I kinda disagree/kinda agree. I feel like they did a pretty decent job with Cerebella herself, but they should’ve shown us the lighter side of the Medici mafia - just have done so to expand on her motivations and character, like you said. The way it is now, everyone in the game knows the Medici Mafia is a bunch of evil snots, so it feels weird when Cerebella defends them because we only see the big bad side of them. I feel like they should’ve tried to present Vitale as at least a half-decent father figure instead of the World’s Worst Dad - at least at first, only to reveal he’s an awful person in the ending.
What makes me upset is that even in Cere’s story, we don’t see the good side of the Medici.
Usually, in stories with multiple protagonists like this, they show one side of the conflict, then another.
But when it comes to the Medici, literally ALL we’ve seen of the Medici are heartless, amoral bastards, THAT INCLUDES Cere’s story, which just doesn’t make any sense.
Remember, this ain’t the True story mode folks, we ain’t gonna know everything about all the characters this soon. Out of all the characters through, Peacock was surprisingly the most fleshed out of them all, but not 100%.
This is almost a similar situation with Street Fighter Alpha and Alpha 2: The first game being just a introduction, and the second game actually introducing the main story for the characters, same said about SF 3:Second Impact…
There was that criminal woman shown in the beginning of Parasoul’s story who was half Gigan, so… it could be plausible.
Also, about Filia: I swear it seems like everybody knows about Filia. Samson, Painwheel, Cerebella, Marie… Even Peacock is privy, if her win quote is anything to go by. I’m guessing this is why she’s kind of the de facto main character: she may end up being the thing that ties everyone’s stories together.
And about the mob: What I’m getting out of the portrayal of the Medicis so far is that they are run by people who are unscrupulous and very good at manipulating others. Good people are perfectly capable of doing bad deeds, and Bella’s story definitely shows it. She might have pure love… but she’s willing to do terrible things because of it. Vitale knows this and that’s how he keeps her in his corner. And it seems like she only realized this when she had already crossed the moral event horizon. Blinded by love until she finally got it. Twisted ain’t it?
Random musings: What are the odds of Marie coming back post-defeat in story mode? Random bull shit revivals for dead antagonists is not uncommon for FG villains. I can see someone like Brain Drain taking the remaining scraps and using them to construct something similar to Peacock/Painwheel. Hell, this remodeled Marie could be the playable version we get.
I also want to learn more about Brain Drain. I can’t even tell if he’s supposed to be semi-human or not, as far as I know he is a complete mystery other than “the guy/thing that contracted Valentine to create Painwheel”.
Don’t forget Samson interjecting with “No you don’t.” afterwards. Definitely a big glimpse into Samson’s true nature.
So, does Samson fit the “overprotective father” persona or the “control-freak boyfriend” one? I can’t get a good grasp on him after finishing Filia’s “story”.
I personally think that Samson is protecting Filia.
I think Samson knows better than anyone else that going back with Cerebella (and in extension the Medicis) could be really, really bad for her.
I thought Samson just wanted a host who was to become the Skullgirl, which is why he always tries to avoid Filia getting her memories back so Filia would be forced to use it to get them back.
It could be a little bit of both? Maybe he merged with her initially because he had evil intentions or something, but warmed up to her and became protective?
It definitely seems like he’s hiding something from her, but whether that’s for her good or if he’s just being selfish or what, is a mystery.
Gooood, I want true story so bad… Why the hell everybody were so offended by the movelist’s exclusion!!! I think that exclusion of story is way more sad… =[
Yeah, I’m that casual - but then again, Mike made his dream engine, but it seems that Alex’s dream universe didn’t come to life yet. I don’t want to lose it before I’m able to taste it.
The reality is that blocks colliding with blocks is the core of a fighting game and everything else is just gravy. Gravy that can make a very boring experience very exciting but still just gravy.
Most of the time, story in fighting games are usually excuse plot.
I know. THAT’S why I’m really afraid that Ahad’s universe will go in the trash can because of this. In most fighting games deep stories aren’t present in the first place because of the aforementioned reasons but SG had this universe and convoluted plot long-long ago. I don’t want to see all this work dumped down because of recourse restrictions and lack of interest =[
So does anyone know what the Science Shark’s name is?
Story mode was always pretty much forgettable on Fighting Game anyways, so no one will get mad because the story sucks or is disappointing.
it is on par with most fighting games anyway.
And also, FG aren’t the best genre to have an excellent story mode anyway.
On Beat’N’Ups you have varied enemies and bosses which might require different strategies. On FGs you have a bunch of normal fighters and a cheap boss in the end.
Dr. Stanley Whitefin according to Mike Z
I dislike the FG excuse plot attitude coz like… Just because other fighting games are known for having shitty stories, doesn’t mean Skullgirls has to bow down and have a crappy story too. It’s just a medium, a means to telling a story. What should the genre of game the story is in have to do with how good it is? Is an RPG’s story any better than a platformer’s just because it’s an RPG? Is there some unwritten rule that FGs HAVE to have a crummy story?
Skullgirls defintely has a deep story behind it. Remember Skullgirls had already existed before Mike and Alex got together. I remember checking the old SG page that was linked from o_8’s DA page trying to figure out what it was because I loved that art style.
And if the story hasn’t been changed I know at least one thing Samson is hiding from Filia…
where can i find the old storylines? (from around 2006 i think?)
because if you’re talking about what i think you’re talking about . . .
