So Ken is actually Japanese

Well this is news to me, I never really bothered reading much on Ken in vasilli’s SF Plot guide, but after reading it again I come across this-

While the last name of Masters does bring up some questions on how a Japanese man can have an english name, you need to recall that he was given that last name because-
1- A retarded name mixup with some girl’s toys
2- He is a ‘Master’ of martial arts

So I guess american players were fooled for years on Ken’s true background.

I knew he was Asian from the black eyebrows. :wgrin:

Explain why he speaks Japanese. This is new news to me too. Isnt he in one of the richest families in the world?

Nobody cares. To me, Ken is simply the Street Fighter version of Spicolli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. That’s how I thought of him as a kid, that’s how he is to me.

^Fair enough.

Yeah. I’m failing to see why this is even a thread.

I always thought he was half and half. Oh well…bout as bad as everybody thinking Urien is Mexican when he’s Egyptian.

I always thought Ken was full American. I thought wrong.
/facepalm

@deadontime- The quote in your sig is the movie ver. BTW, the original one is longer and a tad more impressive.
Still Urien’s ethincy is almost impossible to determine since he is genetically created wasn’t he?

Makes you wonder if Robert Garcia is Japanese, though I don’t think that’s the case.

Ken never looked Japanese in the earlier games, they only made him moreso as time has gone on. He doesn’t look Japanese in 3rd Strike. shrug He’s American. I think the Japanese were upset he was more popular than Ryu and are trying to racially draft him on the sly. O_o

^Are you retarded? If Ken was more popular than Ryu he’d appeared in more games than Ryu, he’d be the main character in most SF games, comics and animation than Ryu.
Ken has been Japanese since SF1 (read the quote I posted).

We the Asian delegation select the rza, the gza, old dirty bastard, inspector deck THE WU TANG CLAN

thanks for the story thread

I wanted to put the original quote but it wouldn’t fit in the sig.
As far as Urien goes…I believe they something like he’s Egyptian and Gill is from Greece

Not really. Ryu is the flag ship character of Street Fighter. Doesn’t make him the fan favorite.

Nah don’t think so, Ryu had at least 2 manga series focused on him. The 3 SF animated movies and SF2 V focused on him as well. Actually in 2 V, the focus was split between Ryu and Ken wasn’t it?
I’ll agree that Ryu is the flagship guy, but I don’t think Ken is more popular than Ryu in Japan at least.
If anything, at best Ryu and Ken are of equal popularity over there.

they wont let full blooded gaijins practice shotokan/anatsuken, even the bastardized form like sean. hes a quarter japanese also. and dan, i dunno what he is.

Dan is Japanese or Thai, but looking at his skin colour and the characters on the back of his Gi, I’d say he is Japanese. Also Dan combines Muai Thai with the style Gouken taught.

I’m assuming he means character selection in the video games rather than for story purposes. Ken has been upgraded much more than Ryu over the years and is higher up on the tier scale in most games. Perfect example would be just like he said, Third Strike.

This matters as much as failed SF movie adaptations care about what they’re trying to adapt.
