pretty pumped for PC version, my girlfriend has a PC and wants to pick up SG once its out on steam, will be a fun thing to do together
So many more people will start playing with the pc port. Too bad 360 wont get that crossplay like ps3. Is it simply impossible, or what? Anyway, everyone on pc will start playing, then everyone already on ps3 will come back, and then some of those who arent SG OGs will start showing up as well.
from what I understand/remeber it was either steamworks or games for windows live. and they picked steamworks.
360 crossplay has a lot of issues tied to it.
- Requires GFWL which many people have voiced their opinion against it (for good reasons)
- Cross platform play between Xbox360 and PC was all but killed by Microsoft back in 2010 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/ms-killed-pc-xbox-cross-platform-play (rumors speculate that it was due to the fact that PC players had an “unfair advantage” and it led to console players getting wrecked in FPS/3rdPS games where aiming with a mouse and keyboard is 95% of the time better than a gamepad. but that seems like a stupid reason.)
- Cross platform play between PC and PS3 was only recently implemented and is still evolving unlike the xbox360. Chances are that being I believe the first 3rd Party title to implement cross platform play between PC and PS3 would make Valve all to happy to assist in any technical areas.
- The game was going to be released on Steam either way, so why not utilize Steamworks.
Also, Mike Z said that the game will use Steamworks for DRM type, but not for online system which is a mistery, there is a thread down here that someone that met a member of Reverge Labs and they said to him that the game will use Gamespy.
That seems like a pretty backwards choice, unless it somehow authenticates a Steam account with a Gamespy account. I recall Borderlands using Gamespy and people found out that it needed no authentication of the person owning the game so people started playing online with pirated versions.
Is it true? What a horrible way to enlarge playerbase… =/
…for a genre that exist only in its playerbase.
Well, it’s just a rumour. Someone may as well tell you that the game will use Starforce as DRM.
For the record, I was the poster mentioned above and was told Gamespy rather directly. I made it a point to talk to both Reverge Labs and Capcom about their PC support at EVO.
Steam does allow for “instant login” for some services that would otherwise require a separate account. Many of the F2P games require no registration and just use your steam account as your login. If you download the stand-alone client, you have to make an account as usual.
Steamworks games require the steam client for matchmaking. No Steamworks game is available for direct download from Origin for this reason. The fact that Skullgirls on Origin is thus the only confirmation you need that this is not a full Steamworks title. Other than Steamworks, GFWL, or your own proprietary matchmaking service, Gamespy is just about the only game in town.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1712878 games that utilize steamworks, games that only utilize steamworks in their Steam version are noted as “Only Steam Version”
Games that use Steamworks and are available on Origin as a direct download, this is hardly a complete list but here is a handful of titles:
Saints Row 3
Alan Wake
Hell Yeah Wrath of the Dead Rabbit
Darksiders 2
Jagged Alliance: Back in Action
Orcs Must Die 2
Sonic 4 Episode 2
Risen 2: Dark Waters
Binary Domain
Total War 2: Shogun
All of these titles REQUIRE steamworks for all versions. There are some titles like Max Payne 3 or Shank 2 that use Steamworks but only for the Steam version so purchasing the title from other outlets wont use Steam.
Also while I was performing my google-fu I found that a thread on the origin forums complaining about having to install Steam for games that are on Origin:
To clarify, I meant steam matchmaking since that was the question at hand. Of those titles you listed a large chunk are single player only, so not exactly what I was trying to get at.
I stand corrected on the no steamworks games on Origin piece however. Various online retailers sell codes reedemable on steam, but I had not seen anything to indicate there were any such titles on origin. I double checked on some recent flagship steamworks titles (like Borderlands 2) to make sure the “no steamworks matchmaking games on origin” thing was still accurate, but it looks like there are definitely a few exceptions that I missed.
Edit In response to below: I think I am still not making it clear the distinction I am trying to make, but would rather not clutter the thread with a back and forth on it. Suffice it to say that if Reverge decided to switch to Steamworks and it crossplays between Steam/Origin/PS3 just fine, that is just dandy by me.
As I stated, that was only a small handful of games.
Here is all of the multiplayer games on both origin and steam that utilize steamworks that I know of (note I’m only listing titles released in 2012, I don’t feel like wading through the 2011 and 2010 list of steam games and comparing them to origin.)
Binary Domain
Total War Shogun 2
Orcs Must Die 2
Wargame: European Escalation
Oil Rush
Confrontation
Sniper Elite V2
Spellforce 2: Faith in Destiny
Legends of Pegasus
London 2012: The official video game of the olympic games
Saints Row the Third
Company of Heroes 2*
Aliens: Colonial Marines*
*not out yet but confirmed to require steam and is available for preorder on Origin.
ALL of those games have online multiplayer, require steam, use steamworks, and can be purchased as a digital download on Origin. And that is only for 2012.
Edit in response to the above: I thought your distinction was that they don’t use Steamworks for matchmaking purposes. The games I listed are multiplayer using steamworks to run their multiplayer and require Steam to run but are purchasable on Origin. Isn’t that exactly what you said wasn’t done on Origin? Also you can purchase the physical copies (but not digital copies) of L4D1 and 2. Portal 1 and 2, The Orange box, and CS:Source through the EA Origin Store which is tied to your Origin account, and obviously (as they are Valve games) require Steam, and use steam for their multiplayer as well as in the case of Portal 2 and L4D1 and 2, their “matchmaking” services.
Now whether or not Skullgirls uses gamespy for their multiplayer on the PS3/PC crossplatform play I don’t know. However I was simply informing you that your information about Origin not selling or using Steamworks titles multiplayer or otherwise was incorrect.
Borderlands 2 was the only game you checked recently and it is not available on Origin, however if you had done your research you’d see that has NOTHING to do with Steamworks. Origin doesn’t sell ANY games published by 2K, regardless if they use Steamworks or not. You can’t buy Bioshock, or Darkness, or Spec-Ops, or XCom on Origin.
LOL, Gamefly changed the release date again
http://www.gamefly.co.uk/Download-Skullgirls/5004201/#.UG7Zwq5E6zs
11-30/2012 “Late November”.
I dont understand why the shops dont simple write “2012” if they dont know the official date which not exists, I know its a placeholder but they dont need to give fake release dates, for people who only visit the stores it feels like the game is having etenal delays.
In fairness, you don’t have to be a person who just visits the store to get that feeling ;p
srs note, I imagine having a month included in your launch estimate makes people more inclined to put down pre-orders.
another month… great -_- … i swear. im on the verge of buyin an xbox just to play this game
Just so we break this down…
- One guy at Reverge is responsible for the PC port
- PC ports require you test and adjust for multiple hardware configurations, unlike a console, which means extra cost/time over just porting the code raw(which obv. would still take non-trivial effort)
- The one guy responsible for the port has his hands tied until the upcoming patch is done with, because he’s also responsible for network code(and allowing US/EU crossplay to work is why the patch exists in the first place).
- The patch that has tied this guy’s hands up was recently submitted and will will ideally hit in two weeks.
- Some circumstances that Reverge can’t comment on have held up the aforementioned patch for months
- Ravidrath is hoping for the port to make it out this year, meaning that it is far from a certainty.
Be realistic, expect it to come out 2013, and if it comes earlier enjoy the pleasant surprise.
If one guy is responsible for the PC port, it will also have PC and netplay related bugs, so we may provide free beta testing as well.
Might as well wait another month after release before problems are sorted out.
At least they are excused, unlike Capcom’s PC attempts without any testing.
I dont understand a thing, why you say only one guy at Reverge is working at the PC port?, we know that the guy that can add lobbies in the console game is working on PC port but that does not mean he is the only one on charge for that.
I guess once the game is released, more staff will be moved to the PC version. Because priorities are the console versions right now.
Like Capcom’s more recent games, Skullgirls was developed on PC and then ported to consoles.
We will not get a port, just a conversion of the original game, allowing for better quality, unlike what occurred with Dark Souls.
So it will not be a big issue regarding the game’s graphics and sound. What will matter more are controls, Steam integration, optimization and network
Problem is that the PC version remains untested for the public, so a lot of bugs will emerge.
This requires a lot of resources and it is certain that a lot of issues will emerge after the launch date.
I hope that they’ll be allowed to release PC patches much sooner or at the same time, rather than wait for a console patch and appear on PC much later, thus breaking cross platform play
I’d say we wait for patch to release and if no official info on the patch status will appear, then we’ll ask Peter on current status at that point. I doubt it’ll be released before patch anyways.
