Skullgirls OTT! -Random select is top tier

Mildly fun story time. There’s a gaming club at my university that meets weekly. Most of the tvs get set up for marvel or P4A or whatever, but this week I got people to play Skullgirls, which was pretty fun. It’s really exciting to get to play people sitting next to you, even if it’s a casual setting.

Man, I haven’t played this game in a while though, dropping all my valentine combos :U

Yeah, there is one range where its like pretty impossible to tell what side he will land on.

His combos are good, but also his throw strings are sweet. If Cross up is blocked, you can do some crazy block strings like cr.jab~cr.Jab ~Cr.strong~sobat or max out, but you can also interrupt at any time and go for a throw. This makes his offense super dangerous against most characters.

His super is one of the better ones in the game, its like a toned down version of balrogs. Its really safe with tons of invincibility, so you can pretty much use it to punish anything, and even on block you are safe. You can also combo into it, and juggle into after an upkick.

Also, check out his cr. mp. The hitbox is deceivingly big. the thing is HUGE, so its a really good footsie tool that if you have charge you can hit confirm out of.

Oh holy fuck, you can combo into sobat from LK. I think my favorite normals so far are cl.LK, cHK, sHK, jMK, and jLP. His normals are just fun.

How do you combo into the super? Do I just need fast hands?

I think you can only combo into it on standing oppenents (not sure, but that’s what I remember someone saying once), I have only done it a few times. You can also follow up with forward or RH upkicks for extra damage AFTER the super. I usually use it as a pressure tool or a whiff punish, like if I am playing footsie and I think someone is going to press something, I throw it out. In ST, the super freeze actually eats all inputs, so your opponent can’t just do their own super right back, they generally have to block, so either I am right and I get a shit ton of damage or I get a lot of safe chip plus all of the momentum afterwards to set up some tricky offense.

His cr. mp is a lot like rose’s in alpha 2, if that means anything to you. basically since its so extended off of his own hurt boxes, you can do safe meaties on people’s wakeup again some characters. Like against Ryu, if you stay at the range where just the tip is landing meaty, if he does a reversal uppercut he whiffs. If he blocks, it hits and you can cancel in lp shot for added pressure.

Also because of its weird hit box (see how there is no hurtbox on his foot) it literally stuffs EVERYTHING in footsie. So like you can frame trap really safely, and then xx into a shot and then go for shenans.

St. mp is also a really good anti air, really fast and has a nice angle, and cr.mk is kind of hard to use but really good once you learn its ranges (fastest sweep in the game).

I’ve read about her c.MP being good before. My experience with the game is mostly just doing easy crossups with Sakuras j.MK against the cpu into her clkclkslk~sho cawmbo. I do like @2 from what I’ve played though.

I have a fall break this coming week, so I might well up the courage to get bodied in ST on GGPO (as well as a little more JoJo’s).

I wish I’ve been playing fighters longer though. :<

I HATE THESE FUCKING ADS.

I can’t navigate the forums. I can’t check my alerts. I can’t respond to PMs. What I CAN do is unwillingly give traffic to some company who likes to put women in drag in their ads without a close or collapse button AND with a video that autoplays.

FUCK THIS.

Yeah, I finally got ad block. When that gets fixed, I’ll disable it for srk.

Yo~

Has anyone played Catherine?

I just started playing yesterday, and it’s really fun. Really difficult (and I’m on Easy mode right now because I want to enjoy the story), but really fun.

IT IS EXTREMELY FUN!! The bee’s knees I must say!! MUCH LOVE. ALL OF THE LOVE!

The game has massive replay value. I really recommend you play it multiple times to get the full effect! I love how this game gives you a challenge! Especially when you play on hard mode! Believe me, that was a a battle, but oh so fulfilling! Now easy mode may look difficult, but when you know the tricks and begin replaying, you’ll smack yourself wondering why you took so long! Nephinel, if I was on the 360, I’d add you simply because you play Catherine! I’m sorry, but I love this! I feel this is a true video game.

Woah, down Wallace Wells.
I played Catherine too, (and don’t tell anyone but I totes got the special edition, because lol polka dot boxers) It was really well done, and it’s always fun to show people the game and go “It’s a puzzle game.”

Oh, and Neph, I think there are 8 endings totall, but you can get more than one per play through if you save in the right place. That’s something I wish I knew the first time I played through.

KOF13 free on Playstation Plus … why not Skullgirls?

You know with KOF13 going free on PS+ I’m starting to wonder how feasible it would be for Skullgirls to show up as a PS+ incentive as well. I can’t honestly think of a better way to reinvigorate the community by giving the people who were otherwise on the fence with the game a shot to try out Slightly Different Edition after it hits. It’d definitely be a welcome jolt to the community I think.

KOF certainly isn’t the first instance in which a fighting game has showed up on the service either, VF5FS was free during its launch month for Plus users as well. Obviously I’m ignorant to the logistics of this sort of thing happening but it seems to me that Skullgirls would just be a natural fit for the service.

How active is the Skullgirls community, on a competitive level? I’ve been looking for a new fighter to get into competitive play with, I don’t like MvC3, KOF13 is okay, I like SFxTK but don’t want to play doubles with someone, SCV is… well SCV, HDR is dead </3. Persona 4 looks to be pretty cool but I don’t have the $ at the moment. Is this game worth getting into?

Offline? That’s something you may want to research on your own. Unless you live in Socal (where a scene for any game seems like a given) you may have to poke around in the regional matchmaking boards to find whether or not there are people willing to play SG in your area.

Online? It fluctuates I think, there are times when I can find a match with 0 issue when I jump on and there are times where I’ll be waiting 20-30 minutes before matches. I believe (based purely on the PSN matchmaking thread) that the community for the game is mostly centered around the PS3 version of the game and you can find matches with those guys fairly easily. If you’re used to the UMvC3 / MvC2 style of jump online and immediately find a match at any time of the day then SG may come as a shock to you, a fair number of the community I think have chosen to just sit and wait until the super duper patch comes out.

Great game though. ^^;

If you have PSN, from what I’ve read you should be fine. XBL is a pain, but players are around if you’re willing to wait a long while.

If Skullgirls goes free for PSN+ at some point, it needs to be after the patch.

Goes without saying. Doing it pre-patch will be rrrealy unwise =[

How many people on the planet have a custom keyboard layout? I’m drifting into ubernerd status…

any of you crazy cats going to canada cup this year?

would be awesome to get some games of skullgirls in the casuals area.

For some reason I can’t open SRK with the Firefox anymore o_O Gives me a blank page… Opera works without any issues?.?
