The races are pretty ambiguous in my opinion, and if Bella is a white girl then I don’t want to see those tan lines. You could also easily argue that Fillia is asian.
oh my. . . that body. . . I. . don’t know . . where to even start.
In cases like that you look at the physical features. These characters predominantly seem to have Caucasian features. It’s possible that Cerebella is supposed to depict someone that is Hispanic as she seems to have gotten darker from earlier character art. Reading the latest blog post though, Alex, made it a point that the nature of a character should be instantly apparent from looking at them, like the comparison with Kos-Mos and Aegis.
I watch plenty of anime, read plenty of manga, and play plenty of video games. I know the score. I honestly have come not to expect a miraculous amount of racial diversity from Japan. Heck even with a lot of mainstream Western games it’s become a matter of what grizzled white space marine/wise cracking adventurer/soldier/knight will I play in this game.
Skullgirls is an indie game developed in the US that is striving to be unique. Despite this, it still seems to have fallen into having a practically all white cast.
are we seriously having a racism discussion about skullgirls when you have shit like t hawk+el fuerte, juri+choi+hwoarang (every korean in a japanese fighting game is a criminal or evil nearly), that dude from kof that attacks with basketballs, rufus+ken (all white americans are either fat rednecks or rich douchebags), fucking mudman, blanka, dhalsim
I’m not mad nor did I say the developers are racist. I’m simply pointing out the fact that for a game that is striving to be unique and have distinct character designs, nearly all the characters designed for this game still end up being white.
They’re not trying to be unique. You’re referring to a blog where the guy talks about the silhouette principle and doesn’t use good examples. Instead, he begins with stoic derivative Japanese designs that don’t adhere to it. Probably does this because he’s weeaboo. He has two pictured western examples and in the second he compares movie Juggernaut to regular everyday Juggernaut and credits the design to Capcom. Shameful weeaboo.
I’m surprise any one can tell these characters races, but I do hope for some diversity. Skull girls designed doesn’t stray far away from current mainstream Japanese anime. and with that culture, i have no diversity expectations.
I’m curious about this as well. I don’t watch anime so my experience may already be worthless, but I haven’t seen anything that looks remotely like Skullgirls.
Looking like anime? Hmm, closest anime I would make a comparison to is either FLCL or Panty & Stocking. Either way, discussion is starting to get ridiculous. Whoooooooo caaaaaaaaares.
There isn’t any anime that looks like Skullgirls. You can see the influences from Japanese games and whatnot, but ultimately it all has a cartoony feel.
And jesus, racial issues in a fuckin’ Skullgirls thread of all things…sometimes, man…sometimes…
