In 2D SS games, amount of colors/animation used in backgrounds is usually inverse to the amount of characters in game, I assume its due to meg size.
I must say I strongly disagree with the OP. Fatal Fury Special and Samurai Shodown 2 are two of SNK’s best classic fighters, and Mark of the Wolves and KOF 98:UM are are also some of their best. Metal Slug 3 is the best Metal Slug. NGBC and KOF 2002:UM are also excellent fighters and fine additions to their online XBL library.
They just need to improve the netcode. I know it’s been said a thousand times before, but it’s still true.
On the topic of why SNK is snubbing the PSN store, I’m certain it has nothing to do with Sony’s 2D policies or SNK’s disdain for Sony. Sony just has a different financial arrangement for releasing games on their online store, and it’s not as friendly to developers. I can’t find the details at the moment, but I remember reading that it was the cause of some multiplatform (XBL + PSN) releases cost more on the PSN.
That’s too bad. Maybe they could release 98UM and 2K2UM on disc for maybe $25 for PS3?
Dunno what you’re talking about. When it comes to visuals (and imo to gameplay as well) SNK games of the mid-late '90s wiped the floor with every other fighter out there, Capcom’s included.
I really don’t get what you mean. Samurai Spirits 3 and 4 had extremely crisp and colorful graphics, even if they were more dark and serious than 1 and 2.
5 and 5 Special are another story, though - they look indeed washed out to an extent. That’s because SNK used pre-rendered backgrounds due to the massive amount of characters and not enough memory on the cartridges. Same for the (Neo Geo-)KoFs after '99.
Sony wants some exclusives, that is understandable, but what is also understandable is the fact that developers see multiplatform as a way to make more money out of a title. The reason why Sony is being a prick about their 2D rule to SNK is because they want some exclusive titles out of them(at their pricing), but SNK wants to make bargain titles for console, so they split ways.
They are good games, but if you also have a PS2 or Wii, there’s no reason to get them on XBLA when you can get them on the anthology collection along with all the other games in their franchises. However, I just think that Real Bout Special and V Special would’ve been better choices instead.
As for the upcoming 2002UM, before it comes out on XBLA, I just hope they’ll release it for the PS2 in the US, cause they already did that with 98UM.
I just don’t understand why they aren’t releasing them on PSN also.
The controller is WAY better for fighters anyhow.
This is a really weird thing to say, to me. Samurai Shodown 3 and 4 looked very nice indeed, in my eyes, and VI looked pixely and washed out, ala Capcom Fighting Jam.
Different strokes I guess, I never really liked the PS2’s controller layout for fighting games.
how the fuck do you play with the 360 controller, that thing is shit. PS2 controller is just a revamped SNES controller which means it should feel better. But diffrenet strokes.
No way dude. the SNES controller had a better D-pad. Diagonals on a PS2/3 pad is a bitch. PS1 pad (without the dual analog stick) is a revamped SNES controller.
samsho 5 special is a great game, i played it on 2df and with a friend for years. IMO it has wonderful graphics, probably on par with A2/A3 quality-wise. it also has exceptional gameplay, and while i was probably never a high-level player, the game seems pretty balanced to me.
it’s a shame that it will never get a big audience.
Theoretically it can get online audience of any size, if someday people will suddenly become interested in a balanced fighter with big cast.
Also while it has balance, it also has a learning curve, and since most people havent passed it, they will scream how Mina/Sogetsu/insert random char here are cheap, etc.
I think most non-asian newcomers on 2DF ragequitted SS5sp more often than SS4
Because Yuki and Ai suck
why do people want these games on PSN again?
From what I remember, companies have to pay for bandwidth costs for downloadables released on 3SP, while that isn’t the case for the Box.
Uhhh GAROU: MOTW, 'NUFF SAID
And to join the party talking about their re-releases, I thought they did a wonderful job with the Orochi Saga. I have it on PSP and play that shit before I go to sleep in my bed allll the time! It’s the last line of defense for playing fighting games lol
Fixed
I do agree that their PS2 collections/etc are solid, but The Orochi Saga is horrible (can’t say anything about PSP version). There is some really weird lag in all the games in the collection that happens at random. If you really want to play 94-98 on PS2 get the following: 94 Rebout, Orochi Hen (95-97), and 98 UM.
Seriously, SNKP needs to release SSVS on other consoles. Better yet, make a UM version.
I think a SS V SP UM (that’s a fuckin’ mouthful) could work, but I doubt it would ever happen because: Samurai Shodown is nowhere near the popularity of KOF, and it doesn’t have that cross over appeal that the Garou franchise has. And SS 6 all ready kinda’ was an UM title. The UM series was basically ‘throw everything and the kitchen sink into this’ kind of game, with almost every character that ever appeared in the series, with every fighting style in every game, and featuring a few new ones. However, it did lack gore, and aesthetically it didn’t ‘feel’ like an SS game. It was too bland, the stages and music didn’t help either.
A brand new 2D game could work. I think a 3D game could work too, so long as they don’t try to imitate Soul Calibur which was the primary flaw (aside from balance) with Sen. SS should not be about juggles or combos, it’s all about patience and strategy, and getting that one devastating hit in that changes the flow of the match.
I would love to see their Handheld NGPC fighting games ported to other handhelds. Not remakes because card fighters clash makes me cry.
