Snowboarding

Im heading up to Bear Mountain this weekend. My buddies and i got a huge 5 bedroom cabin. shit is gonna be popping.

Board is currently getting waxed, cant wait to hit the jumps.

backcountryoutlet.com is a pretty good site, too. I’ve probably ordered from them 25-30 times over the years, buying everything from a roof rack for my car to boards to socks and wax and other small things. They’re the same as dogfunk.com/backcountry.com, just as a heads up.

Fuck yes… I love Bear. Miss that place like crazy.

How does on Snowboard?

Is it vert stuff, or is it just like mostly downhill Skateboard esque hill bombing? Can one ollie on a snowboard?

Lots of different kind of snowboarding… there are the people who just cruise around the resort, there are backcountry riders who get all up in untracked snow and ride stuff that is only accessible by snowmobile/helicopter, there are park riders - people who hit the jumps/rails/boxes that resorts put together on a run, there are urban riders - think street skateboarding, but on a snowboard. And then there are pipe jocks… people who just ride the u-tube. And boardercross… people racing kinda shit.

Happy go snowboard day

Just came back from bear… it was meh

I don’t know if it was the cold gray weather, being the driver, having the same old 162 giant board, or my boots somehow disappearing from my garage so I have to use old ones which aren’t too much worst, or that i’m nearly broke and i just spent 70$+ to go, or that I went with 2 friends and I usually go with cousins, or that I don’t have contact lenses and I wore glasses uncomfortably under my goggles,

but I overall wish I didn’t go and didn’t have that great of a time.

I had moments of joy but meh, I don’t know the magic is gone.

I don’t know how the pros do it, going out to the back country all day and building jumps in such cold temperatures.

Yea I can’t picture riding at Bear with a 162 would be very fun lol.

Man I went up to Bear on Friday and damn, the jumps weren’t that great. The long lines didn’t help either.

Next day went to Summit and wtf is Summit doing with the better jumps?!!?

Clearing the two bigger jumps that they had just felt so good. Can’t wait to go back and ride normal (I ride goofy, but I want to make sure I can do both).

Anybody know which kind of park board size i would need? I’m 5’11’’

It is a common misconception that the size correlates to one’s height. Your weight dictates how long the “ideal” board is, not your height… how much do you weigh?

I weigh 180 lbs.

I cant wait to go back up.

BTW invest in “volleyball” knee pads. They are only like 10- 15 bucks, but your knees never get cold and if you just happen to land on knees, you just slided without a bruised knee. Things helped out soo much.

At 180, most people would want something between 156-158 for a park board.

It’s also personal preference, too. I’m a little under 180 and riding a 152 for a jib board, because I like them short. Can’t ride it anywhere other than the park, though… super sketchy at higher speeds.

Went to Snow Summit on Sunday. Was better than i expected. I was expecting ice and crowds. But it was pretty empty and the snow was somewhat soft. Ive been hitting more jumps (although small ones) still need to get used to the whole takeoff ->air->landing thing. Right now im just launching myself off a jump, when i try to do an actual jump, i lose all control and just eat it. So i started practicing the jumping on just the ground. Hopefully i can get some air on jumps soon.

When going off jumps you must want one thing, “air.” If you dont want air, then there is no point of going off jumps.

Ever since I’ve made this my mindset, jumps just have been that much easier for me.

Thanks for the advice thirtytwoutside, I currently ride a 158. BTW my brother rocks thirtytwo boots.

No problem man. Yeah, I love 32 boots… on my 5th pair of Lashed and don’t see myself riding anything other than them for a while.

Yeah, one of the biggest things with riding park is that you just have to keep trying over and over again… builds confidence. Luckily, SoCal is a great place for that since Mt. High and Bear focus so much on park. I never really rode park til I moved down to LA and was riding at Bear every weekend for the entire winter. As you get more comfortable, you’ll become more confident… and then you hit the bigger stuff, style it out, that kinda shit.

With jumps, just hit it with enough speed to clear the flat and land past the knuckle (where it starts to slope downwards); don’t focus so much on getting air. You want to get used to the feeling of being off the ground before you focus on getting height.

Just went to Boreal in Cali for 2 days. My first time snowboarding, but I’ve been skating for 8 years. Holy shit, I got my ass handed to me my first day, I got around 4 hours of sleep and I felt like shit. I ate it like 50 times. I thought I would never get the hang of it.

My second day, I did MUCH better. I was linking turns and I was able to go down the intermediate run without falling the majority of times. Shit is fun and the instructor was saying I was ready for Black Diamonds now… not really sure about that.

But yeah, what do you think the next step for me is, in terms of progression?

Thanks.

Oh man, Boreal. That place is a lot of fun… people hate on it for being small and not having much vertical feet, but every time I’m there it’s awesome.

I would suggest getting comfortable riding blues. Make sure you can link turns consistently, making sure you have pretty good control of the board and it goes where you want it to instead of letting the board take you where it wants you to go (there’s a time and place for that, but not when you’re just starting out). It’s good that you went 2 days in a row, though… that helps a lot. A lot of learning in snowboarding is just muscle memory, kinda like with Street Fighter… your body will learn as you go along.

Confidence is key… gotta be confident in what you’re doing, don’t think like you’re gonna fall.

I am in need of some low light lenses, last season I cracked 2 of them on my A-frames from crashing into gaper tourists. Pretty stocked though that I was able to sell my xl unions(that I got suckered into) and got a pair of mediums for only 25 bucks more. Word to all, avoid The Click if you are in Colorado or Utah, all they want is your money and will rip you off.

Damn, that sucks… sorry to hear. A Frame lenses ain’t cheap. That’s one of the major reasons why I stopped using Oakleys and picked up a pair of Anon Realms. Still spherical but way cheaper… $30 > $70 for replacement lenses. I do miss those hi-intensity yellows though.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I can go down Castle (which is Green I think) without falling. I feel I have total control of the board, if I want to turn right, I turn right and vice versa. I think the thing that freaks me out are the random bumps, those fuck me up sometimes and if I’m not ready for them, i’ll eat it.

I went down some steeper parts of the mountain, but I ALWAYS speed check before going down it, I just don’t want to go that fast cause I landed headfirst while starting out. But yeah, I’m going back to Boreal for my 3rd and last class, so I get the free season pass. I’ll try out some Blues too, see how that goes.
