Snake Eyez Takes It!

Just a couple of random things in no particular order…

  1. I think Tokido won an AE tourney at EVO not ST. (with CE Dictator) Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

  2. Damdai is a smart guy. I know he mentioned how good Zangief was prior to EVO and Snake Eyes proved him right. Obviously, selecting a character does not guarantee victory but I think Damdai’s point was that because of Zangief’s buffs and easier inputs, Snake Eyes was able to do things in HDR that maybe he could not get away with in ST. So IMO, I think the real story here is that Zangief is not as “low tier” in HDR as many think he is. He already had the tools in ST to deal with Ryu and Balrog but HDR really helped him out even more. Before I get some cats that say well… why were they not more Gief players in the top 32, 16, 8, etc… IMO I think the Gief players that were there were probably players that migrated from ST and never truly adapted and took advantage of all of Gief’s new buffs like Snake Eyes did. Also, Zangief just isn’t as popular or flashy a character so that will also dictate numbers.

  3. Regardless of which side of the argument you are on ST or HDR don’t be an @ss and blindly defend one over the other without first taking the time to truly understand what’s involved. Some of the posts I see from players I really like surprise me. There is some truth to what Damdai says regardless if you agree or not. I don’t know if I would have crapped on HDR like he did but I think I know what he was trying to say.

  4. Strictly from an HDR perspective Snake Eyes deserves mad props. He won the largest HDR tournament since last year’s EVO with some of the best comp in the world. You can’t sneeze at that.

  5. I’m sorry but we cannot compare Snake Eyes YET to Jodim. Only because Jodim also owns just as much in ST as he does in HDR.

  6. The coolest thing of all is that here we are talking about HDR long after it’s release and we have a passion for it. That’s COOL.

I was 9th with only zangief, decoy.

Valle and Cole were my losses, close games.

Snakeeyez is just better than me :).

Tokido won with Vega in ST at EVO 2007.

i could be wrong also, but i don’t think anyone has ever won evo using dictator-bison. the only evo when AE was used, i think 1 of the wolfe brothers won (?). i’m almost positive tokido has won an st evo with vega

The Annual Playa Hatas Award Goes To…

Here’s The Recap In case anyone is just now tuning in…
Some ST players (not mentioning any names here) have been walking way too long with this little girl…

ST + Throwing Salt = HD Remix

HDR Haters, please continue on with the salt, please!

Someone please sticky this thread…it’s too funny!

You deserve a slap on the dick for this terrible post.

Reading that makes me sad, because HF is deserving of a lot more attention than a lot of the shit people are playing nowadays.

See the thing is, HDR is just a massive step back from ST, plain and simple, it is absolutely inferior. If you think WW is a better game than CE then… you’re dumb. But when you compare HF and CE you can’t outright say one is absolutely better, they are just different (though I prefer HF). Sure HF is more balanced but a lot of people prefer the slow game speed of CE. ST has supers but that doesn’t make the game stupid compared to HF, they are just very much different. HDR is just a dumbed down version of ST, plain and simple, it offers nothing new to the table and it was designed by some idiot who thinks T.Hawk’s command grab should have a whiff animation, ryu should have a fake fireball, cammy’s j.mp should be nerfed to help top tier dhalsim, Sagat should be able to juggle three tiger knees, and that the SPD should be a HCB motion, etc. etc. etc.

One of the fun things about ST is its execution barrier, it makes learning a character and using their tools effectively really fun, ST Zangief is incredibly satisfying to play because he’s hard to use, when you get in and land that SPD you earned it, that’s not something I can say about HDR when its designer deliberately changing everything to make the game easy for you.

Don’t you value that?

If you think hdr is that much of a step back please leave and never come back thanks

I’d just like to point out a few things. SPD is not HCB, the new motion is HCB+F. This same new motion may be easier to do, but it is slower than the old motion so I don’t see how that is a buff or a problem (rotating 270 degrees in a continuous motion is more natural and efficient than HCB+F). All it does is let people who are bad at doing the old motion do walk up SPD’s more consistently. I don’t see how the larger input windows are a problem since doing them as fast as possible is what the pro ST Zangiefs do anyway.

I also find it funny how anyone would rather play vs O Sagat than HDR Gief. I hope they really just mean “I’d rather play ST” because O Sagat is nowhere near as dominant as HDR Zangief.

wow, why would anyone spend so much time and energy to harp on a game nobody plays? i think there may be like six of us left. you’d get a larger and more gratifying response if you go over to the sf4 forums.

Wtf is going on in here???

You know what? These last anti-HDR posts are disgusting and insulting to all who play HDR. This really has nothing to do with the forgiving motion inputs on Gief or in HDR in general nor does it has to do with how supposedly inferior HDR is to ST. This is hatred for pad players, plain and simple! No one in history has swept through a major SF tournament and used a pad, it’s like a huge slap in the face for any serious longtime SF tournament players. I mean, it’s like Dee Brown from the Celtics winning a slam dunk contest because he pumped up his Reebok Pump to win the 1991 Slam Dunk contest. I mean pure baby zone shit, right? I even made my opinion known over 19 years ago that I thought it was stupid that he was use the pump to his advantage and again to this day looking back, I believe the pump was fawking retarded. I mean, i would have rather seen o.Dee Brown dunk in the contest without the pumps than the Reebok edition Dee Brown that we were left to see afterwards. I mean him combined with the Reebok Pump, IMO is just stupid!

Now come and let us worship other Bottom Tier Chart Gods ye knoweth not of!

congratulations are in order, supreme performance SnakeEyes!

For the record the half circle back, then press forward motion is totally slower than half circle back, up and back like we’ve been doing for years.
So the new motion *is *stupid, and I’m pretty sure Snake Eyes uses 270’s.

I consider being able to focus less on HOW to do my moves and focus more about WHEN and WHERE to do my moves as fun, myself (which was the point of HDR).

This is coming from an SSBM player who was pretty good at that whole L-canceling bit btw.

Yeah Kemp should have won…
Kemp Sonics = Gief HDR
Kemp “coked up” Cavs = Gief ST

I got my mom to buy those $120 reebok pump shoes back in 91. Everyone wanted to pump them…I mean yeah middle school girls would go down on their knees begging, can i pump them please…It was great until people would over pump them & the air pocket got all deformed. Still it was great while it lasted…As for the Catapult, not so much hahah, i got Malowned…

Many have said and felt this for years now. (It is no secret) I have echo’ed that sentiment from day one. In between some smiles and laughs, Sirlin himself said I was the biggest hater of HDR on the forums at EVO '09 to my face.

However, Sirlin’s preference in design was to make a user friendly game that could attract a more casual gamer and increase the interest in the older CPS1/2 type SF game, and HDR did do that.

Honestly, ST is my favorite SF ever, period. I miss playing it. I could play it all day. I would be the first in line to support changes in the community to make ?Classic? HDR the standard. But the majority of the scene supports standard HDR, and to be honest over the last year and half I have had a lot of fun playing it. Over the last three months I have stopped and have been playing SS4, but HDR was fun while it lasted. (For me)

We all have our preference on which version we prefer. Many here REALLY enjoy HDR. But, I love ST and I say it every chance I get.

I think the reason you dont see this occuring is cause people dont want to play ST when playing HDR.

Anyway, Damdai’s comments are super hilarious. I remember seeing his Akuma rape shit and making HDR tournaments look free. But that is no way even slightly comparable to Zangief. Matter of fact, I dont even see how he can say he’d rather play O.Sagat or Vega in ST (methinks its either him over-reacting or just another way of saying “I’d just rather play ST” and not an accurate assessment of balance issues). I specifically remember Damdai picking Zangief against Afrolegends’ Rog last year’s Evo during the HDR finals and we all know how that worked out

Insert obligatory “hater’s gonna hate” gif. SnakeEyez is just REALLY REALLY good. And its REALLY amazing that a player who’s only entered one major tournament before in his life wrecked house at the largest HDR tournament of the year.

And seriously, there’s an ST sub-forum on SRK. It gets no love, people (the ones who really really like ST anyway) should use it.

(PS for abel being so fucking retarded in SSF4, not one made top 8. Meanwhile, 4 Ryu’s made top 8 in HDR. I guess he’s just a really popular character :looney:)

…the SPD motion argument is particularly baffling - as if the execution requirement is any more than 4 hours from becoming trivial either way!

Meanwhile, Snake Eyez can ToD. Sirlin must have made 1f links more forgiving, too… perhaps he dilated time itself?

A couple of more random things:

  1. None of the Japanese players at EVO play HDR.

  2. A lot of the old-school players either hate HDR, don’t play it except for big tournaments or have just moved on to IV. So the “new blood” (Snake Eyez/DGV) not surprisingly are taking over. (Not that it might not have happened anyway but I think it plays a big factor)

  3. It seems to me that the “new blood” tends not to counterpick like old school normally did. Part of this may be credited to HDR’s better balance - most of the lopsided matches in ST are more winnable now so they have more confidence with sticking with their main character.

  4. I don’t get the big issue with pad player vs stick player. And I never get the impression that old school players are bitter over a pad player winning EVO. It’s all a preference and just whatever controller type you learned to play on. Personally, I marvel at Snake Eyez’s execution regardless of what he plays on but at the same time I realize that there are (some) ST Zangief players who can pull off the same type of execution as well.
