Snowboarding

gagag I got a job in the mountains this year. Snowboard all day, yeeeeah.

Dope style… something about this kid reminds me of the jib innovators from back in the day, like Jeremy Jones/JP Walker circa 10 years ago. Still, Aaron Biitner has the bests jib parts imho.

That first rail.

oh em eff gee.

So fucking hype I can’t stop posting in this thread.

:frowning:

Haven’t been able to get any work done today… just thinking about how good it’s gonna feel to pull into the parking lot at Northstar. And then go pick up my pass. And then go sit my ass on one of the lifts for the first time this season and think “home sweet home.”

Just literally got back from Mt High. It was not a good day to ride, only 2 lifts open, and EVERYBODY crowded the express lift. The lift itself was moving at a snails pace.

Ive been boarding for a few years now, still not that great at it. I want to start doing jumps/jibs/parks. I need to break my old habits first, i thought myself how to board but i developed some crappy habits. I got a new 07/08 Capita Black Death Inc, and rode that the first time today, I love how the board moves and feels, has a good pop to it. Now i need to get new bindings, im leaning towards the Union Force but i am unsure at the moment.

yeah bear mountain is my spot. i had pass last year, but all of my friends bailed on me and didn’t get one also. i broke a little past even though. no pass this year sadly, been too caught up in school to get a job to save up for a pass

… that was amazing

i wish i could jib like that

what’s up my fellow san dieagan. mt high is always so crowded, i never get good vibes from that place. you must have went on a weekend?

question guys. my board is 163. yeah you read right, 163. it is beastly. my biggest strength is my riding, i can kill any slope, double black diamond, whatever. i can hit jumps and do some spins, but my weakness is my jibbing. i can 50/50 most boxes, some rails, and i fs boardslided a car obstacle once by accident.

do i need to tune my board, as in file down the edges to be able to do crazy board slides and presses and stuff? when i see people butter across boxes doing like 720’s, i feel like that’s impossible for me to do with my colossal edge having board.

i want to tune my board, but i don’t want it to affect my carving/ riding, which i know it will. what’s your guys taking on tuning, is it easy? does it affect your carving a lot?

You need to buy a shorter board. Like, 148. Not even kidding. Don’t waste your time and effort and certainly don’t waste your board. Jibbing destroys boards. You will slam a lot, and even if you didn’t
it’s still an abusive riding style. You are thinking of detuning, which is simply rounding off your edges. My advice, buy an older ‘jib’ board and go to town. It won’t be stupid expensive and you won’t feel bad about destroying it. Most hardcore heads, for any type of riding really, are on board flow or at least pro form. For the rest of us, it’s not so easy.

damnit. then to craigs list i go.

Yeah a shorter board will definately benefit on the jibbing. You can flex it easier, spin faster and pop better. What is your height?

I’m 5’9, and I used to ride boards ranging from 154cm to 156cm. But then last season I started riding 151’s and holy crap did that improve my riding. I started spinning faster, popping higher and felt more versatile. It sucks riding the pow even with the bindings set back but I’m a park rat by heart so I’ll take the shorter board over longer ones unless I’m hitting up big mountain riding.

I went yesterday for the first time this season. I really don’t like mtn high all together. I just go because its close and less of a commitment than Big Bear. With Mtn High, its an easy drive and I can get there and leave from their easily all in the same day.

Even though I just bought my board a few weeks ago, I think next season I’m going to get a smaller board and hit the park. But its hard cuz the small boards aren’t wide enough for me. I wear a size 11 boot. Even the wide version of the smaller boards might not work for me.

damnit i wish i had a small board. i’m 5’11, 163 board. X_X

my brother rides a 157 wide with no problems, he’s 6’3 size 13 boot

I would suggest going to atleast a 155 and see how that feels. Demo boards are the way to go btw if you want to try something new, as demo boards are this season line ups and can really give you an idea of how they ride instead of crappy rentals. Then agian the burton LTR boards are fun as fuck, the edges are mellow and true twin, too bad I’m banned from using the shop’s rentals due to jibbing the shit out of a 153 acouple seasons ago.

i wish i had a sick short board T_T. i’m too afraid to buy a cheap on on craigslist. one of my buddies snapped the tail on a craigslist board last year riding the bunny slopes

For a jib board, I would go with way shorter… I weight 175ish lbs and I ride a 152 - that’s on the SUPER short side, but I like not having to swing too much around for rails (I’m always super afraid of the nose/tail hitting the part underneath and then eating shit).

Height means nothing when it comes to board length… after all, the board doesn’t know how tall you are; what matters to it is how much weight you have to push it around with.

How much do you weigh? That’s a pretty good place to start for figuring out how long of a board you should be rocking for jibbing.

Tuning is all about personal preference. As far as the tuning goes, I do it all myself… that way you have complete control of the finished product. It’ll take a while to get it right (if you have an old shitty board you don’t really care about to practice on, it helps), but when you do… it’s totally worth it. If you don’t wanna go that route, the guys at Leroys up in Big Bear are pretty on-point with the tuning… just tell them what you want and they’ll do it for you.

Those guys you see spinning 720 on a box, chances are pretty good their edges are totally detuned or have raised edges - or both. If you wanna go that route, it’s easy… just take a file to the edge and have at it, then smooth it out with a gummy stone.

Come 50% off sale time, look into the Nitro T1 Wide - sounds perfect for what you need. It’s not super wide like most wide boards, but it’s wide enough for a size 11 boot (I’m size 11 too).

A few more days tell the local mountain opens up! and then a couple after that tell I start my kush job at the snowboard shop. It’s almost like another universe opens up and everything is gravy again.

interesting. i’m like 140. does having a board with detuned edges affect your riding? are you not able to make strong carves? or grab onto an edge on a sketchy landing?

I’ve never liked Mt High all the much. It is convenient though since they have night boarding, so I can just do a 45 min-1 hr drive there, board for a couple hours and drive home. The place itself is so small without having the east mountain open, so doing the same couple runs and hitting the same jumps over and over gets boring.

Waiting for the Mammoth season to fully kick off. Planning a trip come December, hoping I luck out again like last year when there was a big blizzard the first day I got there.

Yeah dude, the more you mellow out your edges, the less edge response you are going to get while carving, though on rails and boxes, you will have less of a chance of catching and edge and eating it.

5’11 and 140 lbs… I would strongly suggest to try a 155cm and if you really want to see how jibby you can get, get a true twin instead of directional or twin directional unless you have specific preference.

yeah, i’ve been sifting through craigslist. sent some emails out for some small 50-80$ boards, but i dunno. i think i’m just gonna keep trucking on my 162-3 and stick to the 50-50’s.

eating crap on a rail skating hurts, i could only imagine how bad it would be on a snowboard.

one time i was hitting an up down box, with a rise in the box when it started to go down, so you have to ollie to get on the down portion. i hit it too fast, and my nose hit the rise, and i took like a 6 foot fall straight onto my upper back/lower neck. it was all ice too. that was one for the books…
