First fighting game I played… SUPER TURBO.
…
ON MY PHONE HAHAHAHA
I only started playing fighters last august, first I played BBCS2, then AE, then I went back to CS2, then I went to local casual matches and Played melty blood since then.
So if you think you’re new, YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT!! Wait I mean… You know too much shit. Or something.
Ms. Fortune. The only thing better than a catgirl is a catgirl who can throw her own head at you. Although going by her artwork alone, Squigly looks like she’ll be an awesome DLC character.
Or if we’re talking DLC potential like a lot of other people are, these are who I want:
Sabine
Nanocyst
Aura
Leduc
Big Band
Venus
Annie
Tetris Attack IS NOT TETRIS. Nintendo bought a Japanese game and rebranded it to try to sell more copies…you know, like Mario 2…
Every New Year’s I speedrun Alundra. Someday I’ll get up the nerve to stream it. :^P
VP party, ignoring postgame characters - Lenneth w/bow, Kashell or Belenus, Jayle or Lucian while you can, Yumei. There may be better mages but she’s sooo cuuuuute…Kashell’s dive bomb sets up OTGs for both Lenneth (lots of bow hits) and Lucian (whose 2nd strike is just dumb) which pretty much maxes out your purple gems every battle…whereas Belenus has the best accent (^.^) and his finishing strike does really really really really good damage if you actually level him up instead of getting rid of him right away.
</nerd> Sleep time.
My games:
BlazBlue (Litchi/Platinum/Kokonoe some day)
Guilty Gear (I-No/Venom)
Fate/ Unlimited Codes (Caster/Rin)
Soul Calibur V (Viola/Tira/Xiba) and Soul Calibur I-IV (Seong Mi-Na)
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (Strider/Dr. Doom/Phoenix and Chun-Li/Sentinel/Doctor Doom)
Games I play, but have never really gotten good at:
Street Fighter (Rose/Viper)
King of Fighters 13 (Mai/Leona/Mature)
Arcana Heart 3 (Nazuna/Konoha/Dorothy)
Tekken (Anna/Julia)
Mortal Kombat 9 (Sindel/Kitana)
No love for Arngrim.
Actually, this right here is the reason Skullgirls is awesome to me. It’s because the people behind it are human [S]and oh god Mike Z’s VP team is sick as hell[/S], rather than some corporate suits who don’t know their own audience. That, and the game just looks cool.[S][/S]
I got my start with Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure on the Dreamcast, and the first time I saw Dio do the infamous “WRYYYYYYYYY”, I literally lost my pants. It was the craziest shit I have EVER SEEN! Since then I’ve moved onto Darkstalkers 2 and 3, as well as CVS2 and Guilty Gear. Traditionally, I am horrible at fighting games, but I still try to motivate myself that I can do better. My execution is horrible, but I still plow through.
THIS, is the reason why I love Skullgirls so much. It’s really the first fighting game to make me FEEL like I can do it. That somehow I can better myself, and it’s obvious that it tries to take you along for the ride, without compromising any depth or any degree of skill. It seems like a game that is easy enough to get into, but to master the characters, and systems is going to take a LONG while. The skill cap seems to be crazy high and I really like that! It gives me some motivation to go onward to really prove I can feel better. Another thing I like is that it has features that should be the standard for fighting games, like Hitbox display, GGPO and other little things that add up over time. This really is the fighting game for fighting gamers. It’s the first of it’s kind, and I CAN’T WAIT!
Sorry for all that Chibi. I’m just too hyped for this game right now!
“The dust looked to be kicked up by a group of Artolian Cavalry…” Yeah, I like Arngrim, but everybody likes Arngrim.
Hmm well I started with Soul Calibur II (did rest of series), picked up mvc2 casually, played mvc3 alot, now i’m playing SCV until I force myself to break away for Skullgirls…
This made me lol.
I wasn’t too interested in fighting games at first because the only fighting game I knew was out at the time was street fighter 2 turbo and I didn’t really like that game. I played Smash Bros 64 and had lots of fun doing whatever in it, but it was in Melee that I started to take the game seriously and wanted to be competitive in it. After Brawl was released I gave it a try for a while but ultimately it was just a terrible game for competitive play.
I tried Blazblue CT at a Melee/Brawl tournament one time because someone brought a setup for it and I had known about it but wasn’t really all that hype for it. When I played it I fell in love with Nu and the game in general as it fixed a lot of the problems that I had with Melee.
I’ve been playing BB ever since.
The reason why I enjoyed Melee and BB so much is because of the freedom of mobility and how combos felt more like a creative experience rather than just typing out a ground link.
I’m looking to make SkullGirls as my Primary fighting game, so I don’t know how much Blazblue I’ll be doing.
Main games:
SkullGirls
BBCSEX
Games I’ll play for fun
AH3
3SOE
MvC2
GGAC
And I’m also looking into Melty Blood, but I haven’t really played it much.
I started with Street Fighter II cause my dad loved the living heck out of it, so me and my brother tried it out and loved it. Years passed we didn’t have money but then one day if it counts we got into SSB64. lol I was more of a casual player until my friend SuzuKnow/DoYouknow taught me about Blazblue and what not so I got a bit serious on that. Since then, been importing and getting every BB/Fighting game there is. Not much history but eh.
But, I was attracted to skull girls thanks to Alex’s Deviantart/Livejournal/Pub.tenkuu
From this trailer - http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/02/03/dev-diary-skullgirls-is-a-feature-rich-psn-fighter/
I got this screen grab:

If this has already been found, sorry. There’s a lot of random concept art in there too, including more of Double.
It took me a minute to get that. But then I lol’d. FOOTBALL
As for the above above… Yeah I think most of us have seen that by this point. I think the forum kind of exploded with screencaps at about that time.
I know that there was a full set of all the quickly flashing images put up on tumblr as well.
Still, it’s an interesting thing and I’m curious about Double now coz of that poster :> It’s funny how even a little information could do that.
Who wants me to stream my very first play of Alundra?
I guess I’ll post my story as well.
I’ve been playing fighting games my whole life, not competitively, but they were pretty much the only genre of games I ever played growing up. (Except for Monster Rancher, God I miss that game)
The first game I ever played was Mortal Kombat 3 I believe, I was probably about 3 or 4 (The game had already been out for almost 6 years by then) at the time, and I played it everyday with my dad before I would go to sleep. I ALWAYS picked Sindel according to him, and it’s funny, because I still use her, even today. And of course, being so young there is no way I could figure what the heck I was doing, but that was the beginning of it all. Once I got to be about 5 I wanted to get other fighting games, so they got me Soul Calibur, Tekken, King of Fighters, Street Fighter, Capcom vs. SNK, Smash Brothers, almost all of the fighting games that came out, I had, and I played them all the way up until my teenage years. Everyday I would play these games, and I would slowly figure out how a fighting game worked, but I was never competitive, and I could only play by myself, so I didn’t know much.
When I was 11 or 12, I can’t quite remember right now, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger came out, and my brother-in-law bought it to play with his friends, and I fell in love with Litchi as soon as I saw her on the character select screen, and I played it non-stop for weeks, but I was never good. However, one day I ran into a guy named Gran-Turismo-Man (Otherwise known as Bolverk-GTM) and I picked Noel, who he mained, we fought and he destroyed me, but I did something in the match that he had never seen before (Which was backthrow > Air Super) and he thought it was really awesome, so he added me.
We continued to fight for a few days, and I stuck with Litchi after that. We had mics on, so we talked a lot. I told him I really wanted to play Arakune, but I couldn’t figure out how he worked. He told me he knew a really good Arakune player who could teach me some basic stuff. Then one day he was in a room with said Arakune player and decided to invite me in so I could talk with him, ask him some questions about Arakune and maybe add him to my friends list.
So I get in the room and it’s full when I join, there was Hitoshura89 (The Arakune player), Hellknight_10 (A fantastic Nu, Lambda now), ForTheBunnies (A Rachel player), a guy named Kenji with a bunch of numbers I don’t remember (He used lots of characters), Gran-Turismo-Man and then me. Since I didn’t know any of them, except for GTM, I didn’t put my mic on like everyone else because I was a bit nervous. So I just played like normal for a bit and then decided to throw on my mic. When I did everyone kind of flipped out because I sounded so “little” and “Asian” according to them, and the struck up the conversation on how old I was. That really interested them because they had never seen someone so young be able to play a fighting game well, not competitive, but good enough not to get murdered.
I did know what a combo was, how to tech throws, what oki was, how to pressure, what the Guard Libra system was, how to fight against zoning, what anti-airs were, how to keep myself from getting hit by air unblockable attacks by using the Barrier Guard, what an Instant Block was, I knew NOTHING aside from how to poke with single attacks and chain a few moves together. I also couldn’t preform special moves without using the Easy Specials control, which they had disabled, so I was only using normals. When they picked up on this they asked me why I wasn’t using those specials and I told them that I needed the shortcut to use them. They all kind of chuckled a bit and told me that I needed to learn how to do them normally, or else I would never get better. So I did, I practiced and practiced and practiced all night long on doing the specials, and by the end of the night I could do them fairly well.
Throughout the night I started getting really open towards them, we talked about all kinds of stuff and I ended up adding them all to my friends list. So that was the beginning of my first competitive fighting game experience. Even if it was online, the netcode was fantastic, and they were all really good.
We continued to play almost everyday, and Hitoshura began teaching me Arakune, I didn’t end up playing him, but thanks to him I found out what all of the system mechanics were, and how fighting games generally worked, so he really introduced me into competitive fighting, and I always thank him for that. Once I picked up the gist of it, I went to Hellknight_10 for critiquing and to see if he had anything he could teach me. He ended up showing me most of the advanced tactics like Oki, Instant Blocking, using DPs during pressure, what mixups were and the like.
Those two were the ones who got me where I am today, and it’s always fun to go back and look at all those times trying to learn fighting games, and meeting those guys.
Now all of us talk everyday on BB, Skype, PSN chats, AIM and through multiple forums. We’ve all known each other for almost 4 years I think, and we’ve got a lot of other people who hang out with us now. They’re practically my best friends, and they’re also my core fighting game scene.
After finally learning how to play fighting games at a competitive level, I’ve entered a few tournaments, won them all and have picked up multiple other games and have begun to get fairly good at them. My goal is to reach the level of the pros and take home a major, or at least get top 6 at one.
So that’s basically the gist of my fighting game history, I could go into detail about learning different stuff, or my experiences with other games like Marvel, SF, GG, SC or TK and how those taught me a lot of things, but I don’t think anyone really cares about that, or heck, even most of the stuff I wrote above. He he.
EDIT:
I totally forgot to mention how I got into SG.
I first heard about it from a thread on Dustloop, the day it was announced. I actually didn’t think it looked very interesting, this was in the Filia only build, when there were three different versions of her, and one of her supers was just a giant version of hairball. But I still kept up with it, because I was interested in seeing what Mike Z could do, and I loved the character designs.
Eventually it began shaping up really, really well and I started to be really interested in it. And then slowly, but surely I began to love the game. Now I can’t wait for it to release and it’s probably going to be one of the greatest games every made, IMO.
During all that time of hype and such though, I did a few sprite edits of Filia and Squigly and made a few palettes for them both. When I posted them on Dustloop Alex Ahad saw them, as well as a few of the other guys from the art team. They liked them and thought I had potential, so Mike Z. sends me a message, asking me if I want to volunteer for them making palettes, without a second thought, I said yes, signed my NDA and began to work.
After getting to play it for hours (A really old build, might I add though) I can easily say that this game is fantastic, and I was using a keyboard, had no sound, and the build didn’t even have Parasoul’s specials implemented, and yet I’d still buy it like that.
So needless to say, I love SG, and I love the Reverge team. Skullgirls is going to be fantastic, and I hope to play it at a major one day.
Got my start in Smash, used to be a HUGE fan of Melee and playing competelivey, hell still am. Then I started breaking into KoF and other SNK games before I got into 3S , CVS2, andMVC2 more than almost any other game, especially CVS2 I fucking love that game and would play it over any other game right now. I suck ass at both but I’m still trying to get into them. Currently though I’m mainly playing UMvC3, Vampire Savior, KoF XIII, BB, and MBAACC. I love the genre in general and I’m always down to play just about anything from Breakers Revenge Tia and Condor are <3 to Garou MOW. GGPO is the bestest thing to ever exist.
I first got my real interest in fighting games way back in the day when I was 8 and I went to Silver Coin arcade, I owned a Genesis back in the day and for the most aprt all me and my brohter would play is SF2 CE. To me a hype combo was j. RH Cr. RH with Ryu so seeing people play ST and do things like simple 2n1 like Cr. MK into Hadouken or Juggling people with Bison J. MP blew my mind and I would usually go straight from school and hop on the bus to the arcade so I could watch and learn more to one day get better and beat some of those guys.
To my side, my noble Einherjar! Nibelung Valesti!
I like all those games Mike likes a lot, except Alundra. Tetris Attack is amazing… without the Yoshi art. Maybe we need Panel De Pon Whiteboard Art.
…And I even like Alundra that despite hating the game, because I bought it from a dude on IRC that ended up becoming my best friend after we bonded over how much we didn’t like it.
