I realised that this game and the first Street Fighter 3 seem to have flopped even more than Third Strike which also shared a similar fate but not as bad.
But why was that so and the Alpha series received such a good soar?
Did players prefer having more characters to the game? Because I know many people here thought that the Street Fighter 3 series took it too far with freaks and other obscure characters. While I wouldn’t mind having Cammy and Sagat in, I still do not understand why people thought the games would have flopped if Ryu, Ken, Akuma and Chun Li weren’t in the SF3 games. I don’t think Fatal Fury fans were disappointed that only Terry returned in Mark of the Wolves.
For many years I thought that Street Fighter 3 and 2nd Impact were the same game with new characters as the endings were EXACTLY the same as well as the character portraits. But I soon discovered that wasn’t the case.
For one, Ibuki’s and Oro’s music were completely different in both games. And certain characters had new stages altogether. Gill’s stage in New Generation was the Mediterannean Sea and in 2nd Impact, it was the Hidden Shrine.
So, did anyone else enjoy these games or 2nd Impact for the most?
I think 2nd Impact is the only game where I thought the music was probably the best part of the game, regardless of how gorgeous the backgrounds were.
Favourite soundtracks
Ibuki’s Sharp Eyes
Hugo’s Bottoms Up
Gill’s Nile
Alex’s Jazzy NYC (I think this is the name)
2nd Impact was a good game and is it strange to think that I might like it a bit more than Third Strike? It seems to be the same case for the Alpha series in that I somewhat prefer Alpha 2 to Alpha 3.
What did you think of Street Fighter 3:2nd Impact?
funny you mention this, i just played through 2nd impact yesterday night for the first time in many years. Good times. The presenatation was a lot more light-hearted and it was nice change of pace from playing 3s all day. I remember playing this game for the first time when came out, and being turned off by the cartoony graphics and the new characters. But after getting into 3s for the past year, and going back to it, it seemed a lot more enjoyable. I guess you could say 3s, helped me take the Street Fighter 3 more seriously, which in turn made 2nd impact more “fun.” Kinda like playing pocket fighters after playing alpha all day, it’s a fun diversion, but still not to be taken seriously.
Sorry, if this doesnt make sense, its 5 am and have not had any sleep all night.
I like 2I’s background and audio presentation more than 3S now. And character’s like 2I Sean and Ibuki alone would make me perfectly content with a HSF3 being put out.
I loved the Street Fighter 3 series since New Generation came out in the arcades. I loved all the new character designs and what not. Getting used to all the frames of animation took some ajusting though.
I liked how everything was really stripped back like old school Street FIghter. And
the Parry system was awesome.
Second Impact didn’t even make it to arcades in my city. I had to wait till 2004 to buy it and a dreamcast in Germany to play it. It was kind of my 3rd Strike subsitute since DC Third Strike is so hard to find.
Second Impact is a fun game. But it doesn’t have the tightness in it’s game mechanics but it is a big step forward from NG.
In terms of presentation I’d say:
2I fuckin’ rocked. The music, stages, effects, and general actually felt like sf. Third Strike still doesn’t feel quite right compared to the rest of the series.
2i has a lot of non-aesthetic problems. AFAIK it still has option select parry and air down parry, plus Ibuki and Akuma are stupid broken. Then there’s the aesthetics; the game’s art looks like someone used a pencil with a 10-year-old eraser to draw it and the voices are fubared (Rocky Balboa Necro and “screamy mimi” Elena).
