Well yes, most characters mismatches can be overcome by freakish skill. I suppose being far superior to your opponent allows you more leeway when selecting characters.
As for being effective with everybody, that’s mostly true with Super Smash. However some games have such one-sided match-ups that someone can play PERFECTLY and still lose. MvC2 has a number of such match-ups.
Kaistar… no offense bud, but if I’ve never heard of you, you probably can’t compete at the Elite 5’s biweekly’s. I’d put money on Arash’s Bowser crushing any character you brought. But if you think you can compete you should come to MLG SanFran in Febuary or later in the year when we do San Diego or Las Vegas. There will be LOTS of smashers there playing to win. You’ll really get a feel for how good you might be.
As for the tiers thing in smash… the game has a lot more to do with mind games (Yomi) than the tiers, but they do have an effect. I’ve seen a high-mid level Peach defeat Isai’s Captain Falcon just by being patient. The matchup is no good for Falcon. Not at all. That’s why Isai switches to Sheik against Peach’s but won’t play Sheik any other time.
Seriously… we’re gonna have 2D fighters as a side event in SanFran, so even if you’re not a smasher, you should come to MLG San Fran. Play in the side events and watch smash, or play both. It’ll be a good experience.
i know top tier is Shiek, Fox, and Marth in that order, then 2nd is Peach, C. Falcon, Jigglypuff, Gannodorf and Samus(not in that order)
I play Jigglypuff, and the easiest match-up I seem to have is Marth, cause he’s the one I face the most. I can’t really beat Fox or Peach with himm, tho. This is probably not a good place to ask, but can anybody link me to some match anaylisis to those particular match-ups? I haven’t even faced shiek before, either…
O yeah, and I’m familiar with most of the advanced techniques and stuff, I’ve been playing smash for almost half a year now.

Seen those vids, those vids have got me to step my game up. However, I will still use Mario as I LOVE his cape. that move has saved me countless times as well as stuff most of my opponents recoveries! :badboy:
You might see me at maybe San Diego, because SanFran and Vegas are too far out of the loop for me. I’m not gonna say I can actually go out and win the whole damn thing, I know I’m not that good, but I’m thinking I’m decent enough to at least give them a run for their money, and maybe win a high-mid tourney or two.
It’s all about knowing the match-up. MvC2 might be the one exception to this rule. But then again, I can beast pretty well with Ryu/Sakura/Ken. :nunchuck:

Anyways it seems SSBM is taking over S.FL, everybody plays SSBM around here since our local arcades (minus Boomers) has closed down.:sad: Samus is my best character, I suck with Shiek, Fox, and Marth (in comparison). SEX KICK!!! 
Tiering, I think, depends on a lot of things. For instance, you have tiers in Guilty Gear X2#Reload, but as anyone can tell you the tiers move around all the damn time for that game. Didn’t Faust win some tourneys a few months ago, or was that just a rumor?
In a game like 3rd Strike. the tiers represent ease of use. It’s easier tom play Ken/Yun/Chun at high level play than, say, Hugo or Makoto. Can Hugo and Makoto beat the tar out of Ken, Yun, and Chun-li? Yes, but they have a rougher time of it. Besides the stupendously low tier (Sean/Twelve/Necro) 3S is one of the most balanced games out there. Me, I want to see if a high level Hugo can rock JWong’s Chun-Li or Daigo’s Ken at this year’s Evo. Probably won’t happen, but it would be awesome to see.
Smash Bros, in my opinion, has a very weird tier structure. You have characters that are incredibly good in the right hands and are thusly top tier, but they can be taken down by the proper counter character. I don’t care for Smash Bros. Melee (after like, fifteen years of QCF motions, I need them like I need a controller) that much, but I recgonize there’s a lot there for people into it.

Tiering has an effect in all fighting games, but it’s all about who has matchup knowledge.

well if you do, hop by Zero Ping… Garantee that all smashers there are good… we trained with one of the top smashers (Cloud strife X a.k.a Cloudken of srk).

Tiering in SSBM goes by ease of use too. All the characters hhave something cheap about them.
Like marth’s invincible sword
Luigi having 7 quick killer attacks and sex kick and sweetspot dair spike.
Jigglypuff’s invincicle sleep and wall of pain
Roy’s infinate and up-smash combo sweetspot spike
Mario’s cape fair and sexkick(co-co-co-combo breaker!)
Doc’s pills and f-smash and fair
Mewtwo’s aerial instant kill 2 perfect priority attacks one of those attacks he’s invincible in and has the same priority as a grab(because it is one and teleport “free” win on final destination against most characters

Damn I hate it when people bitch about tiers. Tiers are characters that the fighting game comunity finds as good. What I’ve noticed about the people who bitch about tiers is that there the people who cant beat anybody even with top tiers. So they learn low tiers so they have an excuse.
Then they claim that tiers are no fun and if you use them then you dont know what the game is about. Shiet!!! In CvS2 I use A-Sakura and Bison, Cammy, Sagat, Blanka, chun etc. and I’m fuckin’ addicted. In MvC2 I use Magz, storm, Sent, Cable and Psylocke and I’ve been playing that shit for 5 years and I still love it. 3s is the same case. People need to stop whining about tiers in any game. Low tiers are no fun. Mid tiers are great but I find it imposible to play Marvel with fuckin servbot or CvS with Kyosuke.
My point is that tiers balance a game out somewhat. CvS is pretty balanced considering you can win with mid-tier. I do think that MvC2 is broken because it consists of 4 characters mainly. If there were no tiers then people wouldnt bother getting into depth about a game. If there were no tiers then I wouldnt play fighting games. Not because I need them, but because there an element to the game that if you take away then your left with a scrub game to play simply pass the time. I didnt post this to discuss Smash bros cause I dont know shit about it or play it, but I’m just tired of hearing newbs who bitch about tiers.
hehe… don’t get me wrong, cause CSX is a good guy, but he’s not top tier in Smash. He’s gotta show up and dominate a bigger tournament before any places him that high. What’s his biggest tournament win so far? What’s his highest placing at a national event? I know the kid is good, but a “top smasher” he is not.
But yeah, anyone in florida should check out Zero Ping cause that’s a real active community. Hopefully all you florida peeps will show up for MLG Orlando in April!
