So what did Sakurai REALLY think of Smash Brothers?

He was clowning on your dumb logic, bro.

I thought the mentality of brawl was: “I don’t want logic and strategy in my game; just want to mash stuff and win”. I played smart and tried my hand at the advanced techniques(been practicing them for awhile now), but I was up against a good player with a great character (Fox) and my Bowser couldn’t do much about him. I’m not saying a beam sword would have won it for me, but it would have helped a lot, and I don’t see why I couldn’t use one. Just cause of teh competitiveness? How does the game lose it’s competitive edge when they’re items in play? Do the other players just stop playing when a pokeball is thrown?

Maybe it’s the tourney scene that ruined this series.

I was talking about how some will complain (and I probably generalized M. D. here, my apologies) about someone better than them and wanting to even the playing field by adding in items. Don’t get me wrong, item play can be good and fun (I play it when I get bored, or did when I played), but I wouldn’t be surprised if some saw that as an easy way out against someone who is better than them.

Part of that was probably due to the balance of the Smash games. You’re using a low tier character against a seasoned player who uses Fox, a top tier character.

Eh, you don’t know the story do you?

Early smash used items, but were later banned due to capsules falling and hitting people. It was totally random so they had to take out all of the items.

Why do so many people think that they were ruled out becuase they were scrubby? People began to get that mentality because the smash community didn’t make it there business to tell anybody. They simply called it “gay” (watch how you use that word, it can seriously be trouble using it next to the wrong person  ). That is where the community went downhill, where banning was so normal that they were willing to ban ANYTHING. I don’t know if the community would have evovled better if they knew this story, but atleast they would know the merits of banning rather than whining about everything and getting things banned because they were not able to counter it.

E.G. the infinite wall shine banned from fox during the mlg days. That was EXTREMLY situational and yet they smash community whined.

Another is wobbling which was also banned during the MLG days. ( I think it’s still banned, i don’t know) which was also banned in brawl ( i think) becuase of whining. What were their excuse?

“dashizwiz would be outplaying him and he would get a grab and lose the GAME”< That’s laughable.

What you guys need to do is talk to the youger generation of smash about playing to win and changing up a playsyle in order to do so. Because i am next to fed up of what you guys go around letting those smashers think.

I’m just going to quickly state that I highly recommend anyone reading Negative Zero’s posts to invest in a salt lick. Almost everything he’s posting regarding the history of the Smash community is false.

Fun Fact: The nascence of the competitive Smash community has closer ties to the 2D fighting game community, or, SRK, than most people know, which helps explain why the game is played the way it is. This is coming from someone who was around the scene from damn-near the beginning.

But I’ll let you guys continue to talk about the game and its community as though you’re in the know.

Not so coincidentally, the thread took a turn for the better for once after you and Smashchu stopped embarrassing yourselves and shouting from your high horses.

Synikal: When are you gonna stop posting about this shit? Seriously.

Let it go man.

There’s no need for you to think anything. Sakurai spelled it out for you. Smash is a game that was designed to reward players who are good at the elements that were intentionally included in Smash. The game gives you some options, and you are expected to get good at working within those options. The fighting game community does not like this, because it is used to creating new options that exploit glitches or programming oversight. The more casual gaming community prefers this because it means they can get good at the game by just playing it and practicing a lot, and don’t have to go on forums like SRK to learn about “esoteric” concepts like crouch-teching, unfly, plinking, walk-cancelling, etc.

I know, I know, I’m sorry. I know “better” in the context of FGD Smash discussion means “an abiding, cavernous, darkness”. Can’t be held responsible for your gestures if there’s no light coming in.

Continue the circle-jerk. Please. No, it’s okay. I carried a Maglite. I’ll see my way out. Hopefully, I don’t step in anything.

EmblemLord:

Telling someone that’s knowledgable about a subject to simply “let it go” when a group of people are ignorant about said subject, and spreading said ignorance, is easier said than done. I could walk away from a theist claiming the Earth is flat, or is only 5,000 years old, but there’s no way in hell I’d be happy about it. In fact, I’d say it would be damned irresponsible. But I guess that’s just my general disposition.

Allright, I’m really done.

There’s right and wrong ways to correct misinformation. Throwing a hissy fit and calling everybody stupid meanie heads falls in the latter category.

Synikal: Why is it your job to correct ignorance? Just roll your eyes at your monitor and laugh when you see nonsense. Your life will become 100x more enjoyable I promise. And you can’t eliminate ignorance completely. So why stress yourself? I shall reiterate. Let it go. You and I come from the same place so I know what you are saying and, but who cares. It’s nothing to get miffed about or feel like you need to go out of your way to fix, correct or educate others on. This thread was pretty civil for the most part so that tells me most people have no real animosity towards the game itself and that’s what matters.

I guess you’re just better than me, Emblem.

BTW, I believe it should be EVERYONE’S job to correct ignorance EVERYWHERE they see it. But I’ll concede your point for other reasons.

Quoting this to lessen the chance of people overlooking this post and missing what’s probably the most baffling opinion ever voiced on the whole “Smash vs. FGs” argument

I’m not really getting what you’re trying to say here.

Damn man, instead of throwing insults everywhere, how about you inform some of us so we can move this disscussion forward? This is what i personally heard about the whole items ban thing.

Like i said in your alpha 3 thread, no need to insult someone for no reason. Hopefuly you can tell me the REAL reason all items were banned in melee.

SynikaL, how many threads are you planning to come to get infurated by the srk ignorance, call all the people idiot and then tell them that are you done, every time that the smash topic arise you pop up from nowhere expecting to change the opinion of the people, instead you got trolled every time, seriously dude, get over it, people on this site, dont like, dont care for smash, and it doesnt matter how many times you try it wouldnt change

It’s the manor in which he does it.

In case you didn’t know SynikaL, we are real people and do not like to be insulted constantly, which is why i don’t insult people.

Aperrantly, i was correct on items

but West Coast Smashers wanted them turned on. Those in favour stated that the use of items required skill and did not reduce the depth of the game, while those against argued that items were unfair because of the element of randomness involved when they were turned on, particularly the unpredictability of their spawning in relation to explosive items such as Bob-ombs and capsules. Eventually, the community reached a consensus that items should be turned off in tournaments, due to the element of randomness.

Thread got TL;DR after about 9 pages, but I have to admit I wasn’t fond of Melee’s much-increased speed, and am glad they dialed it back for Brawl. I like a slower-paced fighter, not one where I’m back at over 100 damage 10 seconds after being off the revival platform.

Add another vote for ‘tripping is BS’ here as well. When I want to move my character, he needs to MOVE, not fall on his ass.

Personally, I use all but two items (star/curry), and only turned off the stupidest stages (Mario Bros., 75m, and maybe one other) in random select.

Further, when we were studying Brawl, we found that on Medium, items spawned every 14-17 seconds. The only things really randomized was what spawned and where, and we figured those things were easy enough to mitigate by ensuring you controlled most of the stage at that point, and not putting lots of hitboxes out around that time.

Not to mention that the end-reason the consensus for the universal ban on items was that key problem (exploding capsules) not being possible to remove without removing 'em all. And then Brawl introduced a method to do so. And made it much less detrimental if that problem DID occur.
