This thread will be dedicated to discussions about feminism in gaming, and why you think it’s a good thing, bad thing or somewhere in between and how you feel about it and how male and female characters are portrayed and designed. Women in the gaming industry etc. This is not to be confused with #Gamergate That thread will ( hopefully ) from here on be strictly about game journalism. Please keep all SJW/feminism discussions here.
Now me personally I think it’s one of the stupidest things for gaming to have to deal with since Jack Thompson’s crusade against videogames. I mean I’m all for more diverse characters and diffent types of female characters in gaming. But this pushy and condescending and judgmental way they go about it is just off putting. They see everything that’s bad to them, but make no effort to see the good. Perfect example being Sharkeesian’s tropes vs women video.
To be quite honesty with you, I’m not entirely sure either. So many proclaimed feminist offer so many definitions of the word I just don’t know anymore. I always figured it to be pro women rights or equality for women. My beef though is with the extremist here in gaming who seem to see everything that’s wrong with gaming in regards to women but see none of the good.
There are some base concepts that connect all feminist theory. Patriarchy theory is the very foundation of feminist thought. It is also the reason that all feminist theory is intellectually bankrupt. Every letter of it.
Took women’s studies in college and never heard the word patriarchy the entire semester. Matter of fact, I did a presentation on all the awesome female characters at the time, went to a debate about abortion and was the only dude in the class (out of 3) who would actively debate them.
To me, feminism should be about female empowerment and equality to men, and it should also mean that women and men should recognize each others’ differences as complimentary aspects of both genders. Women and men should not compete, but cooperate. Competition is just for games.
People that only see the bad only see half the story.
Well the guy who had the woman cry harassment on him would be defending himself from the white knight who came to her “aid”. So he wouldn’t really be an idiot.
Depends on where you’re asking. If people asked me about Structuralism or Marxist theory I can explain it. People ask me about how Feminism applies to my field of study I can explain it too. Its nowhere near what I would use for the base of anything since there are better tools for analysis. The number of female academics who don’t use it is a lot higher than what SJW lead you to believe.
You’ve studied it though (and actually I took a women’s studies class in college too.) But for most dudes, asking them about feminism is like asking a plumber how to do heart surgery.
But you’re right. Even a lot of old-school feminists disagree with a lot of what modern feminism proposes.
I didn’t study feminism per say, I just read some of the stuff that related to my field. It isn’t that it didn’t contribute anything but if you’re gonna go that way a straight Marxist analysis is better. I mean, really any conflict theory at that point probably does a better job of explaining things hollistcally than feminism.
Feminism and girl gaming were an inevitable pairing. But to understand why, you have to understand what feminism (as we know it today) is all about.
Let’s rap about gender (that is, male and female with corresponding genitalia). Like it or not, it’s a man’s world. Despite not having the majority, men have more power and influence than females.
But. Creation isn’t so unfair. Women are able to get their way by being lovely and appealing, often times. From time to time, it’s not even a deliberate thing. Have you ever been told not worry about paying the toll at the tollbooth, just because you’re pretty?
Now. What if you’re a female and you don’t have any beauty or appeal? Now you’re just a disadvantaged person in the world, surrounded by powerful men and beautiful women. What’s a girl to do?
EDIT: You know what? I’ll bite, fuck it. You can ask a black guy about Aryan nations but 9.5/10 you’re going to get a biased opinion. Why would you ask someone about a group they don’t like and that likely hates them if you wanted to know the facts about it?
Anyways you made a mistake right away by assuming the motives of the people involved. If anything asking a woman about feminism would lead to a more bias opinion given the movement is for their benefit. Also facts are genderless and anyone can have them…and given your previous comments on this subject it’s clear you have very little mate.
@Sennin@Docta Mario C’mon guys this about how feminism is impacting gaming. Not just feminism period. Lets talk about how is it good and or bad for gaming or specific aspects like good examples of female protagonist and how gaming isn’t all about smut, fan service and one dimensional damnsels like “You know who” would lead the casual gamer to believe.
