Yeah, basically, people respond with “Ugh, not all Japanese women are like that, this movie is a huge fuck-up,” when, really, they’re the ones assuming it’s meant to be universal instead of indicative of a specific subculture or, for that matter, a portrait of a single individual. Not every person in every film is supposed to be representative of the entirety of their demographics.
cosnidering he got sued by his informent for name dropping her, no im not.
You on the other hand are doing a fantastic job of showing you have no idea wtf you are talking about.
Part of the reason for the suit was that she felt he reflected her experiences inaccurately; she notes that no-one ever bid on her virginity and many of the experiences framed negatively in the novel were positive in her own life. Basically, it’s like he wrote a kind of tawdry, maudlin version of her life. So, on the one hand, the accuracy is there in the too-direct parallels, but on the other he turned real experiences into cheap melodrama.
Again, the real issue is not with the work, but with those who expect it to be indicative of anything beyond a single character’s experience. It’s not necessarily reflective of Japanese women or even of life as a geiko, and really shouldn’t be taken as such.
I don’t mean to say anything about whether or not it’s shitty, just that the misconceptions it’s started aren’t really its own fault. People could come to similar misconceptions from Iwasaki Mineko’s actual autobiography or Sayonara or whatever else if they’re just going to go into it assuming that every single lady born between Turkey and the Pacific ocean conforms exactly to the portrayal of the book or film’s central character.
Nah its true, i do make her do overtime…She’s a hard worker…I feel bad sometimes when she ask me to mow the lawn & i dont do it. She has to nag me for it as that is one thing she doesn’t do is lawn work or take out the trash. She doesn’t mind doing the rest, she loves to clean, cook, & lots n lots of sexy time. I dont know where she gets the energy.
Rcaido sounds like what you would expect Hugh Hefner to be like, if he only had the 1 hoe and probably pimped her out a lot. Bet the motherfucker wears a housecoat too.
so you think that b/c someone that doesn’t know anything about japan except for what they get from movies/books, watches 5 mins of those documentaries, is unable to make the contrast in how different the reality is from what’s romantacized?
