Alright, this is way important, so shout-outs will have to come some other time. In light of the discussion going on about GG possibly getting dropped, I think we should get something going RIGHT NOW. Let’s get West Coast GG back in the game.
It’s understandable that we’re lazy. We’re so spread out that meeting each other to play regularly is extremely hard, and given LA traffic - driving the distance is hardly worth it. Coupled with a general lack of support at SoCal’s arcades, it’s like the odds are way against us.
SoCal was really strong at EVO this year, and I’m really proud of all of you guys. I think we can take down the US next year if we show a little dedication and HYPE THAT SHIT, B!
I’m totally with Kevin on this. It’s something that Max and I had talked about a long time ago, and I think we should freaking do it. The train idea is also awesome. Amtrak has a line (Pacific Surfliner) that goes right up the coast (fucking awesome ride, too) all the way up to SLO. Trains also have power outlets, which means portable TVs (like Purrin’s) and GG action all the way up the coast. The only problem is that it’s like $40 per person ONE WAY. =/ Freaking balls.
Either way, let’s pick a date that’s a couple months off (November? Thanksgiving weekend?) and freaking HYPE.
In regards to FFA and AI, I think it’s a little early to start complaining. We need something consistent going. With AC at both FFA and AI, it’s dumb to try to force AI locals to go to FFA tourneys, and vice versa. Get something consistent going (AND WELL-RUN) and eventually they will start going to both for the comp. The key here is consistency and planning. We’ve got two arcades with AC now, and a console version imminent. We’ve got to work this to our advantage. I expect other areas of the country aren’t as lucky.
(Edit after having refreshed the thread: Damn I took too long to write this. Props to Max for getting the ball rolling!!)
Agreed. I think we should all keep track of what tournaments are happening and in what areas of the country, and we can all try to focus on one to rep SoCal at. Those of you who are rich jerks can go to all of them.
For those who will be taking Amtrak, the last train going Southbound from SLO leaves much earlier than the expected time for the tournament to finish. Thus, this is why we are planning on having overnight stay available for those considering to take the train. Also, if you ride all the way from San Diego, then the earliest train arrives here at around 2 PM (although this may vary depending on the day) so we have already decided to have the tournament start at around 3 PM so that there will be adequate time to pick up those traveling by train at the station and make it in time for the tournament. On site registeration will cease at 2 PM, and we can begin drawing brackets (with those traveling by train in mind, who we will already know about in advance) so we can have everything ready to go at 3 PM when everybody arrives. Of course, these are all potential times that we are still working with.
And like render mentioned, Amtrak trains all have 120V outlets so you could play your PS2 on it if you have a portable screen. The only thing is that you look like a doofus but it shouldn’t be a problem if the train isn’t crowded and if you’re shameless. I’ve actually done this myself (:D) since I’ve used Amtrak several times to go from SLO to my hometown, so that’s another thing to consider if you’re thinking of Amtrak. The only problem is the cost. Carpooling will obviously be cheaper, but if you travel alone then in some cases Amtrak can actually save you money.
Also, we considered having it Thanksgiving weekend, but then quickly dismissed the idea because of possible complications with people having to attend family events.
Edit: Stormlocke, if Nov 10 doesn’t work for you, then we still have plenty of time to move the date to another weekend. I’ll go talk about this with the other SLO people to try and accommodate you. Would one week before or after the 10th work out for you? Also, if anyone else who is considering to attend this tournament has specific weekends that would not work out during the month of November, please let me know.
You guys actually want me to do RanBats at AI again? I’m all for it, actually. I’m sure Ken wouldn’t mind the extra flow comin’ in from GG again (oh snap, makin’ that money-- kinda).
Seriously though, we had a really strong showing at EVO. But with the Slash/AC issue at EVO (and me crashing my car, making tournies at AI kinda dead), I’m sure we can get a strong scene going again and yeah. Cuz. …Yeah. I’m bad at influencial speeches. I’m not sure if I spelled influencial right. Is it with a T? Maybe after what, 2 Quarters of ranbats go by, the best from FFA and the best from AI can duke it out in a 5v5? Or 3v3? I dunno. I’m just randomly throwing shit out there again. You guys gonna make me work again. Putting Mexicans to work, I swear…
I can see the CA-Unified tourney panning out, but I’m worried about staffing/organizing issues.
Here’s my brainstorm on schedule:
Week 1: Sat, Sep 1 - FFA, ranbat
Week 2: Sat, Sep 8 - AI, ranbat
Week 3: Sat, Sep 15 - FFA, ranbat
Week 4: Sat, Sep 22 - AI, ranbat
Week 5: Sat, Sep 29 - FFA, ranbat
Week 6: Sat, Oct 6 - AI, ranbat
Week 7: Sat, Oct 13 - FFA, ranbat
Week 8: Sat, Oct 20 - AI, ranbat
Week 9: Sat, Oct 27 - FFA, ranbat/local finals
Week 10: Sat, Nov 3 - AI, ranbat/local finals
Week 11: Sat, Nov 10 - CA Unified Tournament @ San Luis Obispo
Rationales:
[]Saturdays, yes?
[]Staggered weeks permit either rest time or craziness to attend both arcades.

We conveniently get 5 ranbats per locale until the SLO finale.
Other issues:
[]coordinating with NorCal
[]coordinating with other states that are close enough to be a threat^H^H^H^H^H^Hhelp.
Jo and I were just talking about the staggering idea. Not sure if the ranbats should have anything to do with the SLO tourney, though. Is that what ranbats are normally for?
Just wondering, how many people go to Arcade Infinity for AC? And on what days? I’m kind of planning to go, but it’d be nice to know which days are good first.
