So I could have died tonight

it’s been said, but you gotta re-torque the lug nuts after a certain amount of km’s when new tires have been put on or after a rotation.

also, re: how can 5 of them come off

they probably came off 1 at a time, not all at once. think of it as a snowball effect.

glad you’re OK, OP. be thankful for that, and take this as a lesson, rather than pointing fingers.

Most important is that you are alive. Everyone be safe.

Same thing. If they aren’t looking at the wheel before fitting it, they shouldn’t be fitting it. I can’t stress how much they’re at fault here. If anything happened to you they’d be in serious shit right now.

You need to take action, if not for yourself, for the hundreds of other people they’re fitting tires for over the winter. You got lucky, the next one might not.

As far as this “re-torque” the lug nuts after 24 hours, that’s something I’ve never heard of while I went through automotive schooling and worked at BMW and Toyota dealerships. It’s OK to check if the lug nuts were tightened to spec if you know what the ft-lbs are and set your torque wrench as such. But just like how it’s unsafe for loose lug nuts, the same can be for over tightening them as well. Rotating tires help prolong tire life due to alignment of the suspension components that varies the scrub/contact areas of the individual tires. If not, you will minimize grip, increase hydroplaning, increase the chances of punctures/pinches. It saves the consumer more money to rotate tires than having to replace a set, or if the car is AWD, all 4.

OP’s issue: It happens though when lug nuts don’t get put back on, I’ve seen a few people forgetting to put the lug nuts back on due to being busy, spacing out, got pulled to help another technician and the service writer assumed the job was done and could be off the lift and back to the owner. Usually if this happens, the owner gets compensated and then some.

This and what he said before about if they are already willing to pay they know what happened and know it’s their fault. I’ve worked at several shops and this is usually the first attempt to put out the fire and make it go away.

Damn, that’s some shit right there. A friend of mine had similar shit but the car got out of control and they got hit and her husband died. She has permanent spinal damage and the lawsuit money can’t fully cover that shit and she can’t work at all anymore. Had to talk to her to keep her from killing herself but it’s too depressing to talk to her.

That’s some extreme negligence right there, definitely get a good lawyer.

A wheel falling off = a near death experience in Canada. Good to know. Godspeed.

I google’d it and found this poorly formatted article http://www.wheels.ca/both-driver-owner-liable-if-vehicle-loses-wheel/

If you were driving a commercial vehicle, then you would be liable.
Since you just had winter tires installed, it is unlikely that you would be charged and the shop that serviced your vehicle would be held liable.

Saw two busted cars in that picture, you’re used to almost dying huh.

“Almost?” No excuses, slacker.

I’m curious to know how did it end up?

They ended up paying 1200$ worth of damages. They wanted me to pay the wheels for about 250$ but after some arguing they just made me pay 125$ (half price) for four wheels and gave me free oil change. Fuckit I wanted to get this shit settled so I agreed. Fuck them though.
