okay have you watched any of the basic tutorial videos on how to solder?
I hope you have, because its all answered in those basic videos.
If its coming off with a touch it means a few things.
-you’ve lifted the pad
-you have a cold jointed connection
-its both
what you should be doing is tinning the solder and then tinning the point and just barely melting the solder together to make the connection
Using lead-free solder will make this job a lot harder so don’t use it
Use some form of rosin cored solder which has a bit of flux inside to help you do it better. That residue you see there is flux.
Don’t put your iron on the board longer than necessary otherwise you’d lift the pad and judging from the fact that you asked this question means the pad is SOL with your skills.
If for the love of god you do use glue, don’t glue the point as it does nothing to help the joint be more sturdy, glue the joint away from the point and on the insulation as a stress relief
okay to clarify, yes i know how to solder and I have performed dual mods before they have just been with the use of pcb’s from other sticks with defined solder points so tinning the wasn’t as tricky and I have not lifted the pad. But to the matter at hand the solder points were not cold jointed which was cause for my confusion. I believe the issue is the type of solder that i was using this time around. I believe it is lead free since my friend just handed it to me un marked. I appreciate the help mr.mortified but your response came off really condescending. I asked because applying extra heat was suggested earlier in the thread and i didn’t think it was wise. so to clarify for myself and anyone else who stumbles across this thread I asked.
again thanks for the help
Sorry if it seems condescending, I have no idea of your workmanship, experience or skill so I had to come out with a “cover your bases” attitude which did actually hit the mark. Its just that there are a lot of questions that float around with people asking questions about why X doesn’t work and not describe what they have done in full detail, leaving SRKTT guys to assume what they did is wrong until proven otherwise.
Yes, lead-free solder does take a lot more to get to work, you’d need an iron that is a smidge hotter and you’d need to hold your joint very still for a good while before it actually solidifies.
As for the gunk around the joints, that can be insulation or flux. Alcohol does work, water works sometimes depending on the solder and flux used.
has anyone actually removed and replace the ls/dp/rs switch on one of these pads?
im game for doin it but i cant figure out where or how to re mount the switch in my case.
any links on where to get a replacement tptt switch
rocker,slider,toggle?
the switch on the board is small
