I was talking with Tsugunosuke about this on our way back from Osaka - one of the great things about CvS2 is that there are so many characters in so many grooves that you can tailor your team to fit your own personality and playstyle. A character in one groove isn’t necessarily played the same in another groove. Hell, the same character in the same groove can be played completely differently by two different people and both styles can be effective. With the team format, you can use any character you want - no matter how “weak” they are, as long as you team them up with good characters. All of these things put together change character matchups drastically (e.g. even though Zangief vs. Hibiki is bad, he can at least build meter for the next character to take her out). In SF4, if your character has a bad matchup in the first round… they’ll have a bad matchup in the second round too (because it’s the same character!). I’ve been playing SF since the originall, and CvS2 is without a doubt better than any SF I’ve ever played. It’s almost a perfect game. I’ve never been one to follow the crowd, so I don’t care if there are more people playing SF4. I know which game is BETTER, so I’ve stuck with CvS2.
Luckily, Japan still has tournaments. I want to go to Stunfest and NCR this year, but it might be too expensive…
Yah, if the arcade scene was healthier here in the US people could just keep doing their thing, and forget about the rest. The annoying thing about the US fighting game scene is they are quite collectivist when playing games. I mean no one would even give a fuck or bother to talk shit about SFIV if it didn’t ruin the scene for games that they love. Now professionals feel its no longer worth the time to keep playing the older games because they see where the money is at now. So, fighting game players as a whole seeing that the best competition have moved on led everyone to follow suit.
Would be much easier…Wake up one day, and you decide you want to play a game of cvs2. Well, just visit the nearest game center, and you’re there. Don’t really have to give a shit what others are doing.
SF4 killed the scene for a bit here too - but after a couple of months people came back to CvS2. There are a ton of people who only play SF4 because that’s what everyone else is playing (read: SHEEP), but I play what I like. There were enough of us in the same boat to keep the scene alive. It might be possible in the States as well.
SF4 at Capcom Olympics Top 4 were
Sagat
Sagat
Rufus
Sagat
Kindev lost in the first round of top 8 to get 5th, and he also used Sagat. Not sure about the other 3 ppl.
CvS2 top 4 were
A-Sakura/Blanka/Bison
N-Akuma/Rolento/Chun
K-Geese/Blanka/Sagat
K-Hibiki/Chun/Sagat
Three different grooves. Nine different characters. The rest of the top 8 were myself in A, Tsugunosuke in N, Chari in C, and Sacchansan in K. That’s VARIETY. That’s FUN.
I agree with you Gunther! Would be EPIC if you attended Stunfest, and please fire up your blog again (for example, a small report from the a-cho olympics would be awesome). Cheers.
Same as any other Yama - s.roundhouse a LOT… whiff sand kicks for meter… switch from RC fierce slash to RC strong slash to keep them out… if they jump in from far, s.strong as anti-air… closer than that, c.fierce or RC sand kick to slash… punish all rolls with either his bnb or a throw… meaty c.forward on wakeup to lead to either a jab headbutt or c.short/jab into sandkick into slash… and roll activate. A Yama has the advantage of getting guaranteed damage (albeit pixels) and the ability to lock down K with his GC CC, plus he can sneak in an overhead as well. If the CC connects, it’s pretty easy, and he can get meter again quickly no matter what.
I need to work in more headbutts, but even with the basic game plan I use, I do well.
This is summed up really really well. The whole playing more than one character is something that I really enjoyed, on top of how different grooves can drastically alter play style.
Had a CvS2 tournament locally. Got 13 people which isn’t bad for CvS2. Just gota keep pushing it and be willing to help others learn more about it.
West coast canada could bring this game back at any time.
its actually the most balanced fighter ever made, because most characters will have at least 1 viable groove. it was pretty scrubby that RC’s were considered to have broken the game, if anything if there werent RC’s the game would be even more broken. imagine team are with CC’s but no RC’s, what would you do against K groove lol. you would be stuck with no low jump, normals, and CC. k groove would have everything over A in that game until A gets CC, then people would just complain K was OP.
K groove would be more overpowered to that no RC versian of cvs2, then a groove is right now to k in current cvs2. so we should be thankful theres rc
They probably say it was broken because they can’t do it. If the motions were in the character command lists in training mode they’d stop bitchin. They’d kick themselves if they knew just how easy it was.
Further judging by how your average person plays K, rage doesn’t seem so scary that it can’t be beaten by non-RC A/C/N Groove.
–Is the game dead just because people who run Evo say it’s not being run anymore? People still seem to play it all over.
