them, and skill in mitigating their effects), though i was kinda bummed that they removed tricks. the wisps more than make up for it though. looks like im gonna have fun making new routes for netplay
