I guess my final thing is this: I don’t think that this discussion is an important or relevant issue to this game. So it’s really just beating a dead horse, and derails the the thread. :\ Kinda agree with Jet Set Dizzy. Or at least find somewhere to discuss it that isn’t the general discussion thread… Hell, even just shoving it in its own thread would be better than nothing.

Worst case scenario, this game and every other game in the genre is sexist. You are still sabotaging a small indie game with nothing but the community in mind when they are no more guilty of anything than Capcom/SNK/Namco.

My point was in media everyone is sexualized, women complain about it, men dont fucking care. Everyone is put on screen, games, or whatever form of media for a purpose, to hit a certain demographic. More attractive lead roles get more people to be interested in media, thats how it works, ugly men are not casted for leading movie roles unless its a plot device. I always hear women say that its unrealistic to have the comercials and tv be filled with these 38 double d chested women who are stick thin elsewhere, well its also the same boat with men, its unrealistic for every guy to be a hulking behemoth with an 8 pack. In my mind this tells men the exact same thing as it does women( which I do agree with you on but I feel like its the same thing for men ). The biggest thing I was trying to get across was that men are just as sexually portrayed in media as women. If it came across as me being a prick its only because I have argued this shit to the ground with way too many people and I feel very strongly that men are in the same boat, just less vocal about it.
I’m not going to argue vehemently about the “privilege” of men on a fighting game website for two reasons.
- even though there is nothing I enjoy more then a stimulating debate, this idea goes off into thousands of potential tangents that I could argue back and forth with probably until skull girls comes out. I normally would do this, but I’d rather just say my piece and be done with it.
- I am not a female, I dont know how it feels for females, what they experience etc etc… but I have my view point from what I see of female portrayal in media.
I dont really know what you mean by male privilege to be quite honest. I’m assuming this is one of those known generalizations that gets thrown around alot without much explanation.
Men are always sexualized in games the ones that aren’t are meant to be joke characters or something along those lines, even in sf all of the characters are appealing to the female eye ( even zangeif if your into that giant hairy chested russian thing ) but rufus who breaks the mold, who is a joke character who is intended to be a parody of american life style choices. The same thing almost to a T in tekken, all muscle bound stoic bad asses and then that fat american ( once again only non perfect male character in the game ).
I’m pretty sure the idea behind cerebella was similar to everyone else in the game, how do we make these characters look cool as fuck, a girl with a giant set of arms on her head is much more appealing then a girl with giant arms, I look at it more so as design being dictated by things that they wanted to do in the game.
You can tell by watching her animations that its more so about having something that looks insane and cool then anything else. Maybe I’m wrong maybe they did sit down and say a women cant be strong without giant hat arms on her head. I would think it would be kind of weird to see either A. a giant female character throwing people around or B. a small female character without the means to actually do so chucking people around, then again maybe I’m a sexist asshole.
I’m was in no way trying to say don’t point out flaws you see with the game. I was just trying to provide a rebuttal to something posted earlier that seemed asinine to me. I would greatly prefer open debate and conversation to close mindedness.
Maybe feminist junk wasn’t the best way to lend credibility to my post for an opening statement.

OK, I’m just gonna write a little about this.
If someone doesn’t like the art or thinks the games sexist, I obviously disagree with them. However, I’ll just clarify with them that they know that the gameplay is flawless. I guarantee none of these people know enough about the game to find something gameplay related to complain about.
As long as they admit the gameplay is extremely good, I leave them be, because really the art style isn’t for everyone. If someone is uncomfortable playing a game with revealing clothing, we can’t rewire their brain.
This is the last I will say on this topic.
If they dont like the art make them play dead or alive for a day.

I was told recently by a woman that SF3 Makoto as a design was just as sexually-driven/male-gaze-born as Mai from KOF, because “the notion that a girl has to give up her sexuality to be considered ‘strong’, or to fight on the same level as men is sexist”.
IMHO as long as you see women in fighting games they will generate sexism arguments regardless of what they look like. And even if you didn’t have women their absence would, of course, be considered sexist. The argument is as empty and bankrupt as hell, and there are no winners for it, ever. Just people who lose more than others.
