Smash Brothers - winning formula no one uses?

It’s like a sexy smack in the face…

Like when you lay some game down on a girl only to get slapped in the face and are then subsequently “raped” by her.

Life sure is hard sometimes…

I agree,

smash is not a real fighting game and its a pretty shitty boring game.

hell metal gear, double dragon, GTA, I can go on for weeks on random games that has fighting in it.

But oh well, that’s americans for you, always want something easy,so that they can say they have skills.

Pitt fighter > smash

A little crude but overall I agree more every day with the new infinites and such found

But, Melee still is one of the best fighters in a long long time with the huge amount of depth it has thanks for techniques like wave dashing and the huge emphasis on mind games (more so than any other game IMO)

Sakurai’s problem is that while Melee was accidentally great, from now on the series is just going to be lacking at best since Sakurai wants to make a game where everyone can win (he lost a lot as a child), which will kill the series for hardcore players where it stands, and as it goes on

QFT.

execution does not equal depth

think of sirlin’s whole idea with hd remix - making motions easier or sometimes outright changing them to accommodate pad players. st is just as deep this way, the only difference is that more people will be able to get past the execution barriers and actually start playing the game

if anything melee had less depth since it was so heavily skewed toward offense.

but even on srk most people are still stuck in the mindset of “RUSHDOWN GOOD, TURTLING BAD”, so whatever

Melee had so much to offer in terms of depth that by direct comparion, Brawl is Tekken 4 to Melee’s Tekken 5DR. Oh and it isn’t so much that turtling is bad but…thats kind of all there is to it. With such simplfied gameplay all u really need is a char with a good projectile to spam and thats it, and if u dont think thats the case look at what ever top player is saying about brawl.

I seriously got better at Nemesis after playing Brawl.
Some of the techniques you us in Nemisis are very similar to brawl (e.i. short hopped lag cancel)

i just love listening to people say stuff like this, it’s loads of fun : )

let me guess, gonna say it’s because every char can double jump?

ok

to qualify as a “deep” game, imo, you need to offer as many different ways to win as possible. pixies locking each other in frame traps is fun for awhile, but it should be balanced out with grappling, long-range poking, fireball traps, and even runaway characters who want to run out the clock, among other things.

from my admittedly limited understanding, melee veered heavily in the frametrap pixie direction at the expense of everything else. i find it hard to believe brawl is more limited than that if this is true. remember, there is ALWAYS some sort of offensive mindgame in any fighter, even if it isn’t obvious at first. smashboards people do not understand this, so i’m not inclined to blindly trust their opinions.

Man its a fucking party game designed for that crowd, when kids get older and want to really challenge the big dogs, they’ll pop in a SF game.

This man speaks the truth

What are you talking about, if a game has a high learning curve I’d say it’s in depth.

Just because the game is highly offensive doesn’t mean that it sucks. That’s like saying MVC2, Alpha 3 and Guilty Gear aren’t in depth.

I think that what they did for the casual gamer is good, but I don’t want something else in that formula. If there were smash clones popping up everywhere, I’d feel like it would just be more of a slap to the faces of hardcore fighting gamers…

I would love to see a tribute (which is what smash is) to top teir fighters. Kinda like mugen, but executed well. A nice execution heavy practice rewarding fighter with all the crowd pleasers in it. I’m guessing that a game with so many broken fighters would be an American dream. Mags from mvc2 tri jump and everything vs eddie from ac with rc’s and frc’s and can build up a guardguage for more damage = beastly fighting. strider mvc1 vs baiken ac - meter vs guard points. Human smoke from mk tri vs akuma st. find something to replace 3d sidestep garbo so we can throw sophitia in the mix and she can hand nina tekken 5 an ass kickin like she never had. Hell, throw in marth from melee and let him fight that retardedly strong goku from budokai. I know that a game like that would be broken as hell, but don’t we deserve a fan service at least once. Hell, with so much broken stuff available to each character, I’d have to say that the teirs would be more like accent core, where every character can pretty much dominate another, exept baiken, but at least this game would have a runaway storm lol…

Geez, all the effort and practice we put in, and we get the short end of the stick for pansy quitters because there are more of them than us… I hope something super gay gets discovered in brawl and you need to practice three years before you are considered average… LMAO, that would be great…

game having a high learning curve because there’s several strategies to wrap your head around != having a high learning curve because you need to train your muscle memory for it

I’d argue in agreement on this. In theory, a Smash-like game with tighter controls/physics could be great for bringing in new players but it would face an uphill battle since tradional fighting game fans would never give it the time of the day while it would get only so much attention from casual fans if it weren’t from a licensed property. It’s a shame since there are things that could be improved with Smash’s engine. One concept concerning items could be taken from Power Stone. Items have to fully materialize and have to be picked up by the grab button instead of the attack button allowing for more control over how things flow in a match–simultaneous fixing both the problem of items spawning “in your hands” and accidentaly punching explosives. The other brings about the frightening concept that Mortal Kombat Did It Better than Smash with items since stage weapons were in stationary places that could be actively sought out or camped against in prevention of letting the opponent get it. Custom Robo does better with dangerous environemnts since you can plan to avoid/utilize them due to their stationary nature.

This man speaks the fucking truth.

If it is a good enough game, then it won’t matter.

At one time, arcade versus fighters were seen as Street Fighter clones. Should everyone just quit at that point? 3D fighters would be compared to VF, then Tekken, then Soul Calibur. Various FPS were described as Doom clones, Half-Life clones, and are still being called Halo clones. Some of these games are actually decent, some build a fanbase of their own, and a few may become popular enough to become the next comparison themselves.

Besides, even a fraction of Smash’s sales and popularity could be profitable.

EDIT: Maybe Capcom could be helped if they did a Smash clone Pocket Fighters-style. Get their SF characters in there with their other franchises and expose them all to a potentially different audience. At least if it were a decent game, better than Red Hot Rumble and Onimusha. A higher profile bad Smash clone would only damage them.

we are the fighting game community

i certainly will not play a shitty game just because there’s “competition” (read: thousands of idiots) for a game

tl;dr people gotta grow a set and play some dat SF

see i agree BUT there is something that people like you & magus are forgetting here

smashers tend to be complete and utter one-dimensional fanboys. that is, only owning nintendo consoles and treating this just as seriously as, say, not supporting ron paul because of his vote on darfur.

once you realize this, everything else makes sense. people wonder why they make up all their gay rules and try to make smash into SF, but this explains it: thanks to that mindset, they don’t have access to SF, so their gimped smash is the closest they can get!

I thought most top smash guys are saying snake and metaknight are godly, and snake doesn’t have that great a projectile
