Chaos code is fun but has no online, but a patch for online is being tested currently, last blade 2 is great, it almost feels like marvel 2 air footsies: the game. tobal no.2 is something that just has to be seen to be beleived, it does have the most characters in a fighting game. Tasunoko vs Camcom is a great game that suffered like marvel 1 with the more hyped up game eclipsing its previous one. Also, try out CVS1 it is different than CVS2 but it is very fun to look at and play. And if you can, look on psn or dreamcast for the powerstone games, its smash in 3d.
Wasn’t aware of that or it slipped my mind…
What I do remember is that there was another more mature (as in Restricted, 15-16+ Minimum!) Variable Geo series year later. Might have been called Variable Geo NG… I really don’t know. Skipped that series after reading mostly negative reviews!
Wasn’t really a fighting game but I still wanna find out. In the summer of 2001 there was this dancing game they had at TILT west co mall. It was by the entrance. It wasn’t DDR or para para but it had this Beethoven or Mozart or Chopin type song that they remixed and when you danced they showed pictures of the famous music guys like Chopin and Beethoven on there. Does anyone know the game or the song?? I’ve been dying to find out what it is
when kof xi came out, I was so happy that they changed to a down agging system rather than the reset round type of thing. I was hoping that would be the standard for kof after xi but it never caught on for them. It helps the pacing of the match so much and as an arcade game, it would mean less total play time per player thus increasing likely hood of profit.
I think the glorious thing about tobal 2 isn’t the sheer amount of playable character, over 60% of them are a joke and only have a few moves, but its the rock solid engine. If you compare tobal 2 to its other psx relatives, fighters to have only a console release like bushido blade\bloody roar, tobal 2 just blows those games out of the water. Its so well designed by modern standards that it could of been its own arcade game during its initial release and could of very likely crushed tekken 3\VF 3 as tobal 2 did true 3d movement first and MUCH better to boot.
I heard about tobal 2 from friends but reading about it from other top players on srk, I just had to try it. 6\7 years later, I’m still talking about it. Its easily the best undervalued fighter to ever exist thus far in fighter history. Even by 2014 standards, its incredibly solid and robust.
Also Kula is strong for the reasons why I hated her in 02, but take those tools and put em on roids. Then she can convert her basic bnb into Gato juggles. Then cool Vanessa and Duo Lon infinites.
i played the shit out of this game when i was in tokyo back in 08. kaikan arcade in shibuya had it on the top floor.
had alot of fun playing it. walked by the cab like oh a wrestling game.
then was like wtf is that brocken from world heroes and sat down and played it for hours.
The game is a chipped diamond in my opinion. It’s really fun and the mechanics are mostly all there, I love the speed of the game when it’s played by two people who know what they’re doing but there are some fair criticisms about the game:
Movement is a bit sloppy for a KOF game, the characters slide a bit when running or back-dashing.
The damage scaling and values make little to no sense. Terry’s Power Dunk ->Break-> Buster Wolf does no damage but some characters like Oswald can do super move type damage from just basic combos if you use the Ace card. Dream Cancels do ungodly damage and are personally one of my favorite parts of the game.
-KGO (along with their good friend Eiji) is really strong. Why?
It’s members all do ungodly damage.
Each character has a generally useful leader super (Kula’s not so much but Gato and Oswald’s leader supers are both excellent).
Unlike MVC2, where putting Magneto, Roll and Strider on a team doesn’t mean that the team will be good, KGO’s members work really well with basically every character and the presence of even 1 member makes a team a threat.
However, KGO isn’t unbeatable, it’s just a strong team. Any team can be strong with just one member, leaving you with two spots to use whoever you want. For example, I like to run Terry/Gato/Kasumi, Kasumi isn’t too strong but Gato is a God and Terry is a really solid character.
What I love is:
The game has a great speed in my opinion
Tagging in and out feels great and the game really rewards players who can master the tagging system and use it in their combos.
Despite being different, the game rewards basic KOF fundamentals. The game isn’t like XIII, short hops aren’t godlike and normals easily stuff them. A player who knows the basics of KOF can do really well with any team.
Getting meter is really easy, so if you like a game where you can just pump out super moves and put stuff on the screen, this game is for you.
The Leader system adds a new layer of strategy to the game, some characters have great leader supers (Gato) while others have less useful one’s (Tizoc).
The game is like MVC2, a bit of a broken mess but there is something beautiful there. I hope it gets a UM release one day and I hope you pick it up!
And to add to this topic, I’ll say, the fatal fury series. Personally for me, ff3 was my favorite. Like kof xi and mvc2, it was broken and fun. Espiscally with the foreground and background mechanics
Just picked them both up, currently in the exploration phase. Both games are crazy good and have some interesting mechanics. Including parrying (both games).
