Before 2001
Why did everybody stop renting at physical stores?
@Ronin:
For me it was lack of selection. I like movies that are new and not mainstream and some video stores just don’t keep up.
Although, sometimes it was laziness.
**Lol, damn man I can’t even remember.
Probably somewhere between 2001-2003.**
Friday…LOL. Got Prince of Persia from RedBox for 1.50
I can’t believe that whole post got erased before i hit send  anyway
Blockbuster loses to netflix on laziness - movies at your door
Blockbuster loses to redbox - in convenience for people who still want a physical disk
Blockbuster loses to both in terms of their overheard from all of their locations, which used to be a huge plus and is now a huge liability.
Blockbuster loses to streaming - for people with good enough internet
And blockbuster loses to “the internet” for people who have no problem with the legality of downloading on both cost and convenience.
They don’t lead in any area at all anymore the only real reason to rent from a blockbuster store is if you live less than 2 minutes from the store, there are no redboxes nearby and have no or bad internet.
It has been months, at least 4 months. I just use Netflix now.
back when napoleon dynamite came out on dvd
LOL. Those are the exact reasons I occasionally THINK about renting from the BB near me. I rarely do it though. I might for Medal of Honor.
I don’t want to derail the thread, but @ the rumors. How come I never heard of these? Have any more by any chance? The most ridiculous I could remember was people calling Guile, “Gully”
Good times.
For me it was out of my schedule to return the videos. I would somehow have time to rent the movies but it got to be inconvenient not having the time to return videos or feel like driving back to the stores I took them to. So, I’d be charged late fees, which weren’t too bad and I’d pay them, but over time the the late fees became a hassle. So I got Netflix.
This redbox is pretty decent. I rented The Dark Knight over the weekend. Blockbuster might go out of buisness next year. They’re getting too expensive and can’t compete.
Double posted on purpose to say that there needs to be a video game version of redbox. BB has gone way too high for renting games now.
The premise of not having late fees would have been a great thing back in the day. I used to work for Blockbuster back in 2002. I’d say on average we would make at least 30% or more of our money on our busiest nights by charging for late fees. Usually 2 out of 3 customers would have a late fee on their account whenever they would come to rent movies, and back then late fees cost as much as a rental itself. Almost everyone would have one late movie on their account–and some more than that. The sad thing is usually we knew customers on a first name basis because they were infamous for always having several late fees whenever they’d return to rent movies.
Usually said people wouldn’t mind the late fees. Of course BB got over on them in this manner, but one has to wonder if they were thinking down the road if maybe they would take away the fees to benefit the customer and stay in business to compete with someone who may not have charged late fees. Probably not.
I think that if they could come up with something that would change their business model completely and make it a draw for people to get off their lazy rear ends and get to a store to rent again, things would be different, but it’s a tad too late for that. Netflix is too good.
The redbox closest to where i live has a games button on it now along with a movie button, on the first screen although no games come up when you press it. So you’ll probably be able to do it soon, however I always thought it would be unprofitable for them to try.
Speaking of profitability i remember reading that Redbox still wasn’t making a profit a couple of years back i wonder if/when that changed
It has to be more than a decade since I’ve rented anything from a video store. Either I’ll see it in the movies, buy it on DVD or wait for Cable.
I’ve rented anime and movies from Playstation Network off the PS3 because sometimes the anime was exclusive and you could only rent it there (Xam’d, Gundam Unicorn) or I just felt like watching a movie and not owning it. I have never cared to bother with Netflix personally.
I remember one about a Chun Li special move where she throws her bracelet like a frisbee. There are probably ancient threads in FGD by the SRK old timers who would remember a lot better than I would.
Rumors were par for the course in the days before Internet. You either found special moves and other stuff like that for yourself, or you were told about them. The rumors were funny, but the real information was even funnier. People would pull off a special move and have no idea exactly how they did it, so they’d tell you weird shit like “Do two fireball motions in a row to get Ryu’s ‘yookit’ uppercut–but only on the left side!”
Um, I’d say back when Hollywood Video was in my neighborhood shopping center. I used to get CvS2 and some other stuff on PS1 and PS2. The one I had by me had 3 games for 5 bucks, 7 days. That was about…5 years ago, and the place is now an Advance Auto Parts.
5-6 years maybe…:wtf:
my brother has netflix though. I can rent if I want but already have enough to watch as is. boatload of movies on modded xbox and ps3.
When I was a kid we would rent movies every week. Why? Because they would rent horror movies and any Rated R movies to kids and no one gave a crap. If I wanted to see an R Rated movie in the theaters I needed an adult and / or my parents would say no. But when it came to video no one gave a damn.
Hell has C.H.U.D. or the Basketcase movies ever been shown on TV? Rentals were a must back then. Five movies for four dollars and you can hold them for an entire week. You could forget your rental card too as long as you remembered the card number. Good times!
I walked into blockbuster to check if they had any good used games (they didnt), and also saw the used dvd’s were like 5 for 20 bucks now. Also, I was alone, except for 2 cashiers (lol) and 1 super old lady, who probably was pissed she couldn’t find VHS tapes.
I remember Friday nights and weekends that place would be PACKED. Now its a ghost town
