That would be terrible for me… -_-
Totally agree with everything in your post (because duh), except that I’d reframe this question that you posed. I don’t think there’s any reason to suggest that a character’s complexity can be made irrelevant by their other, more problematic aspects. Like there are rappers who clearly use the objectification of women in order to pander to male audiences or whatever, but that doesn’t actually diminish their other qualities. It just sort of “gets in the way.” So I think a better way to phrase it would be “does this pandering ‘outshine’ the complexities of the characters?” Or something like that. In other words, yeah Cerebella might end up being a legitimately interesting character or whatever, but to what extent is she also a sex object, and does she as a character ultimately represent that more saliently than she does her other, more valuable characteristics?
Anyway, yep. You’re in a thread full of gamers, specifically fighting gamers (and ones with anime sympathies at that). I wish I could say that this argument had the legs to sustain itself in this environment, but I mean, hahahahaha, your post had zero likes before mine, and Jarekov’s insanely ignorant and terrible response promptly got like, six. It’s an interesting discussion and in my opinion is like ten times more valuable than just random memes or whatever, but yeah, this won’t end any better than it has in the past sadly.
Whenever someone is complaining about women or anything women related on the internet, it’s probably a man unless on facebook. Rule of thumb.
I believe the term you’re looking for is “catch-22”. No matter how you try to respond, they can still “prove” you wrong.
That’s all I wanted to add. Other than that I don’t give a fuck anymore.
I forgot insanely ignorant constitutes not seeing things from someone else’s perspective.
you know what your right, everything that happens in the media is a way to keep women self conscience about themselves and prolong “male privilege” .
Sometimes I wonder if anyone even realizes that at times feminists sound like the more bat shit crazy conspiracy theorists, just to be really honest here.
I’m not going to explain all the reasons that your post was super terrible in this thread, because nobody in this thread wants to hear this “feminist shit” in the first place (except like me). If you really want me to break it down you can PM me or something, I don’t care.
I’m only here for the new video, to be perfectly honest.
Yeah, that sums it up nicely.
I made a simple argument, both sex’s are generalized in media, dont see how that could be terrible.
I got likes because I said ricky gervais is fucking handsome.
Anyone seeing all the hate dhim’s vid is getting on the front page. It’s funny because everyone is referring to dhim as a guy lol.
By even discussing it (continually, repeatedly, without end), you give credence to the idea that Skullgirls is sexist. You are making no headway in helping the movement, and are continuing a discussion that has the only result of damaging Skullgirls’ reputation and how its viewed by the unwashed ignorant masses. I don’t give a damn about your feelings or politics, but you are actively engaging in damaging something I have high hopes for. You are feeding the trolls, or being the troll. We’ll find out which here shortly.
I appreciate your response and I think I see where you are coming from. However, I don’t agree that people won’t buy a game just because it has “ugly” female characters.
First of all I don’t think women with muscles and of different body types are ugly, and there are many ways to create interesting and not-hard-on-the-eyes (I say this instead of ‘attractive’ because that word is very subjective, and “easy on the eyes” is a little more universal) female characters that don’t fall into standard hourglass/child body types.
Secondly, there are already games out that sell extremely well that have female characters that aren’t overtly sexual.
I think the idea of “sex sells” is very outdated, and I’m pretty sure studies have shown that in fact it doesn’t really hold much water anyway.
Alex Ahad’s art is great, I understand it’s his style to draw his girls the way he does and he does what he wants. I can defiantly respect that. But I don’t think for a second that if it was Alex’s prerogative to draw some of his female characters with a closer to reality of female body type variations the game would sell less because people thought the girls where “ugly”.
I don’t think the male audience would be offended so much as to not by the game if Alex announced a character that was “fat” in the sense that they have a larger core typical of heavy weight lifters and wrestlers.
Man fuck all this sexism talk again.
Some of you owe me a nurse in boy shorts.
:3
No
Edit: I have to readjust some values (most) and I’ve been lazy.
Hey thanks JakeWasHere for bringing this subject back into the topic. Great idea!
If some people are disappointed for this reason, I think that is a little funny considering the history of American-made fighting games (Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, etc.)
Certainly agreed. However, the examples I’m sure JWH was referring to would certainly fall under “trolling” rather than constructive criticism.
That’s a bit too reductionist IMO. Cammy isn’t built like Chun-Li who isn’t build like Sakura who isn’t built like C. Viper who isn’t built like Makoto who isn’t Rose, etc. They are all very attractive but they still have distinct body shapes/sizes. IMO the same is also true of the girls in KOF. Marvel and Soul Calibur tend to be a bit more homogenous but you still can’t really lump them together anymore than into an “attractive” build. The MK girls who aren’t that four-armed chick who’s name I’m blanking on are pretty damn homogenous though.
This statement I disagree. Again I feel you are being reductionist. Yes Cerebella has an attractive build as do most of the Skullgirls but there is no homogeneity across the cast. Cerebella is built very differently from Ms. Fortune who is very different from Parasoul to say nothing of someone like Painwheel. This is something that always bothers me when people are trying to dismiss the game wholesale (as opposed to particular points) as some sexist/racy bullshit. Looking at both the included cast and the extended cast, this game takes more risks with female character design than any fighting game I can think off. What other female characters looks/moves like Peacock, Painwheel or Double? To say nothing of Ileum, Squigly, Venus, D. Violet, Myrine, etc. Now some of them are still decently attractive/cute, to make ALL of them plain ugly would just be unappealing or regulate them to joke status as with ugly males, but if you want diversity in female character design, this universe has it in spades.
The other reason I disagree with that statement is that it implies that Cerebella is nothing without Vice-Versa. When a solider goes to war or a knight goes of to battle, it is true that, technically, it is likely their gun/sword that will be doing most of the killing. However, one still needs strength, agility, intelligence, cunning, etc. to wield these weapons with any effect. Through her confidence and mannerisms, it is clear that Cerebella is calling the shots. Vice-Versa is nothing without Cerebella. As for muslce tone, I agree that females in games could generally use more but when you start delving into superpowers and magic and shit, which even Street Fighter does, muscle mass starts losing its importance in predicting power. That and despite the fact that no normal woman would ever be built like Zangief, I’m pretty sure such a design would be met with more disdain than praise by the general public.
Overall though, good post. And a good post by Gems too. I don’t usually go around liking posts but I think I’ll have to make an exception here.
Ok last post on this ( @toodles, if I’m really the first person in over 300 pages of SG discussion to be offtopic then so be it, but if people are concerned about sexism in skull girls then I dont see why not talk about it, especially before it comes out, I also dont see how any posts in a forum ever move shit forward in general discussion threads, ever. )
I dont think people will not buy a game unless they have attractive female characters in it, I think the people who push out products assume thats the case.
I think the artwork is done how all good artwork should be done, make something batshit crazy that has popular elements to it, that way you can do insane things without making it too weird for the mainstream.
I DREW THAT ALREADY FOR YOU. ;_;
I still have a whole bunch of keychains left over. I’m gonna open a little thread soon tho in the art schmection.
Hey, I’m working on it ok? ;-;

I’m gone for a day or so and this thread turns into feminist rants? Christ, I think it’s time to go back to lurking.
I go to sleep and then suddenly feminist.
