Sirlin.net: "The Anti-Progress Attitude"

Sirlin blew a load all over one of the greatest fighting games ever made and contributed to why there was no SF2 at EVO in what should have been a celebration of the game’s 20th anniversary.

Fuck you Sirlin.

Thing is, it wasn’t even an exaggeration. That was the number of Chuns and Yuns in Top 8 each year. Actually, there were more if you consider the counter-picks.

Kuroda wins with Q. I don’t care if you say he is an anomaly. He is fucking amazing so he can win with a terrible character. That means that if you are good enough you can win with anyone.

PS I hate balance patches for every game that doesn’t only fix game breaking glitches.

I echo this sentiment.

i know and of course everyone forgot how the day after quarters there was on outcry of who is the Makoto(Mike) that got Top 8? it was unheard of at the time. The arguement immediatly went to how he couldnt have made it in a double elim format. Wasn’t the Necro Sugiyama? A known hermit/Lifer in 3s between 2002-2008? Of course a guy like that can get top 8 in single elim against american comp that consisted of Chun’s/Pyro/and Ken’s.

His most win percentage character in Hugo.

He’s not using false information.

Not really. That was a tangential point. Are you nitpicking?

I don’t know, all signs point to it being horribly unbalanced. Do you want to give me evidence to the contrary? One dude killing folks with Q is not good evidence.

I’m not going to defend everything that Sirlin said in the article. I just think he makes some interesting and valid points that could spawn some good discussion if everyone on SRK wasn’t born with half a chromosome.

He got 3rd at SBO 2005, with Q, alongside Hayao (Hugo). He got 3rd or 4th (I think it was 3rd) at SBO 2009, alongside MOV (Chun), and an absent Ino (Makoto). So he got at least Top 4 with Q AND with a 2-man team.

Hey…watch your tone, boy.

No he’s not wrong. He listed the number of Yuns and Chuns in top 8. Goddammit. Also, give me good evidence that the game isn’t horribly unbalanced. I’d really prefer to not make this thread about how unbalanced 3S is, because it’s common fucking knowledge, and that’s not the christing point of the article in the first place, but ok.

some people have their head so far up sirlin’s ass that it’s probably time for them to pull it out of there and get a breath of fresh air.

oh do you? that’s nice to know.

?

It would spawn better discussion if it was a better article…

I’ve read quite a few of his articles, and I would say I liked them alot… gave me something walk away with and think about… only thing I’m left thinking when I walk away from article is “What the fuck were you thinking while writing this?”

If this article was just more focused, there would definitely be more worthy talking points… but as it stands at the moment, it’s just a poorly written article…

Also don’t play this…

Yes Chun and Yun are really fucking good, they skew the balance of the game.

But are you seriously going to try and tell a fanbase that they actually aren’t having fun playing a game they love? You can make all the “logical” arguments you want about the flaws of the game, but at the end of the day you have a lot of people who love it for what it is.

Please, PLEASE TELL ME THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS, PLEASE

Indeed. Also good to know: you’re offended by shit that really shouldn’t offend anyone.

what bullshit. you started this thread for other obvious reasons. since when has a sirlin article about 3s spawned good discussion? you’re just trying to start a flame war with this shit. stop idolizing everything sirlin.

There is classic mode and dipswitches bro

There is no doubt Chun-Li is a strong character in 3S, but then you play SF4, and the SF4 fan base have a bunch of players who don’t understand what it feels like to actually put in work to beat a character like Chun-Li (sorry Hakan players!). Twittering Ono death threats because of Yun? How many good Yun’s are in the US, one? I’m talking about Hsien. Then you have Vipers at EVO blowing Yun’s up because she’s just as random, and just as bad, and that’s worse than playing footsies with Chun-Li in 3rd Strike. SF4 players will never know how it feels like to put in work with your character, and actually win a tournament because you won’t put in the time, and you rather go on Twitter, waste your time, and win the easy way. Have fun with AE 2012, I’m sure it will grant you fulfillment, and accomplishment.

I’d like to thank RX, Sugi, Kuroda, Kokujin, Fujiwara, Thanos, Dirty, Pierrot, KO, Hayao, YSB, Yuki, Genki, Yarou, Ino, Blue, Ruu, Kazuya, TM, OUT, Vanao, etc… And KSK of course for making 3S so great.

GGPO!

I’m not playing devil’s advocate. I think the main thrust of the article, that a segment of the fighting game community which ardently rejects developers fixing problems in their games (cough Keits cough) is wrong-headed and foolish, is a debate worth having. How much developer interference is appropriate? Does the age of a game make a difference? Good questions, imo.

No?
