So I had played the Sonic 4 trial the other day, and I as I was playing it it felt funny and I couldn’t figure out why. So I looked in this thread, and then saw youtube videos as to why.
Pretty interesting. I grew up on Sonic, this is bullshit I think I’ll just stick to hacks to enjoy some “new” stuff until they get this right.
Last hack I had played was about a month and a half ago, called S Factor: Sonya and Silver. It was fun.
Ok, ok, I get your point. Sonic 4 is not a great Sonic game by any means. Its good and has potential in the next episode. We have all been starved of a good sonic game but thats exactly what sonic 4 is “a good sonic game”. Ya its different but so are the new mario games. Its just natural evolution of a game series. Look at street fighter or mvc for god sakes.
Edit: SONIC 4 ROCKS!!! Go buy it, play it. Sonic fans complain too much, nothing is ever good enough anymore.
Addressing everything wrong with this post will take me more time than I’m willing to invest. So I’m just going to state the facts: you’re wrong, in every way.

Anyway I’m stoked if the rumors are true about that sonic 2 remix. It coincides with Sonic 4’s release. Perhaps Sonic Team will get the next installment right when they test out the Sonic 2 remix for themselves in the next installment(LMAO), but history says they won’t learn a thing

I love how complaining is being vilified, as though it somehow isn’t completely and totally justified to point out flaws and come to the conclusion that too many flaws warrants a pass. Hell, I have complaints about some of my favorite games.
That’s called being critical, and, if anything, needs to happen more often.
Stop the stupid, people. Acting like you were dropped at birth isn’t acceptable in most cases, and Sonic isn’t the exception, despite popular sentiment.
Dr. B’s homing attack always works which is already a massive improvement.
This is so true. I absolutly LOVE the new Castlevania game but I’m not gonna sit by and ignore the fact that the titan fights suck, all 3 of em, and the Static Camera is frustrating not because it hides the action but because it wont let me get the angle I want or because it wont let me get a better look at the wonderful enviroments Mercury Steam created. It would be dumb of me not to complain about them because those elements suck.
I think that to an extent Sonic is under the microscope by fans, but justifiably so.
At this point I’m ready to give up, and just acknowledge that Sonic as I knew it in the 90s is gone and just accepting it as it is.
So the homing attack in this isn’t activated by hitting the jump button twice (which worked and was awesome), rather it auto triggers when near an enemy? That’s fucking stupid if true.

Its worse then that actually it activates by just being in the air or near being in the air so like if your trying to jump off the very edge of a platfrm while going high speed, something at least I do in pretty much every Sonic game he will do the homing attack right off the edge of the platform. Tossed me into a couple of pits in the Demo.
You tap jump in the air (on jump or otherwise). If the crosshair isn’t up, it’s an airdash. If the crosshair IS up, it’s a homing attack.
The homing attack is the least of this game’s problems. Check out the video Sonichuman posted. The physics are fucked.

Mad Gear theme is great. Rest of the music is garbage.
The stage design isn’t as bad as I initially thought, though it pales in comparison to S3&K or Sonic 2.
Bad physics are bad. With proper physics this would have been more enjoyable.
If the stage design were better I’d say to hell with the homing attack and give Sonic back his insta-shield + shield powers. As it stands, the stage design really requires the air dash/homing attack.
Disappointing as this game is, it’s still better than Sonic CD and every 3D Sonic.

There’s nothing wrong about giving criticism on something…especially if it’s your favorite series. I already said earlier that I’m not going to be like a lot of people and go off the deep end and say ‘THIS GAME IS ABSOLUTE BALLS!’ because in the grand scheme of things it isn’t. Considering the Sonic games that I’ve played this game is actually in the upper part of the tiers…especially since they finally made SS playable in all the stages. As much fun as the game is though I want the flaws to be addressed so that the game can be better. This is a game that’s supposed to be for the old school sonic fans that played through 1-3k (That’s what they said their plan was anyway…make a game for the older sonic crowd and then make a game for the recent crowd). In this aspect they have fallen considerably short BUT the game is not horrible…it just needs work. The physics being the way they are in the game is in no way an evolution of the series and if it was actually on point this game could have easily have been compared to the classics imo.

I’m actually enjoying this game thus far. Physics are kinda wonky (and I don’t like that they tried to make some weird amalgam of old and new Sonic in his animations, should have been new Sonic with the ninja-like run), but it’s fun.
Best Sonic game made purely by Sonic Team in a long ass time.
