Skillful Rekkagnition (Fei Long Matchup Thread)

I played an extremely set up/gimmic style Hakan player tonight. Took me about 8 matches to get a handle on what was going on. For now the little snippets I took from the match were.

You need to cr-lk to avoid the flip grab on wake up.
He can safe jump us into an ambiguous J.HK and option select to hit the CW escape - very tricky to avoid.
Oiled up if he focus attacks our jump attack he can recover and react before we can
His Super can only be crouched
He has a block string (and on hit) involving light kicks that he buffers a EX grab for decent damage - neutral jump it to escape.
You can rekka when he oils up from almost a full screen if your reactions are good after a dash up.
He seems to suffer from the tic throw/tenshin game
Oiled up he’s extremely scary - he can knock you out of the air if you try and jump back and combo into KD.
MK CW seemed to be really good at blowing up his set ups
St.Fierce seemed to be working near the end of the set as a keep away. Could be useful in trade/wake up situations.

I might upload a video or two. Safe to say I was pretty stumped for the set (I still won but I’d be lying if I wasn’t guessing half the time!)

What is the best way to handle Blanka? Pretty much everyone I have palyed online gives me problems. If I block his cannon ball, he bounces off far enough to be safe, and his recovery on everything seems to be faster than Fei’s.

Believe it or not, Blanka is very unsafe on a majority of his tools. As a matter of fact Fei Long is one his worst matchups by far simply because he can punish so many things at ease. A blocked blanka ball can get Rekka’d (practice timing in training mode since you can hit him too early and not get max damage {catches them in the air}). Online is what makes it seem like he’s so safe, but really it’s just the input lag that you’ll suffer from online conditions. Dont take it too serious. Use Ultra 2 in this matchup, if he goes for Ultra 1 setups, you can just Ultra 2 for free when you see him start to fall down. (same goes for EX-Rainbow ball) If you dont have Ultra 2 meter, just Focus his EX-Rainbow but ONLY if he doesn’t perfrom it on reversal. If you’re predicting a rainbow ball on his wakeup (and he doesnt have ultra), You can beat that option on his wakeup by using the OS (Cr. LK, Cl. St. LK OS~ Cl. HP. In the corner his upball can get punished even on hit. Hope that helped

Fei is actually one of Blanka’s worst matches. I might do a write up.

With no meter Blanka has very few options and he’s not hard to get in the corner. As a general rule get a sizeable life lead on a meterless Blanka then defend and bait the meter out of him. If you make Blanka come to you you can slap him sill, especially in the corner - he can do nothing.

WIth the Blanka ball on block you can mp rekka (second and third hits) or dash up lp rekka (I’ll double check that but I think that’s right)

All I know is that Fei can punish Gen hands on block with Rekka. That alone made me hate the Fei matchup.<br><div><br></div>

<div>I can help with Dee Jay:</div><div><br></div><div><b>Mindset/Approach:</b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div>From the get go you should pay attention to what Ultra Dee Jay is using. U1 means he’s going to want to stock meter for his Super -> Ultra, which means he should be doing a lot of walking back and throwing a lot of AS.  U2 means he’s going to be more lenient with his meter, as MGU dash Ultra only needs one bar (if he can land dash ultra but thats a different story). That being said, you’re still going to walk him down to the corner regardless of ultra choice.  Since Dee Jay can control the space in front of himself so well, jumping should only be reserved for when you know he doesn’t have charge and j.mp will land right on his head.  Dee Jay also has 2 HKD normals (cr. mk and cr HK) and he’s going to be looking to nail you with either while you’re walking forward so he can start his vortex.  The key here is to take the chip from the AS while pushing him back.  The Dee Jay in the corner is very helpless so be patient and always always always AA his knee shot (j. Down LK) as this will deter the player from even considering using it (you can even trade with it, which gives a free CW).</div><div><br></div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>Punishes:</b></div><div><b>Fei’s cr. lp xx Rekka is Dee Jay’s bane of existence!</b><br></div><div><br></div><div><b>Cr. HK</b>, if its not spaced or its poorly timed (doesn’t use it close enough) a cr.lp xx Rekka is good enough</div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>Cr. MK</b>, is -5 but usually you only get hit with the tip of his foot. cr.lp xx rekka if too close<br></div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>Far HK</b>, ive seen Dee Jays use this to try and preemptively stuff Rekkas, you can either whiff punish or LP Rekka</div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>Sobats,</b> all are unsafe, cr. lp xx rekka or cl HP xx Rekka (if deep enough) for corner carry</div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>JM (upkicks)</b>: you have to be quick or else Dee Jay will recover, you can dash in and Cl. HP to whatever you want, EX JM stays in place but don’t sleep on the punish                        because you want to hit him as he lands (like punishing a Shoto DP)</div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>Knee Shot: </b>A great tool that you should FK on reaction (no real way around it), however cl.MK works and comes out a frame faster than FK (4f instead of 5f FK) but has                   no invincibility frames so its your call.  If you’re uneasy with reaction FK, cr. MK will make it whiff but its better to make the Dee Jay player see that you’re                     going to FK his knee shot on reaction.</div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>AS:</b> This is a good fireball and he does recover faster than Shotos, EX CW this can be hard as you have to do it either before they throw it or as they begin to                        throw it (which they will probably block), but you’re 0 after it so its a guessing game (in your favor). Super on reaction will work but Ultra is either too slow or the              second hit wont connect most of the time :(</div><div><br></div><div><b>Wakeup:</b> On wakeup Dee Jay is free to cr.lk meaty…this seriously beat EVERY option he has outside of ultra</div><div><br></div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>Best Moves: Dee Jay</b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>J.Down LK</b> He can keep charge with this and it sets up safe jumps galore as he can change his jump arc</div><div><br></div><div><b>J HP </b>If Dee Jay has an AS out and is walking towards you, DONT JUMP UP OR AT HIM! J. HP is a really good AA for covering the space as he’s jumping…seriously            just block the AS.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Cr.MK/HK</b> A double TKD is amazing, especially if he goes for a trade cr.mk (hint you lose that one). The Cr. HK has deceptive range (watch his bottom foot!) and is also                 a great AA when used early enough, he can even combo into U2 if you juggled so be careful! Expect the cr MK and cr HK a lot!</div><div><br></div><div><b>Far MP</b> Shallow jump ins will almost always lose to this, don’t jump unless you’re confident you’re going to land ABOVE his head, not in front of him</div><div><br></div><div><b>Far MK:</b> Two hits and it moves him forwards slightly, can stuff Rekkas and he can cancel into sobats/AS off first hit.  A Dee Jay in the corner will most likely spam this              along with cr.MK, as a form of “get off me”.</div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>JM (Upkicks): </b>His best AA (when he has charge), and EX JM does a ton of damage especially on counter hit, so treat his JM like Guiles FK. Safe jumps will beat these                       cuz everything else will lose.</div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>U2 (Climax Beat): </b>Dee Jay is in the corner with Ultra, you have to respect that he has it (somewhat), as it will beat CW, Rekka, Tenshin, overhead, Cr.LK, FK, and tech.                             If you feel that Dee Jay is going to wakeup ultra just block.  It also does decent chip, and will catch a backdash if you timed it poorly so keep this in                               mind.</div><div><br></div><div><b>U1 (Sobat Festival):  </b>The dreaded Super to Ultra, not much to say other than be VERY mindful of how much life you have as one hit can net Dee Jay 500+ damage                                       or 200 chip! If you’re up a round, see if you can bait out the super/Ultra so that the final round he has no super.  Not a guarantee but hey, better                                     than nothing.</div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>Best Moves: Fei</b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>MK/EX CW</b>: I say MK over HK for two reasons: 1) MK starts up quicker and can take you clear over AS and give Dee Jay a tap, 2) You can throw it out on reaction to                      AS for a tap with the 3rd hit. Worst you get if he recovers in time is either a far MP or a jab.  That’s not to say don’t use HK, but usually the startup is too                        slow to catch a good Dee Jay throwing out an AS.  EX CW is good for all the reasons that makes it a great anti fireball move, but remember not to be very                      predictable with your CW approach, the worst thing to happen is you CW yourself into the corner, and Dee Jay starts walking back T_T It is also important                      to note that EX CW will usually get you out of the vortex, just block and  EX CW when you see an opening.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Cr. HP:  </b>Use this sparingly when you think he’s going to either sobat or slide, best used as a quick poke to throw them off “Wtf? he stuffed my slide?” and get some                    nice damage. This will lose to far MK so keep that in mind.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Cr.MK:</b> Can go under Far MK but only if spaced well, or else you’ll eat the MK.  GREAT move to trade with non TKD normals when you have super, as you can trade                 and still land full super!</div><div><br></div><div><b>FK:  </b>Your best AA tool and something you should have down to a science. AA his knee shot EVERY time, im not even kidding, EVERY time. Why? Cuz when a Dee             Jay get’s AA’d by this, he just ate a lot of damage for free.  Even better is if you trade, OS a forward dash U1, CW to ultra 1 (3 hits!), or even Super! Yeah, he gets        hit by any of those shenanigans and he’ll think twice about doing the knee shot.  YOU have to show him you can AA, if not he’ll just keep abusing it.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Rekka: </b>Your mainstay, whiff punish, and spaced rekkas only.  He can seriously just walk back and jab you out of them, so try not to be predictable with them, and for                 gosh sakes, ABUSE them! He blocks, thats cool he got chipped for free with no answer.  EX Rekka is good for punishing him when he thinks he’s going to slide             the LP/MP Rekka cuz you’re out of range for LP and MP will get swept.  EX Rekka time >=)</div><div><br></div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b>Corner</b>:  When you’ve got Dee Jay in the corner, you’ve almost won already.  Like I said earlier, Dee Jay loses to meaty cr. LK on wakeup…JM whiffs, Sobats will get                   blocked, AS gets stuffed (why would he do this?), and MGU gets stuffed…Ultra is really the only thing here.  Condition him to respect the cr. lk before you                     start going for stuff like Tenshin.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Tips:</b>  </div><div><br></div><div>-Always AA</div><div>-Walk and block him to the corner</div><div>-Patient play = better chances of him making a mistake</div><div>-OS his backdashes</div><div>-Cr.LK meaty on wakeup!</div><div><br></div><div>Hope this helps, I’ve had a lot of Dee Jay play</div><div>        </div>

I’d appreciate some inputs on Honda. He’s totally my nemesis.<br>

Fei beats Honda pretty bad IMO. There’s not much Honda can do on a turtle Fei and on KD we’ve got him covered. <div><br></div><div>Just AA with st.hk - usually much better than flame kick since he jumps high and slow.</div><div>Headbutts are reversal rekka and EX HB is reversal EX rekka </div><div>Flame kick OS beats like all of his WU - So throw - jump in OS Flame kick - pressure. </div><div>Cr.hp/st.hp and lp rekka if he tries to move forward. </div><div><br></div><div>Sounds basic but really there’s not much to do in the Honda match but to sit and wait for him making mistakes. Just keep him at bay with well spaced footsies and the st.HK for AA and wait for him to make a rash decision. Honda’s got to take all the risks. The only thing to be mindful of is his hands xx super so if your sitting far screen you might want to get closer to stop him whiffing command grabs to build meter. On top of that he might use that neutral jump fierce a fair bit so don’t abuse rekka too much in that situation, you can just walk forward or again use the s.HK to AA as he jumps up. <br><div><br></div><div>Really simple match IMO - in a sense that you just play it simple, nothing fancy going on. </div><div><br></div><div>Ultra choice would probably be U1 for a juggle or crumple or U2 if you can react to the butt slams but really the Ultra doesn’t play a part. </div><div><br></div></div>

Yeah I play like that except for the turtling part. That’s why I’m having trouble I guess. Anyway, I noticed some headbutts can’t be punished by rekkas, what gives ? Or am I just bad ?

Nah you’re not bad (per se haha :stuck_out_tongue: ) but you have to be standing in order to punish. Highland covered pretty much what you should know.  I might add that Cr.HP punishes Honda’s far RH if he whiffs it, making that the only range you want to stand at…literally, cuz porkchop (far HP) hurts from Honda and will beat out a lot of your buttons.  Just remember that Far HK from Honda hits low, so keep that in mind. <div><br></div><div><br></div>

<font color="#222222" face=“Helvetica, Arial”><span style=“line-height: 18px;”>I think you can actually reversal the RH if it hits anywhere inside the tip, it’s super slow. Also I think you can be crouching for the MP/HP HB’s and only the LP/EX are unpunishable. <p>Okay I did some testing :</p><p><br></p><p><strong>LP Headbutt </strong>: St MP Rekka, St.EX Rekka and St HP Super</p><p><strong>MP Headbutt</strong> : Anything except LP Rekka.</p><p><strong>HP Headbutt</strong> : Anything except Cr LP Rekka.</p><p><strong>EX Headbutt</strong> : St LP Rekka, EX Rekka and HP Super</p><p>And yeah you can reversal LP Rekka on block the RH if deep.</p>

<span style=“font-family: Arial, Verdana; line-height: normal;”>Yeah you can reversal punish his st.HK since it’s -7 on block. I think he’s safe from LP version if he hits with just the tip of the move. I usually go for the EX punish, without ceremonies. </span><font face=“Arial”>Don’t let yourself get scared into doing nothing when he gets close because that’s when he nets serious damage with Oicho throw (5f startup). There is absolutely no need to ever jump on a standing Sagat – That’s guessing. You must advance by focusing shots from far screen, using lp rekka from close range and also neutral jump. As above the odd EX Chicken Wing from in close is not a bad idea but anything mid-far you’ll eat a TU all day. It’s not hard to uppercut Chicken Wing as I do it all the time myself. Sagat has the second slowest walk speed in the game and our walk speed is decent</span><span style=“font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(31, 73, 125); border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;”> </span><span style=“font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;”>so mobility is a real problem for the king.<span style=“color: rgb(34, 34, 34);”> He will naturally walk himself back and you must let him. A good Sagat will rarely jump forward so you can somewhat concentrate on the ground game. He will however throw out the occasional neutral jump to catch rekka. Stay calm and use a combination of cr.hp, lp rekka and cr.lp xx rekka to close in ground and keep him in the corner. You will face a few what I would explain as “mexican stand offs” where you are both hovering around 0 on block after an exchange and Sagat will try to TK and we will try to rekka. Generally it’s not a bad idea to try and keep the pressure on though, like I said above TK hardly does any damage but the throw back is a good result for Sagat. It’s one of those things in the game where you just have to make a decision whether to stick or twist. </span></span></p><p class=“MsoNormal” style=“font-size: 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt; background-color: white; vertical-align: baseline;”><b><span style=“color: rgb(31, 73, 125); border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;”><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class=“MsoNormal” style=“font-size: 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt; background-color: white; vertical-align: baseline;”><b><span style=“font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;”>Corner game</span></b><span style=“font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(34, 34, 34);”><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=“MsoNormal” style=“font-size: 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt; background-color: white; vertical-align: baseline;”><span style=“font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;”>This is where the game will get played for the most part. I won’t go into depth here as Fei players should know how to run corner pressure. The st.hk will catch a Sagat player trying to jump back or neutral in the corner.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=“MsoNormal” style=“font-size: 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt; background-color: white; vertical-align: baseline;”><span style=“font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(31, 73, 125); border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;”><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=“MsoNormal” style=“font-size: 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt; background-color: white; vertical-align: baseline;”><b><span style=“font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 176, 80); border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;”>Corner set ups<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=“MsoNormal” style=“font-size: 10pt; line-height: 13.5pt; background-color: white; vertical-align: baseline;”><span style=“font-size: 10pt; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;”>1) After a rekka series you can forward dash, back dash and then take a step forward into j.mp and this will cross up. How do you guys usually get around fireballs? Seems like all shotos give me such difficulty just to put them in that corner.

I’m just patient really. Against good player there’s not much you can do from the air so I stay grounded and carefully progress though the fireballs. Once in range I poke them with Rekka and play footsies. When I built enough meter I play more aggressive thanks to EX Rekkukyaku. The goal is to keep them in the corner until they die and not rushing them recklessly. Overall I try to be solid

I try to play that same way, but the recovery on most shotos is too quick for me. IDK if its because of it being online, but I feel like most spam and get that chip dmg until I can get in.<div><br></div><div>I played a Sim last week where I literally couldn’t get in on him at all. Granted, he’s not a shoto, but chars like Sim, Guile, Bison, Vega and now apparently Rog (regardless of skill level) are giving me much problems.</div>

Stick some vids up Doc. It’s hard to give advice on a range of matches, more likely your play style is too aggressive and too impatient. </span></font></div>
